Tanner Roark secures win No. 10

(10:23 pm ET) Nationals pitcher Tanner Roark turned in a quality start Friday night against the Reds in Cincinnati, improving to 10-6 on the year. The right-hander permitted one run on three hits and one walk while striking out six over seven innings of a 4-1 victory.

Roark has won three consecutive starts. Over those three starts covering 21 innings, Roark has allowed only three earned runs. He owns a 2.82 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP over 20 starts (127 2/3 innings). His will look to win his fourth straight Wednesday in Miami.

Alfredo Simon can't make it past the fifth vs. Nationals

(10:22 pm ET) Reds pitcher Alfredo Simon was unable to make it out of the fifth inning and was pegged with his second consecutive loss Friday night at home against the Nationals. The right-hander was charged with three runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out three over 4 1/3 innings of a 4-1 defeat.

Over his last two starts covering 9 1/3 innings, Simon has permitted five earned runs. He owns a 2.86 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP over 20 starts (126 innings). He will look to snap out of his funk Wednesday at home against Arizona. He is 5-2 with a 3.12 ERA in eight starts at home this season.

Rafael Soriano converts 24th save Friday night

(10:22 pm ET) Nationals pitcher Rafael Soriano worked his way past a hit and a walk as he struck out two to close out a 4-1 victory over the Reds on Friday, Soriano has converted 24 saves in 27 chances, with a 1.13 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP over 40 innings of relief.

David Robertson picks up another save Friday

(9:57 pm ET) Yankees closer David Robertson picked up a save Friday against the Blue Jays.

Robertson entered the game with a two-run lead, and managed to hold things down. After inducing a pop out, Robertson struck out the second batter of the inning. With two outs, he gave up a single to Anthony Gose. Robertson ended the threat at that point, striking out Jose Reyes for the final out. Robertson has saved 26 games this season. 


Hiroki Kuroda struggles, but wins, Friday

(9:54 pm ET) Yankees pitcher Hiroki Kuroda turned in a below-average start Friday against the Blue Jays.

Kuroda allowed four runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked one during the outing. Home runs proved to be a big problem for Kuroda. After putting the first two batters on to begin the game, Kuroda fell behind to Jose Bautista. On a 3-0 pitch, he gave up a three-run homer. Bautista struck again in the third inning, hitting a solo shot. 

The Yankees scored early and often, which actually gave Kuroda the win. He improved to 7-6 on the year. His next start will come against the Rangers. 


Mark Buehrle lasts just three innings Friday

(9:53 pm ET) Blue Jays pitcher Mark Buehrle lasted just three innings Friday against the Yankees.

Buehrle proved to be quite hittable over the start, giving up nine hits. He allowed six runs. Buehrle struck out two and walked one during the appearance. Home runs were a major problem for Buehrle. After loading the bases to begin the second inning, Buehrle allowed a run-scoring single and a sac fly. Things really fell apart in the third. Carlos Beltran added a solo shot, and that seemed to knock Buehrle off his game. After giving up two consecutive singles, Buehrle allowed a three-run homer to Ichiro Suzuki. He was able to get out of the inning, but was taken out of the game to start the fourth.

With the loss, Buehrle dropped to 10-7 on the year. His next start will come against the Red Sox. 


Justin Masterson struggles with control during rehab start

(9:45 pm ET) Indians pitcher Justin Masterson struggled with his control during a rehab start Friday.

Masterson allowed five runs on four hits over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out four and walked six during the outing. Masterson loaded the bases prior to leaving the game. All three runs would come around to score, making his line look worse. Masterson is attempting to come back from a knee injury.


Cardinals working on signing A.J. Pierzynski

(9:35 pm ET) The Cardinals are working on finalizing a deal with free agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Pierzynski parted ways with the Red Sox in July. He is expected to be in St. Louis Saturday, per FOX Sports. He hit 254/.286/.348 with four home runs in 72 games.

Carlos Quentin exits game with apparent injury

(9:13 pm ET) Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin was forced out of Friday's game against the Braves with an apparent injury, according to the U-T San Diego.

Quentin doubled in the third inning and struck out in the fourth inning for the second time on the night. He appeared to be frustrated with himself after striking out and was taken out of the game. He was replaced by Wil Venable in the fourth. Quentin owns a .178/.286/.318 slash line with four homers and 18 RBI in 129 at-bats. His status remains up in the air for Saturday's game.

GM expects Ryan Howard to stay put with Phillies

(9:05 pm ET) Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. told reporters that first baseman Ryan Howard still has a future with the club. This comes a day after CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reported that the Phillies were trying to deal Howard before the July 31 deadline.

"I fully expect him to be our first baseman next year," Amaro said. "I don't know where people are coming up with him not having a future with us. He's a very big part of our organization."
