Francisco Liriano loses in return from DL
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5:46 pm ET) Pirates starting pitcher Francisco Liriano lasted just four innings in his return from an oblique injury during Sunday's 6-3 loss at Cincinnati. The veteran left-hander, who has been out since mid-June, allowed three runs on three hits and six walks, while striking out four.

Liriano (1-7) had a pretty smooth first inning, retiring the side in order and getting one strikeout. Unfortunately, it quickly unraveled for the veteran lefty in the second inning. The Reds sent nine players to the plate in the second inning and scored three runs on Kris Negron's three-run homer. It could have been worse, but the Reds left the bases loaded.

Liriano allowed just a walk in a scoreless third inning before loading the bases in the fourth inning. Luckily, he escaped the jam without allowing a run, but Liriano would not be back out for the fifth inning.

He has suffered a loss in four of his last six starts. Liriano is scheduled to start the first game after the All-Star break Friday against the Rockies.

Yordano Ventura earns win in first career relief stint
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(5:45 pm ET) Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings Sunday and was credited with the win in a 5-2 victory over the Tigers. Ventura (7-7) struck out three and allowed one hit, lowering his ERA to 3.22, in his first career relief appearance.

Ventura is scheduled to start Sunday, July 20 at Boston.

Justin Verlander looks good until the seventh
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(5:40 pm ET) Embattled Tigers starter Justin Verlander had a two-hit shutout through six innings Sunday against the Royals. But he loaded the bases on three straight singles, then allowed an RBI infield hit and an RBI grounder.

Verlander left with the game tied 2-2, but the bullpen allowed three more runs, two of which were charged to Verlander. In 6 1/3 innings, Verlander struck out three, walked one and yielded six hits. He's 8-8 with a 4.88 ERA entering the All-Star break.

Verlander's next start is scheduled for July 21 at Arizona.

R.A. Dickey pitches well in defeat
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(5:31 pm ET) Blue Jays starter R.A. Dickey allowed two runs on five hits over six innings Sunday, but his team gave him no run support in a 3-0 loss to the Rays. Dickey (7-9) struck out and walked three as his ERA dipped to 3.82.

Dickey will stay on regular rest despite the All-Star break, as he's scheduled to pitch Friday against the Rangers.

Juan Lagares batting better than .300 in July
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5:28 pm ET) Mets outfielder Juan Lagares had an RBI double and finished 2 for 5 during Sunday's 9-1 win against the Marlins. It was his 15th double and 23rd RBI this season.

Lagares is batting .326 (14 for 43) in 12 July games. He has four doubles, five RBI, five runs and one stolen base in that span.

Jake McGee picks up easy save
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(5:26 pm ET) Rays reliever Jake McGee tossed a perfect ninth inning Sunday to earn his seventh save in eight chances. McGee struck out two batters, closing out a 3-0 win over Toronto.

Kyle Kendrick gets hit hard in final start before the break
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5:22 pm ET) Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick was hit hard Sunday afternoon against the Nationals, dropping to 4-9 on the year. Making his final start before the All-Star break, the right-hander was shelled for five runs on five hits and no walks while striking out five over 5 2/3 innings of a 10-3 defeat.

Kendrick enters the break with a 4.62 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP over 19 starts (120 2/3 innings). He's been slotted third in the rotation, and will make his next start Sunday against the Braves in Atlanta. He is 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA in two starts against Atlanta this season.

David Price mows down Blue Jays, wins fourth straight
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(5:22 pm ET) Rays pitcher David Price won his fourth straight decision Sunday as he allowed one run over eight innings against the Blue Jays. Price (9-7) struck out five, walked one and scattered five hits in the 3-0 victory.

Lowering his ERA to 3.23, Price threw 112 pitches, 74 for strikes. He's gone at least eight innings in six of his last seven starts. Price is scheduled to pitch Saturday at Minnesota.

David Wright heads into All-Star break on offensive tear
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5:21 pm ET) Mets third baseman David Wright heads into the All-Star break having one, if not his best run offensively this season. He is batting .375 (27 for 72) in his last 19 games after going 2 for 4 with two doubles during a 9-1 win Sunday against the Marlins.

Wright also had two RBI, two runs and one walk Sunday. He has four home runs, 10 doubles, 12 runs and 15 RBI in his last 19 games.

Tanner Roark goes seven strong in win over Phillies
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5:16 pm ET) Nationals pitcher Tanner Roark ended the first half of the season on high note, turning in a dominant outing for the win Sunday afternoon against the Phillies in Philadelphia. The right-hander allowed one run on four hits and no walks while striking out six over seven innings of a 10-3 victory.

Roark enters the break with a 3.01 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP over 18 starts (113 2/3 innings). Depending on the status of Jordan Zimmermann, Roark's next start will come either July 21 or July 22 in Colorado.
