Matt Cain 'checks out fine' with Dr. James Andrews
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(6:00 pm ET) Giants pitcher Matt Cain visited with Dr. James Andrews about his ailing right elbow and "checked out fine," according to Comcast SportsNet Bay Area on Thursday. Andrews gave the team his recommendation on the loose bodies in Cain's elbow, so a decision on his status should come soon.

Cain has been sidelined since July 9 and could be in danger of missing the remainder of the season.

J.D. Martinez picks up momentum with big game Thursday
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5:59 pm ET) The slump experienced by Tigers surprising outfielder J.D. Martinez is apparently over. He homered, singled, walked and scored twice Thursday in a defeat to the White Sox.

Martinez has rebounded from a 4-for-30 slide to slam five hits and score four runs in the last three games. He still boasts an impressive .325/.363/.605 this season.

Torii Hunter slams 15th homer in Thursday loss
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5:55 pm ET) Tigers veteran outfielder Torii Hunter continued to sizzle Thursday against the White Sox with his third home run in nine games.

Hunter blasted off in the third inning and added a single, walk and hit-by-pitch. He was not retired until the last out of the game. Hunter has six hits with four runs scored in his last three games combined.

Jason Lane outrighted to Triple-A
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5:52 pm ET) The Padres outrighted pitcher Jason Lane to Triple-A El Paso Thursday, two days after he was designated for assignment.

Lane appeared in three games for the Padres, allowing just one run in 10 1/3 innings while going 0-1.

Jake Petricka remains on roll by shutting down Detroit
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5:51 pm ET) Right-hander Jake Petricka continued to cement his hold on the closer role for the White Sox with a fine appearance Thursday in Detroit.

Petricka yielded only an infield single to Miguel Cabrera in a shutout inning for his seventh save. He closed it out by enducing Torii Hunter, who had yet to be retired, to ground out.

Taylor Teagarden clears waivers, sent to Triple-A
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5:50 pm ET) Mets catcher Taylor Teagarden cleared waivers and accepted an assignment to Triple-A Las Vegas, ESPN New York reports. Teagarden was rehabbing in the minors after landing on the bi-league disabled list on July 22 with a strained left hamstring.

Adam Eaton fills up stat book in defeat of Tigers
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5:47 pm ET) Leadoff hitter Adam Eaton played the role of offensive hero in a White Sox victory in Detroit on Thursday.

Eaton singled three times, scored twice, drove in two and put the cherry on top with a stolen base. He has 15 hits in his last 34 at-bats and a seven-game hitting streak as his stat line on the year has improved to .296/.362/.390.

C.J. Wilson expected to start Saturday
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5:46 pm ET) Angels pitcher C.J. Wilson is expected to make his return from an ankle injury Saturday, manager Mike Scioscia told the Orange County Register Thursday.

Wilson, who is recovering from an ankle and hip issue that has kept him out since July 9, is "penciled in" as the starter for Saturday in Tampa.

Nick Franklin shipped to Durham after deadline trade
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5:43 pm ET) The Rays have assigned newly acquired infielder Nick Franklin to Triple-A Durham, according to the Tampa Tribune on Thursday. Franklin was included in the deal that sent David Price to Detroit just before the trade deadline. He had only nine homers in 279 at-bats at Triple-A Tacoma.

Drew Smyly clobbered before move to Rays
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5:42 pm ET) Left-hander Drew Smyly did a five-and-fly Thursday - literally. He pitched five poor innings for the Tigers against the White Sox before leaving for trade destination Tampa Bay.

It could have been worse for Smyly, who worked around 11 hits to give up just four runs with no walks and two strikeouts. He did not retire Chicago in order in any inning.

It remains to be confirmed when Smyly makes his debut with the Rays. He is on schedule to pitch in Oakland on Tuesday.
