Wilson Ramos increasing work in rehab
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(8:27 pm ET) Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos was able to grab a bat and take five dry swings Friday, the first time he has done so since suffering a broken hamate bone in his left hand. He said the hand feels strong, but he needs to build up strength in his wrist now.

"I was swinging easy, swinging the bat," Ramos told MLB.com. "Right now I'm working hard with my hand. My hand feels good. It's a just a matter of getting my wrist strong. That's what I'm working right now."

Ramos had the stitches taken out of his hand earlier in the week, and has been able to begin minor exercises to strengthen it. He is expected back sometime in May.

Jonathan Broxton closes out win over Cubs
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(8:14 pm ET) Reds reliever Jonathan Broxton picked up his second save in a row Friday, in a 4-1 win over the Cubs.

Broxton got through the ninth with little trouble, walking just one batter while striking out two. He has now appeared in three games since returning from the disabled list, allowing one hit and three walks while striking out four batters in three shutout innings.

Alfredo Simon tosses another quality start in win
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(8:11 pm ET) Reds pitcher Alfredo Simon continued his stellar start to the season Friday, earning his second win in taking down the Cubs, 4-1.

Simon tossed six solid innings for his third quality start in a row, allowing just one unearned run on four hits and a pair of walks. He struck out three batters while throwing 61 of 101 pitches for strikes.

Simon is now 2-1 with a miniscule 0.86 ERA through three starts, having allowed just two earned runs in 21 innings of work. He will try to keep his strong play up when he takes the mound next, Wednesday in Pittsburgh.

Jeff Samardzija gets little help in loss
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(8:08 pm ET) Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija put together another strong start Friday, but still took the loss in a 4-1 loss.

Samardzija tossed seven innings for the fourth time in as many starts, but was ultimately downed by a lack of help from his defense. He allowed one earned run in the fifth inning, and then lost the game on a throwing error by second baseman Emilio Bonifacio which allowed the eventual winning runs to come across in the sixth.

Samardzija allowed three runs in seven innings, but only one was earned. He surrendered six hits and a pair of walks, while striking out seven batters on 114 pitches.

Samardzija has been the victim of terrible luck, as his record stands at 0-2 through four starts, despite twirling seven innings with two or fewer earned runs in each. He will put his 1.29 ERA up against the Diamondbacks in his next start, as he searches for his first win Wednesday.

Casey Janssen set to miss two more weeks
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(7:42 pm ET) Blue Jays reliever Casey Janssen is expected to miss at least the next two weeks because of a strained muscle in his abdomen and lower back region, MLB.com reports Friday. Janssen was temporarily shut down on Thursday with the injury after tossing a scoreless inning in his rehab debut on Tuesday.

Jason Bartlett makes surprise retirement announcement
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(7:34 pm ET) Twins shortstop Jason Bartlett, who began a rehab stint Thursday with Class A Fort Myers, told manager Doug Mientkiewicz an hour before Friday's game he will retire, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. The 34-year-old finished his 10-year career with a .270/.336/.366 slash line, with 31 homers and 286 RBI in 892 games played.

A's maintain status quo with closer situation
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(7:25 pm ET) Athletics manager Bob Melvin re-iterated that his closer situation remains "status quo," meaning he'll continue his closer-by-committee approach, Comcast SportsNet Bay Area reports.

Jim Johnson started the season as the closer, but lost the job on April 10. Since losing his role as the ninth inning man, he has since allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out five over five scoreless frames.

Since Johnson lost his role, Luke Gregerson is 2 for 3 in save chances with a 1.93 ERA over 4 2/3 innings pitched. Sean Doolittle is 1 for 2 in save opportunities, and has allowed two runs over 3 1/3 innings since April 10.

Carlos Quentin will move to extended spring next
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(7:19 pm ET) Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin is not yet ready to begin a minor-league rehab assignment, but he is making progress in his recovery from a knee injury otherwise. According to MLB.com, Quentin will head to the team's facility in Arizona for extended spring training work, the final step before he moves on to playing in minor-league games.

Mets receive Zack Thornton, PTBNL for Ike Davis
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(6:57 pm ET) The Pirates have agreed to send minor-league pitcher Zack Thornton and a player to be named later back to the Mets in exchange for first baseman Ike Davis, the team announced Friday.

Thornton has yet to appear in the majors, but has seen success as a reliever in the minors. He has a 3.31 ERA at Triple-A, and has struck out 285 batters to just 63 walks in 252 1/3 career innings in the minors.
