Asdrubal Cabrera heating up

(9:02 pm ET) Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera extended his hitting streak to five games Saturday, with a three-hit effort in a 7-4 loss to the Red Sox.

Cabrera went 3 for 5 in the game with an RBI double in the third inning. He scored one run in the game, while swiping two bases. He is now hitting .263 on the season, but has been on a role recently. Cabrera is batting .366 over the last 10 games, with five multi-hit efforts.   


Fernando Rodney crumbles again in the ninth

(8:59 pm ET) Rays closer Fernando Rodney continued to struggle as he blew his league-leading fifth save of the season Saturday against the Yankees.

Rodney, who entered the game in the ninth with a two-run lead, surrendered a two-out, run-scoring double to Brennan Boesch and a run-scoring single to Brett Gardner to tie the game. He was charged with two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out one in one inning of work.

Rodney has allowed seven runs over his last 4 2/3 innings of work. He has converted two of his last five save opportunities over that span.

Jeurys Familia throws perfect inning in first rehab appearance

(8:58 pm ET) Mets pitcher Jeurys Familia threw a perfect eighth inning for Class A St. Lucie in his first rehab appearance, striking out one batter. He hadn't pitched since May 9 due to biceps tendinitis.

Familia has a 3.48 ERA and seven strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings with the Mets this season.


Emilio Bonifacio hits rare homer

(8:57 pm ET) Light-hitting Blue Jays infielder Emilio Bonifacio provided a rare glimpse of pop Saturday against the Red Sox, as he hit his first home run of the season.

Bonifacio went 1 for 4 with the solo shot, his first since July 23, last season. Despite the unexpected source of power, the Blue Jays ultimately lost the game, 6-5.

Bonifacio is batting just .212 on the season, though he does have a surprising 11 extra-base hits in 118 at-bats. 


Danny Valencia providing pop

(8:55 pm ET) Orioles infielder Danny Valencia continued to hit well Saturday, homering for the second game in a row against the Blue Jays.

Valencia had a two-run shot off starter R.A. Dickey in the third inning of a 6-5 loss. He finished 1 for 3 with a walk, two RBI and a run scored.

Valencia is hitting .313 with at least a hit in his first four games. He has driven in four runs and scored three, with four extra-base hits. 


Jerry Hairston could return Sunday

(8:52 pm ET) Dodgers infielder Jerry Hairston could return to the lineup Sunday if everything goes well with Saturday's rehab game, MLB.com reports.

"We'll get Jerry back fairly soon here," manager Don Mattingly told MLB.com Saturday afternoon. "He'll play another day and then we'll make a decision. He says he's ready and medical is basically saying one more day."

Hairston is recovering from a groin strain and tendinitis in his left knee.


Matt Moore stays solid in no-decision

(8:52 pm ET) Rays starter Matt Moore turned in another solid performance but had to settle for a no-decision Saturday against the Yankees.

Moore allowed just a run-scoring single to Travis Hafner in the first inning. The left-hander permitted five hits and two walks while striking out two over six innings of the 4-3 extra-inning loss.

Moore has allowed two runs over his last two starts (13 innings) and is scheduled to next start Thursday at Miami.

Carlos Gomez homers twice

(8:51 pm ET) Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez homered twice Saturday in a loss to the Pirates, the first time he has hit multiple home runs in his career.

Gomez's home runs were solo shots in the seventh and ninth innings of a 5-2 loss. He went 2 for 3 with two RBI and two runs scored and a walk.

Gomez is hitting .331 to rank fifth in the National League, while also ranking in the top 10 in stolen bases (9), slugging percentage (.586) and on-base plus slugging percentage (.961). 


Carlos Gonzalez has three hits, homer and steal

(8:47 pm ET) Rockies left fielder Carlos Gonzalez went 3 for 5 with his 13th home runin a 6-5 loss to the Giants Saturday. He also had his ninth stolen base.

Gonzalez has homered in his last three gamesand has a .315/.397/.619 line in 181 at-bats. He's the only NL player with at least nine home runs and nine steals this season.


Pedro Alvarez powers up

(8:47 pm ET) Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez continues to show off his power, as he homered twice in a 5-2 wni over the Brewers Saturday.

Alvarez went 2 for 3 with a walk and three RBI. He has four home runs over the last six games, while batting .278.

Alvarez went 14 games to open the season with out a home run and has hit his 10 homers over the last 29 games. He is hitting .248 in that span, but he has 23 RBI and 16 runs scored to go with his 10 homers.
