Will Middlebrooks slated to start rehab work next week
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5:11 pm ET) Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks is scheduled to start a minor-league rehab assignment at some point in the middle of next week, The Providence Journal reports on Friday. The team has not announced a specific date and minor-league affiliate for his rehab work.

Middlebrooks played just four games this season before being placed on the disabled list with a calf injury. He went 3 of 13 with one home run before the injury.

Jose Reyes set to play Saturday and Sunday
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5:05 pm ET) John Gibbons has confirmed that Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes will be removed from the disabled list after the game Friday night in Cleveland and will start Saturday and Sunday, per MLB.com.

Reyes has been sidelined since injuring his hamstring in the season opener.

Hisashi Iwakuma to begin rehab stint Tuesday
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5:01 pm ET) Mariners right-hander and 2013 stud Hisashi Iwakuma will begin a rehab assignment Tuesday at Triple-A Tacoma, per the Tacoma News-Tribune.

Iwakuma, who has been out all year with a middle finger injury, was among the surprises of baseball last season with a 14-6 record and 2.66 ERA.

His return in early May will be welcome by the Mariners, whose rotation has been battered by injuries.

Sean Doolittle does enough for Athletics to spur new deal
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(4:53 pm ET) The Athletics have signed reliever Sean Doolittle to a four-year contract that includes club options for 2019 and 2020, per MLB.com.

The 27-year-old Doolittle has been steady since joining the team in 2012. He has yielded three earned runs with nine strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings this season.

Jason Kubel out, Darin Mastroianni in Friday lineup
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(4:46 pm ET) Hot-hitting left fielder Jason Kubel is not in the lineup Friday night for the Twins against Kansas City southpaw Jason Vargas. He has been replaced by Darin Mastroianni, who will lead off.

Kubel is batting .340 on the season, but just .188 against left-handers.

Rangers make several roster changes
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(4:25 pm ET) The Rangers have announced that right-hander Nick Martinez will join the starting rotation as a replacement for Tanner Scheppers, who is on the disabled list. Martinez is set to start Tuesday in Oakland.

The team has also brought up southpaw Aaron Poreda from Triple-A. He will take the roster spot vacated by Scheppers until Martinez arrives.

The Rangers have also designated infielder Andy Parrino for assignment.

No worries about Carlos Santana
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(4:22 pm ET) Judging by my Twitter feed, Fantasy owners are at a breaking point with Carlos Santana, and I don't understand why.

Oh, I get that he's batting .157, and that's not good. But I don't think anyone who drafted him expected better than a .260 hitter. And I don't think anyone expected the route to .260 to be an even one from start to finish.

Just look at the way Santana's 2013 went. He had a month-long stretch beginning in early May in which he hit .169. He had a 13-game stretch a couple weeks later in which he hit .146 and a 14-game stretch in August in which he hit .115

He was the same player he is now -- or worse, actually -- off and on throughout last season and still ended up hitting a career-high .268. The only difference now is he's doing it when everyone's paying attention.

He's offered excuses, but he didn't just start bouncing around the diamond this year, and his groin isn't sore enough to require a day off. To me, those just make for better headlines than the most obvious one of all: That's baseball.

If I owned Santana, I'd stick with him and take solace in knowing that even at his worst, he's still able to reach base at a .350 clip. Most players can't say that.

Tanner Scheppers placed on DL by Rangers
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(4:17 pm ET) The Rangers have placed opening day starter and 2014 disappointment Tanner Scheppers on the 15-day disabled list with an elbow muscle injury, per the Dallas Morning News, which had stressed that it is not a ligament problem.

Scheppers struggled in all four of his starts this season.

Carlos Beltran not in Friday lineup
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(4:03 pm ET) An aching left shoulder and right wrist received when he flopped over the wall Thursday in Tampa Bay has sidelined Yankees right fielder Carlos Beltran for the game Friday night against the Rays.

Beltran and his .614 slugging percentage will be missed, though there has been nothing to indicate that his absence will be an extended one.

Wilson Ramos able to take light swings
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(3:59 pm ET) Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos was able to take light swings Friday, according to CSN.

Ramos said there was no discomfort, but admitted his wrist still felt weak. It was the first time he swung a bat since hamate surgery. Wrist weakness is common after this type of injury, so there's no concern about a setback at this time.
