Ryan Howard ready to return

(7:14 pm ET) Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard was back in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Marlins, after missing the team's previous two games with left knee soreness.

Howard had a cortisone injection in the knee and hopes that he will be able to play through any lingering issues moving forward. 


Chase Utley scratched with side discomfort

(7:11 pm ET) The Phillies have diagnosed second baseman Chase Utley with discomfort in his right side, after he was scratched from Tuesday's lineup. Utley had to be removed from the lineup after feeling the discomfort during batting practice. 

According to MLB.com, Utley will be re-evaluated Wednesday to determine the extent of the injury. 


Rangers add Neal Cotts to bullpen

(6:58 pm ET) The Rangers recalled reliever Neal Cotts Tuesday, MLB.com reports. Cotts comes up from Triple-A Round Rock as the corresponding roster move to Josh Lindblom being sent down following his start Monday.

The reliever is 3-1 with a 0.78 ERA and opposing batters are hitting .171 off him over 15 appearances with Round Rock.

Cotts has appeared in 284 major league games with the White Sox and Cubs for a career ERA of 4.63.

Josh Sale ready for reinstatement

(6:47 pm ET) Rays minor leaguer Josh Sale is eligible to be reinstated from his 50-game suspension for using performance enhancing drugs, but the team is waiting as he's dealing with a stomach virus, the Tampa Bay Times reports. He will be reinstated in a few days. 


Jemile Weeks 'playable' at shortstop

(6:44 pm ET) Athletics minor leaguer Jemile Weeks started at shortstop with Hiroyuki Nakajima starting at second base Monday, MLB.com reports. 

Oakland skipper Bob Melvin is hearing from the Triple-A people that Weeks "is very playable" at shortstop.

Weeks could become an option at shortstop down the line. For now, he's hitting .285 at Triple-A over 165 at-bats with two homers, 16 RBI and eight stolen bases. 


Hiroyuki Nakajima adding to versatility

(6:41 pm ET) Athletics infielder Hiroyuki Nakajima played second base Monday with the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats, MLB.com reports. He'll see some time at third base going forward as well and started there Tuesday. 

Manager Bob Melvin wants Nakajima to play as many positions as possible in order to make him more versatile at the major-league level in the future. His 20-day rehab assignment is up Wednesday and the A's will make a decision on him at that time. Nakajima is batting .250 at Triple-A with five RBI over 40 at-bats. 


Daniel Bard shut down from games at Double-A

(6:38 pm ET) Red Sox Double-A Portland pitcher Daniel Bard has been shut down from throwing in games, the Boston Globe reports Tuesday. 

Bard, who last saw game action May 15, is throwing only bullpens right now. Bard is getting the time off to deal with both mental and pitching struggles. He has a 6.39 ERA over 12 2/3 innings with Portland with 17 walks. 


DL not out of question for Shane Victorino

(6:35 pm ET) Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino (back, hamstring), who remains out of the lineup Tuesday in Chicago, is just day to day for Boston, the Boston Globe reports. 

That said, manager John Farrell said the team is considering a disabled list stint for Victorino, who could use that time to get completely healthy. 


Chase Utley taken out of lineup

(6:34 pm ET) Phillies second baseman Chase Utley was scratched from Tuesday's game for undisclosed reasons. Freddy Galvis took his place in the lineup for the game against the Marlins. 

No reason has been given for Utley's absence. 


David Ross likely to see rehab action

(6:33 pm ET) Red Sox catcher David Ross (concussion) is showing more improvement Tuesday, the Boston Globe reports. Ross is slated for rehab games by the end of the week. 

It was thought previously that Ross may not need rehab games, though that appears not to be the case now.
