Yankees RF Carlos Beltran (ribs) unable to start on Wednesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(4:17 pm ET) Yankees right fielder Carlos Beltran is absent from the starting lineup on Wednesday against the Angels. Beltran was forced to leave Tuesday's contest with a rib cage injury, and it is not clear if he will need a trip to the disabled list.

Garrett Jones is getting the start in right field and batting sixth on Wednesday.

Astros' Colby Rasmus still out on Wednesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(4:13 pm ET) As expected, Astros outfielder Colby Rasmus is not in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Royals. Rasmus was sent to the hospital on Monday due to a skin infection, and while he is still listed on the active roster, he will not be available on Wednesday.

The team has not provided any further details on Rasmus' condition.

Blue Jays SP Mark Buehrle improves to 4-0 in last seven starts
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4:10 pm ET) Blue Jays starting pitcher Mark Buehrle got plenty of run support during a 11-2 rout of the Red Sox on Wednesday. He allowed one run on four hits and no walks, while striking out seven in seven innings.

Buehrle (9-4) gave up a two-out single to David Ortiz in the first inning before retiring the next seven batters. He allowed a leadoff single to Xander Bogaerts in the fourth inning and a one-out triple to Alejandro De Aza in the fifth inning.

The veteran lefty tossed six scoreless innings before Pablo Sandoval had an RBI groundout in the seventh inning after Hanley Ramirez led off the frame with a triple.

Buehrle is 4-0 in his last seven starts. He hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in six straight starts. He has at least five strikeouts in four straight outings.

Astros SS Carlos Correa gets a day off on Wednesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(4:09 pm ET) Astros shortstop Carlos Correa is getting the first day off of his young career, as he is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game with the Royals. Correa had started each of the 22 games since being called up on June 8.

But after going hitless in back-to-back games for the first time, Correa will start Wednesday's game on the bench. Marwin Gonzalez will get the start at shortstop, batting eighth on Wednesday.

Cardinals' Matt Carpenter, Kolten Wong back in lineup Wednesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(4:06 pm ET) The Cardinals have returned third baseman Matt Carpenter and second baseman Kolten Wong to the starting lineup for Wednesday's matchup with the White Sox. Both players were rested on Tuesday against Chris Sale, but they will take their normal positions in Wednesday's lineup.

Red Sox might skip Rick Porcello's next start after dropping to 4-9
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4:03 pm ET) Red Sox starting pitcher Rick Porcello lasted just two innings during Wednesday's 11-2 loss against the Blue Jays, and now his next turn through the rotation might be skipped. Manager John Farrell hinted at the move following Wednesday's game by citing two off-days next week could allow the team to get creative with the rotation.

As for Porcello's shortest start of the season, the right-hander was in trouble from the first batter he faced Wednesday. Jose Reyes and Josh Donaldson led off the game with singles before Edwin Encarnacion launched a one-out, three-run homer. Russell Martin was then hit by a pitch before Justin Smoak parked a two-run homer.

Porcello (4-9) appeared to be doing better in the second inning, as he struck out two of the first three batters he faced. However, Jose Bautista hit a two-out, two-run homer to extended the Toronto lead to 7-0.

He was charged with seven runs on seven hits and no walks, while striking out three. Porcello is now winless in his last eight starts (0-7). His ERA stands at 6.08 through 16 starts.

Reds RP Aroldis Champan nails down 16th save on Wednesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(3:51 pm ET) Reds closer Aroldis Chapman worked an easy, perfect ninth inning on Wednesday to record his 16th save of the season. Chapman struck out one and needed just 12 pitches to retire the side in order, preserving the 2-1 victory over the Twins.

Chapman is a perfect 16-for-16 in save chances. He has not allowed a run in nine straight outings, and owns a miniscule 1.83 ERA overall this season.

Twins' Trevor May posts solid outing, takes tough loss Wednesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(3:47 pm ET) Right-hander Trevor May took a tough-luck loss on Wednesday, as the Twins were shut down by Johnny Cueto and the Reds. May was strong in the outing, allowing just two runs (one earned) over 6 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out six, but his record dropped to 4-7.

This was a nice bounceback effort for May, who was able to get all of one out before being pulled in the first inning with six runs allowed in his last start. May's ERA shrunk to 4.37 with Wednesday's performance.

Discounting that nightmare start in his previous outing, May has allowed more than three runs just once in his last eight starts.

Cubs 2B Addison Russell gets day off as offensive woes linger
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:42 pm ET) Cubs second baseman Addison Russell was held out of the lineup Wednesday against the Mets for the first time since June 7. It was just the fourth time he wasn't in the lineup since his promotion from the minors.

Russell is mired in a 1-for-17 slump in his last five games. He is batting just .154 in his last 12 games, dropping his season average from .259 to .239.

Reds SP Johnny Cueto throws eight dominant innings Wednesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(3:42 pm ET) Reds right-hander Johnny Cueto was excellent in his start against the Twins on Wednesday. Cueto went eight strong innings, allowing one run on four hits. He walked one and struck out eight, dropping his ERA to 2.84. He evened his record to 5-5 with this performance

This was Cueto's finest start since he twirled seven shutout innings on June 7. He retired 11 in a row at one point, and never really lost his composure in this one.

Cueto has pitched at least six innings in all but one of his 15 starts this season.
