Rays SP Erasmo Ramirez shuts down Yankees
by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(4:19 pm ET) Erasmo Ramirez tallied another quality start for the Rays on Sunday, pitching six strong innings to help Tampa Bay avoid a sweep by the Yankees.

Ramirez allowed just three hits and one run to improve to 7-3 on the season. His lone mistake came on a sixth-inning home run by Alex Rodriguez. Otherwise, Ramirez rolled during his 99-pitch outing, striking out three while walking three.

Ramirez has now won five of his last six decisions, lowering his ERA during that stretch from 6.62 to 3.80.

Mets RP Jenrry Mejia (suspension) slated to return
by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(4:12 pm ET) Former Mets closer Jenrry Mejia will make his final Triple-A appearance Sunday and then join the big-league team to be activated Tuesday, per ESPN, marking the end of his 80-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs.

Mejia, who will not return to his closer role, may wind up serving as the Mets' primary set-up man, sharing duties with Bobby Parnell

Mejia will address his teammates upon his return. The reliever is ineligible for the postseason after testing positive for the steroid Stanozolol. He had 28 saves in 63 appearances last year.

Athletics SP Sonny Gray to start Tuesday
by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(3:26 pm ET) Athletics starter Sonny Gray, who has not pitched since June 25 while dealing with a nasty bout of salmonella poisoning, will return to the rotation Tuesday and make a start against the Yankees.

The announcement likely means that Gray would not pitch in the All-Star game, since his next start would be July 12, the last game before the break.

Gray is 9-3 with a 2.09 ERA so far this season. He has allowed just 81 hits in 107 2/3 innings pitched with 97 strikeouts.

Pirates claim Travis Ishikawa off waivers
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(3:02 pm ET) The Pirates claimed first baseman Travis Ishikawa off waivers on Sunday, per the Pittsburgh Tribune

Ishikawa was designated for assignment by San Francisco on Friday. He started the year on the disabled list, and there was no room for him on the MLB club when he returned.

The Giants called him up from Triple-A briefly in late June, and he was 0 for 5 in six games as a reserve.

In his previous stint with the Pirates, Ishikawa hit .206 in 15 games at the start of 2014, before the team granted him free agency at the end of April.
