Diamondbacks OF Yasmany Tomas benched for lack of hustle
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:12 am ET) Diamondbacks third baseman/outfielder Yasmany Tomas believed he was giving full effort running to first base in the sixth inning Saturday. Chip Hale disagreed.

The result is that David Peralta replaced Tomas in right field for the bottom of the inning.

Tomas hit a routine grounder to Astros first baseman Chris Carter, who trotted to the bag and stepped on it. Tomas jogged about two-thirds of the way to first before peeling off. Carter stopped and turned toward the Arizona dugout.

"You now what, that's between Yasmany and myself," Hale told azcentral.com when asked about the benching. "We take care of this stuff inside the family here."

Hale assured that Tomas would be in the lineup Sunday. Meanwhile, Tomas insisted he was going all out.

"Yes, every day I try to do that," he said. "One hundred percent every single day. ... When the first baseman touched the base, I stopped."

Braves RF Nick Markakis out of line for first time since April 15
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:01 am ET) The Braves are giving right fielder Nick Markakis a rare break Sunday against Philadelphia. He is out of the lineup.

Markakis is sitting for the first time since April 15, though he has served twice as a designated hitter. He will not get a chance to extend his nine-game hitting streak unless he emerges from the bench.

Braves SS Andrelton Simmons (thumb) a no-go Sunday
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10:57 am ET) A thumb injury has Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons sidelined Sunday against Philadelphia.

Simmons sustained the injury while diving for a ball in the Saturday defeat to the Phillies. X-rays came back negative, but it remains to be seen how long he is out.

To add insult to injury, Simmons was in a 2-for-20 slide when he went down.

Marlins bench 2B Dee Gordon for Sunday game
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10:48 am ET) Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon is catching his first break since coming off the disabled list on Tuesday. He is out of the lineup Sunday against San Diego. Miguel Rojas is set to man the position instead.

Gordon is in a 1-for-15 slump that has shrunk his average to .330, its lowest point since April 11.

Reds 1B Joey Votto gets Sunday off
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10:42 am ET) The Reds have given slugging first baseman Joey Votto the afternoon off Saturday against Pittsburgh. Ivan De Jesus is playing the position instead.

Votto, who has not missed a game since June 17, owns a fine slash line of .309/.432/.532. His on-base percentage ranks fourth in the majors. He has 12 walks in his last seven games.

Royals 3B Mike Moustakas grabbing some pine again Sunday
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10:36 am ET) Struggling Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas is receiving his second straight day off Sunday against Toronto. Ben Zobrist is set to man the position instead.

Moustakas is on a 6-for-41 slide.

Struggling Pirates 3B Aramis Ramirez benched Sunday
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10:31 am ET) The Pirates are giving newly acquired third baseman Aramis Ramirez his first break Sunday. He is out of the lineup Sunday against the host Reds.

Ramirez has struggled at the plate since his arrival. He has hit safely in just two of seven games with Pittsburgh and is batting .133 (4-for-30) with no home runs.

Rays RF Steven Souza out Sunday; appears to be DL-bound
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10:26 am ET) Rays right fielder Steven Souza remains sidelined Sunday in Boston with a fractured hand sustained on a hit-by-pitch Saturday. He is likely to be placed on the disabled list.

Souza was on a five-game hitting streak that ended a 2-for-22 slide before going down.

Tigers RF J.D. Martinez back in action Sunday in Baltimore
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10:20 am ET) The scare is over - Tigers right fielder J.D. Martinez is fine for Sunday against the host Orioles.

Martinez appeared more seriously hurt when he fouled a pitch off his knee in the second inning Saturday and was removed from the game. But x-rays came back negative and he is ready to roll having hit safely in seven of his last eight full games.

Red Sox 3B Pablo Sandoval a no-go again Sunday
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10:14 am ET) The absence of third baseman Pablo Sandoval from the Red Sox lineup with a left wrist ailment continues Sunday with Tampa Bay in town.

He sustained the injury Thursday when he struck out on a pitch that hit him. He has just three at-bats since Tuesday.
