Hanley Ramirez scratched Tuesday with strained elbow
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7:30 pm ET) Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez was scratched from Tuesday's starting lineup due to an elbow strain.

Ramirez has been on fire at the plate lately, going 9 for 17 over his last five games. He has hit .278/.362/.445 with 13 home runs, 69 RBI and 14 stolen bases.

Matt Shoemaker to miss next scheduled start
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7:28 pm ET) Angels pitcher Matt Shoemaker will miss Saturday's scheduled start due to a strained oblique, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Shoemaker described the strain as "very mild," but the team will move ahead cautiously. He could make one more regular-season start if he recovers well enough over the next several days.

Seth Smith scratched from lineup with hamstring tweak
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7:25 pm ET) Padres outfielder Seth Smith was scratched from Tuesday's starting lineup due to a tweaked hamstring, U-T San Diego reports.

Smith is just 1 for 23 over his last seven games. He has hit .266/.367/.444 with 12 home runs and 44 RBI in 414 at-bats.

Joaquin Benoit could return Friday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7:13 pm ET) Padres clsoer Joaquin Benoit will throw a bullpen session Wednesday and could return to action as early as Friday, U-T San Diego reports.

Benoit has been out since Aug. 26 while recovering from a shoulder injury. He owns a 1.58 ERA and 60:14 K:BB ratio in 51 1/3 innings.

Nick Castellanos scratched from lineup with foot issue
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7:09 pm ET) Tigers third baseman Nick Castellanos was a late scratch from Tuesday's starting lineup due to left foot soreness, the team announced.

Castellanos fouled a ball off his left foot in Monday's game, and the team has decided to let him rest the injured foot Tuesday rather than risk further injury. The third baseman has hit .266/.313/.405 with 10 home runs and 60 RBI in 496 at-bats.

Matt Shoemaker has 'very mild' left oblique strain
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7:07 pm ET) Angels pitcher Matt Shoemaker is dealing with a "very mild" left oblique strain, the Orange County Register reports.

Shoemaker underwent an MRI Tuesday to determine the cause of the discomfort on his left side. He's day-to-day and questionable to make his next scheduled start Saturday.

Steve Johnson to undergo shoulder surgery
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7:02 pm ET) Orioles pitcher Steve Johnson will undergo surgery next Wednesday to remove a large bone spur behind his right shoulder, Comcast SportsNet Baltimore reports.

"It was either wait it out or stretch it out or get surgery and get it removed. It shouldn’t be a long recovery, but I think this is the best way to go," Johnson said.

Johnson has spent the season in the minors, posting a 6.23 ERA in 47 2/3 innings at three different levels, with most of his action coming with Triple-A Norfolk.

Eric Hosmer showing some life again
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6:59 pm ET) Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer went 1 for 3 with a double, a walk and a run scored Monday against the White Sox, which was enough to earn him a mention in my latest blog post chronicling the major happenings in Monday's games.

It doesn't seem like much on its own, but with that performance, he's now batting .321 (9 for 28) with two homers and a 1.049 OPS in his last eight games. Whoop-ti-do.

After the way his season has gone, he'd have to do something Herculean to convince us to draft him as a top 10 first baseman again next year. I'm talking a Ryan Zimmerman-in-2013-type correction so complete that we forget he was having a down year before it, as in a .380 batting average or so and half a dozen home runs. Real craziness.

But as we watch it all unfold, I think it's worth reminding everyone he's only 24. We probably have at least another five years of overreacting to every hot streak, wondering if it's a harbinger of more. And I remain convinced, given his pedigree and those stretches every other year when he appears oh so studly, that one day it will be.

Here's hoping he doesn't have that Herculean finish so we can get him for dirt cheap next year.

Geovany Soto available off bench Tuesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(6:51 pm ET) Athletics catcher Geovany Soto is available off the bench for Tuesday's game against the Rangers, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

"I'm good to go," Soto said Tuesday.

Soto hasn't played since leaving Friday's game due to back spasms. He has hit .211/.250/.316 in 57 at-bats.

Ryan Raburn heading for MRI on injured knee
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(6:47 pm ET) Indians outfielder Ryan Raburn is heading back to Cleveland to have an MRI done on his injured knee, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Raburn told his manager that he's feeling better, but depending on what the test uncovers, he could be shut down for the remainder of the season. He has hit .200/.250/.297 with four home runs and 22 RBI in 195 at-bats.
