Red Sox DH David Ortiz blasts three-run home run on Thursday

(11:41 pm ET) Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz went 1 for 5 in Thursday's 12-6 win over the Blue Jays. The one hit was a three-run home run, his 14th dinger of the season. The blast got the scoring started for the Red Sox, who put up an eight-run first inning on Thursday.

Ortiz has now homered eight times in his last 21 games. Despite the power surge, Ortiz is still batting just .179 over his last 10 contests.


Cardinals SP Tim Cooney strikes out six in no-decision

(11:39 pm ET) Cardinals rookie starting pitcher Tim Cooney gave up two earned runs in six innings of work against the Padres on Thursday.

Cooney, who was called up from Triple-A prior to the game, received a no-decision as the game went to the 11th inning tied at three runs apiece. He struck out six batters and limited his walks to just two.


Padres closer Craig Kimbrel records 20th save of year

(11:36 pm ET) Padres closer Craig Kimbrel recorded his 20th save of the season in Thursday's win over the Cardinals.

Kimbrel closed out the 11th inning of a 5-3 win with just 14 pitches. It was his 20th save in 21 attempts this season.


Padres SP Tyson Ross throws spotty outing, gets no-decision

(11:32 pm ET) Padres starting pitcher Tyson Ross wasn't impressive during his outing on Thursday against the Cardinals.

Ross allowed three runs on four hits in six innings of work, but tied a season-high with five walks. He did manage to strike out six batters, though his command wasn't always present during the outing.

Ross now has a 3.63 ERA 101 2/3 innings this season.


Twins' Glen Perkins closes out victory for 26th save on Thursday

(11:22 pm ET) Twins closer Glen Perkins worked a perfect ninth inning on Thursday to record his league-leading 26th save of the season. Perkins struck out a batter in his inning of work, preserving the 2-0 win over the Royals.

Perkins hasn't allowed a run in his last 16 innings of work, and has not blown a save this season. 


Royals SP Chris Young handed tough-luck loss on Thursday

(11:19 pm ET) Royals right-hander Chris Young was solid in his start against the Twins on Saturday, but Minnesota came out on top in the 2-0 final. Young allowed one run on six hits over 5 1/3 innings, walking one and striking out two. The outing lowered his ERA to 2.64, but dropped his record to 7-4.

The only run Young gave up came on an RBI triple by Danny Santana in the fifth inning. Otherwise, the veteran righty was able to avoid any serious damage against him. Young has allowed fewer than two runs in four of his last six starts.


Phillies SS Freddy Galvis knocks three hits against Brewers

(11:17 pm ET) Phillies shortstop Freddy Galvis went 3 for 4 with a walk and a RBI on Thursday agaisnt the Brewers.

Galvis is hitting .467 with seven hits and two RBI over his last four games.


Phillies CF Odubel Herrera records three hits, two RBI in loss

(11:15 pm ET) Phillies center fielder Odubel Herrera went 3 for 6 with two RBI on Thursday against the Brewers.

Herrera singled to center in the fourth inning, bringing two runners around to score.

Over his last four games, Herrera is hitting an impressive .533 with eight hits and four RBI.


Twins' Kyle Gibson shines in strong start Thursday against Royals

(11:12 pm ET) Twins right-hander Kyle Gibson had one of the finest outings of his young career on Thursday. Gibson held the Royals scoreless over eight innings in the 2-0 win. He struck out seven and walked four, as he evened his record to 6-6. 

Gibson worked around a high amount of baserunners, but he managed to avoid any serious damage. The fine outing lowered his ERA to 3.04. Gibson has allowed three runs or fewer in four consecutive starts.


Phillies LF Cody Asche homers, records two RBI in loss

(11:12 pm ET) Phillies left fielder Cody Asche hit his fourth home run of the season during Thursday's loss to the Brewers.

Asche went 3 for 5 with two RBI. He hit a two-run blast off Brewers starter Matt Garza in the second inning.

Over his last 12 games, Asche is hitting .381 with 16 hits, two home runs and five RBI.
