Mark Melancon picks up win vs. Braves
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(10:08 pm ET) Pirates closer Mark Melancon earned a win Wednesday, striking out one in a 1-2-3 ninth inning in his team's 3-2 victory over the Braves.

Melancon (2-3) surrendered a run and took a blown save in his previous outing, but he was back on form Wednesday, securing his first win since taking over the closing role in early May. He owns a 2.24 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 50:8 K:BB ratio in 52 1/3 innings.

David Carpenter allows unearned run in loss vs. Pirates
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(10:05 pm ET) Braves pitcher David Carpenter took the loss Wednesday, giving up one unearned run on one hit in two-thirds of an inning in his team's 3-2 defeat against the Pirates.

Carpenter (4-3) surrendered a leadoff single but retired the next batter before an error put runners on second and third with only one out. A sacrifice fly by the next man up ended the game in walkoff fashion. Carpenter owns a 3.69 ERA and 57:11 K:BB ratio in 46 1/3 innings.

Rick Porcello tosses complete game shutout
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(10:00 pm ET) Tigers pitcher Rick Porcello tossed a complete game shutout against the Rays Wednesday.

Porcello allowed just three hits during the outing. He struck out four and did not issue any walks. Porcello threw 104 pitches. Porcello gave up a double in the second inning, but was able to work around it. He did not allow a hit or walk over the next five innings. Porcello allowed a leadoff single in the eighth, but again managed to work his way out of trouble. The third hit came in the ninth inning. Desmond Jennings reached second on defensive indifference, but Porcello was able to get Matt Joyce to pop out and end the game.

With the win, Porcello improved to 14-8. He'll take on the Yankees in his next start.

Alex Wood surrenders two runs in no-decision Wednesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(9:59 pm ET) Braves pitcher Alex Wood wasn't a factor in the decision Wednesday, allowing two earned runs on four hits and one walk in seven-plus innings and striking out four in his team's 3-2 loss to the Pirates.

Wood delivered seven scoreless innings before giving up a walk and a ground rule double to open the eighth and end his night. Both runners would come around to score to deny Wood a win. He owns a 3.05 ERA and 124:37 K:BB ratio in 130 innings after surrendering two earned runs or less in each of his last five starts. Wood is slated to face the Mets Tuesday.

Gerrit Cole strikes out six in return Wednesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(9:59 pm ET) Pirates pitcher Gerrit Cole didn't factor into the decision in his return to the rotation Wednesday, allowing two earned runs on five hits and four walks in seven innings and striking out six in his team's 3-2 win over the Braves.

Cole was making his first start since July 4 after being activated from the disabled list earlier in the day. He surrendered RBI singles in the first and sixth innings, and his offense was able to get both runs back in the eighth. Cole owns a 3.69 ERA and 84:33 K:BB ratio in 92 2/3 innings. He's scheduled to face the Cardinals Tuesday.

Jake Odorizzi loses his 10th game Wednesday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(9:55 pm ET) Rays pitcher Jake Odorizzi turned in a strong start Wednesday against the Tigers.

Odorizzi gave up three runs on five hits over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked two during the outing. The Tigers struck early against Odorizzi. With two outs in the first inning, Rajai Davis doubled and Ian Kinsler singled home a run. Odorizzi then settled in, tossing five straight scoreless innings. He ran into trouble again in the seventh. The same exact sequence happened during the inning. Odorizzi struck out the first two batters of the inning, but allowed a double and run-scoring single to the next two hitters. He was removed from the game at that point. Another run score following his departure. That run was charged to Odorizzi.

With the loss, Odorizzi dropped to 9-10. He’ll take on the Orioles in his next start.

Starlin Castro may miss up to a week
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(9:44 pm ET) Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro may miss up to a week of action due to a family emergency, 670 The Score reports.

Castro is reportedly dealing with the death of a relative and three friends in a car crash in the Dominican Republic. He was scratched before Wednesday's game for the non-injury-related issue.

Chris Tillman becomes important hot-hand play
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(9:24 pm ET) With the season winding down and no time but the present to make up ground in the standings, you may no longer be able to wait out the most talented players, trusting them to make a bigger impact in the long run. Instead, you may have to turn to a hot-hand play.

And at least at starting pitcher, there are few hands hotter than Chris Tillman right now.

In his last 14 starts -- or more than half his season so far -- he has a 2.31 ERA and 1.01 WHIP, and he's been consistently good throughout that stretch, throwing 12 quality starts. A reduced strikeout rate early on was reason for skepticism, but over his last five starts, he has averaged 8.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

Most encouraging of all, we've seen him go on a run like this before, finishing out last season with a 3.39 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 8.5 strikeouts per nine innings in 11 starts. Of course, that doesn't explain why he had a 5.20 ERA over 13 starts in between. He seems to have a little Matt Garza in him, looking like waiver fodder half the time and a Fantasy mainstay the other half.

Can you trust that Tillman has legitimately broken out this time? I wouldn't, but again, that's not the most pertinent question to ask this time of year. Can you trust him right now? I would.

Mike Olt hits minor-league DL with hamstring strain
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(9:09 pm ET) Cubs minor-league infielder Mike Olt has been placed on the disabled list with a hamstring strain, MLB.com reports.

Olt hit .139/.222/.353 with 12 home runs and 30 RBI in 187 at-bats with the Cubs before being sent to the minors. He owns a .302/.348/.585 line with seven home runs and 24 RBI in 106 at-bats with Triple-A Iowa.

Everth Cabrera to begin baseball activities Thursday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(9:02 pm ET) Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera will join the team Thursday to begin baseball activities, U-T San Diego reports.

Cabrera was placed on the disabled list last Tuesday with a hamstring injury and hasn't played since Aug. 9. He has hit ..232/.272/.300 with three home runs, 20 RBI and 18 stolen bases in 357 at-bats.
