Cardinals' Randal Grichuk (back) begins throwing Tuesday

(4:48 pm ET) Cardinals outfielder Randal Grichuk said he threw Tuesday for the first time since injuring his back, CBS St. Louis reports.

Grichuk added that he's hit off a tee twice and expects to begin a rehab assigment soon. The outfielder hit the disabled list with a lower back strain in mid-April. He's not expected to be ready to come off the disabled list when first eligible on May 2.


Red Sox's Rusney Castillo to return to Triple-A lineup Wednesday

(4:46 pm ET) Red Sox outfielder Rusney Castillo will return to the lineup at Triple-A Pawtucket on Wednesday. He will serve as the DH.

Castillo has been on the minor-league disabled list since suffering a shoulder injury diving for a baseball during a game April 11.


Twins 2B Brian Dozier out of the lineup Tuesday

(4:46 pm ET) Twins second baseman Brian Dozier is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Tigers, according to MLB.com. Dozier will get his first day off of the year after starting the first 19 games in a row. Dozier is hitting .205 with a home run and six RBI in 73 at-bats.

Eduardo Escobar will draw the start at second base and bat sixth. He is hitting .146 in 41 at-bats this season. The Twins are currently the underdogs (+125) against Detroit.


Tigers' Victor Martinez looking better with knee injury

(4:38 pm ET) Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez is still battling through a knee injury that has bother him to begin the season. But manager Brad Ausmus has noticed Martinez improving both health-wise and at the plate, according to MLB Network Radio.

Ausmus said Martinez has shown improvement over the last six games, where he is hitting .222 with five RBI in 18 at-bats. He also drew four walks and one HBP. Ausmus also noted Martinez's knee is still a factor, but it is getting better.


Hurdle: Andrew McCutchen hasn't been involved in Pirates' offense

(4:38 pm ET) Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen has gotten off to a slow start to the season. Entering action on Tuesday, he was hitting .175 for the year and had an 0-for-16 stretch that ended on Sunday. 

"We’ve had a handful of guys spark our club," manager Clint Hurdle said, per the Post Gazette. After listing five members of the lineup, Hurdle said. "All of them have been involved (in the offense). McCutchen really hasn't." 

Hurdle isn't ready to push the panic button. He's confident McCutchen will heat up. "I believe it’s just one of those stretches," he said. "He’s going to produce. He’s going to hit. He’s going to drive in runs. He’s going to score runs."


Royals' Rios might begin hand strengthening exercises in 5-7 days

(4:35 pm ET) Royals outfielder Alex Rios might begin hand strengthening exercises in 5-7 days, according to FOX Sports Kansas City. On Monday, Rios said he hoped to pick up a bat in 10 days.

Rangers 1B Mitch Moreland scratched from lineup Tuesday

(4:33 pm ET) Rangers first baseman Mitch Moreland has been scratched from Tuesday's game against the Mariners, the team announced.

Moreland, who is hitting .304 with a home run and nine RBI, will be replaced by Adam Rosales, making his seventh start of the year. Rosales is hitting .200 with a home run and three RBI in 20 at-bats. 


Nationals' Max Scherzer throws off mound, 'good to go'

(4:32 pm ET) Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer was able to throw off a mound on Tuesday, MASN Sports reported. 

Scherzer jammed his thumb in his last start and won't start on Tuesday night against Atlanta. 

He said he feels 100 percent and is "good to go", however. He doesn't believe he'll skip this turn in the rotation, just start a day late. Scherzer and the team still need to see how he feels on Wednesday morning before deciding on his availability. 


Gibbons: Blue Jays have discussed moving Aaron Sanchez to 'pen

(4:29 pm ET) The Blue Jays have discussed moving Aaron Sanchez to the bullpen, manager John Gibbons said Tuesday, per Sportsnet.ca. However, Gibbons added, "We talk about a lot of things."

The 22-year-old Sanchez is 1-2 with a 5.03 ERA and 1.68 WHIP through four starts.

Sanchez was in the running for the closer's role this spring before being moved to the rotation in the wake of Marcus Stroman's season-ending injury.

The Blue Jays haven't had consistency in the closer's role this season. Brett Cecil opened as the closer before being quickly replaced by rookie Miguel Castro. Cecil was elevated back to the closer's role Tuesday, as Castro is now struggling.


Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander plays light catch Tuesday

(4:29 pm ET) Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander threw an extremely light catch Tuesday, making 20 throws, manager Brad Ausmus said per MLB Network Radio.

Verlander, who is currently on the 15-day DL with triceps strain, has inflammation in his arm, but has gone down enough to make some throws, according to Ausmus. Verlander suffered the injury in his final spring training start and has yet to throw in a game this season.
