Rangers acquire two minor-league pitchers

(10:37 pm ET) The Rangers have acquired pitchers Corey Knebel and Jake Thompson from the Tigers.

Texas will give up closer Joakim Soria in the deal. Knebel has tossed 8 2/3 innings in the majors this season, but has mostly pitched in the minors. He has a 1.62 ERA spread over two levels. Thompson is currently in Double-A. He's posted a 3.06 ERA over two levels. 


Tigers set to acquire Joakim Soria

(10:30 pm ET) The Tigers have traded for Rangers reliever Joakim Soria , according to 97.1 The Ticket. The move was confirmed by CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

The Tigers bullpen has struggled this season, collectively posting a 4.41 ERA. That is the fifth worst figure among major-league bullpens. Soria has been solid this season, posting a 2.70 ERA over 33 1/3 innings. It's unclear whether Soria will be used as the closer, or if he'll set up Joe Nathan.


Freddie Freeman slugs 14th home run Wednesday

(9:59 pm ET) Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman went 1 for 3 with a walk and a three-run home run in his team's 6-1 victory over the Marlins.

Freeman was just 1 for 24 in his previous six games coming into Wednesday, and his home run was just his first of the month. Even with his recent struggles, Freeman has still hit .284/.375/.479 with 14 home runs and 56 RBI in 388 at-bats.


Nathan Eovaldi gives up five runs in loss vs. Braves

(9:55 pm ET) Marlins pitcher Nathan Eovaldi was stuck with a loss Wednesday, giving up five earned runs on six hits and two walks in seven innings while striking out two in his team's 6-1 defeat against the Braves.

Eovaldi (5-6) has gone 0-3 over his last five starts while surrendering 22 earned runs in 31 innings. He fell behind 5-0 after just two innings when he surrendered a three-run home run in the second frame. Eovaldi owns a 4.20 ERA and 90:26 K:BB ratio in 130 2/3 innings. He's scheduled to take on the Nationals Monday.


Ervin Santana strikes out 10 in win vs. Marlins

(9:54 pm ET) Braves pitcher Ervin Santana picked up a win Wednesday, giving up just one earned run on six hits and three walks in 7 1/3 innings while striking out 10 in his team's 6-1 victory over the Marlins.

Santana (9-6) recorded double-digit strikeouts for just the second time this season after striking out only one batter in his previous start. He owns a 3.87 ERA and 107:37 K:BB ratio in 123 1/3 innings. Santana is slated to face the Padres Monday.


Dan Haren gets plundered by the Pirates

(9:51 pm ET) Dodgers pitcher Dan Haren had a rough start Wednesday against the Pirates. 

Haren gave up five runs on four hits over five innings. He struck out six and walked three. Haren threw 84 pitches during the appearance. Haren got off to a terrible start. He gave up two singles to open the game, and eventually walked another batter to load the bases. The first run against Haren scored on another walk as the bases were loaded. Haren then allowed a sacrifice fly and a two-run double. By the end of the first inning, he had given up four runs. 

Travis Snider added insult to injury in the second, hitting a solo shot off Haren. With the loss, Haren fell to 8-8 on the year. His next start will come against the Braves.


Francisco Liriano goes seven strong innings Wednesday

(9:50 pm ET) Pirates pitcher Francisco Liriano turned in a strong performance Wednesday against the Dodgers. 

Liriano struggled with his control early, walking two batters in the first inning. He also hit Carl Crawford with a pitch the following inning. Other than that, Liriano looked great early. He didn’t allow a hit until there was one out in the fifth inning. Liriano gave up two hits to open the sixth, and allowed a run to score on a ground out. He was able to pitch one more inning before being removed.

Liriano gave up one run on four hits over seven innings. He walked two and struck out four. With the win, Liriano improved to 2-7. His next start will come against the Giants.


Casey Janssen nails down 15th save Wednesday

(9:49 pm ET) Blue Jays reliever Casey Janssen nailed down his 15th save Wednesday against the Red Sox.

Janssen entered the game with a two-run lead. He tossed a perfect inning, striking out one batter in the process. Janssen lowered his ERA to 2.22 with the outing. 


Clay Buchholz struggles against the Blue Jays

(9:47 pm ET) Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz had a rough start Wednesday against the Blue Jays.

Buchholz allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits over six innings of work. He struck out one and walked four. Buchholz threw 99 pitches during the outing. Buchholz was spotted a three-run lead before he even took the mound, but couldn’t hold on. After putting the first two runners on in the first inning, Buchholz allowed a run-scoring double, an RBI groundout and another run-scoring double. After the first inning, the game was tied 3-3. 

Buchholz settled in at that point, tossing four scoreless frames. He ran out of gas in the sixth, giving up an RBI triple. Buchholz also wound up allowing a fifth run, but it was due to an error.

The loss dropped Buchholz to 5-6 on the year. His next start will come against the Blue Jays.


R.A. Dickey wins despite poor performance

(9:45 pm ET) Blue Jays pitcher R.A. Dickey was hittable Wednesday against the Red Sox.

Dickey allowed four runs on nine hits over six innings of work. He struck out five and walked one. Dickey threw 97 pitches. Dickey ran into trouble early. After giving up two singles to open the game, Dickey allowed a three-run home run against David Ortiz. Dickey settled in at that point, tossing four straight scoreless innings. He ran into trouble again in the sixth, allowing a one-run double. 

The Blue Jays offense showed up Wednesday, putting Dickey in line for the win. With the win, Dickey improved to 8-10 on the year. His next start will come against the Red Sox.
