Curtis Partch, Carlos Contreras called up from Triple-A

(2:39 pm ET) The Reds recalled pitchers Curtis Partch and Carlos Contreras from Triple-A Louisville Friday.

Contreras was sent down to Louisville Thursday, while Partch has not pitched with the Reds since he was sent down in May. 


Brandon Phillips placed on DL with thumb injury

(2:35 pm ET) The Reds placed second baseman Brandon Phillips on the 15-day disabled list Friday, after suffering a trhumb injury that will likely require surgery.

According to reports the previous day, Phillips could miss 8 to 12 weeks while recovering from a torn ligament in his left thumb. 


Scott Elbert resumes rehab assignment

(2:31 pm ET) Dodgers pitcher Scott Elbert is resuming his rehab assignment Friday at Class A Rancho Cucamonga, after he suffered a toe injury that forced him to sit out a week.

Elbert has been working his way back from Tommy John surgery, but has had a somewhat fitful rehab assignment so far. 


Tucker Barnhart sent back to Triple-A

(2:25 pm ET) The Reds optioned catcher Tucker Barnhart back to Triple-A Louisville Friday, just a few days after he was called up. He appeared in two games, going 2 for 5. 

Darwin Barney activated from paternity leave

(2:22 pm ET) The Cubs activated infielder Darwin Barney from the paternity leave list Friday, and made room on the active roster by optioning pitcher Kyle Hendricks to Triple-A Iowa. 

Grady Sizemore batting leadoff in debut

(2:13 pm ET) The Phillies have slotted Grady Sizemore into the leadoff spot for his team debut Friday against the Nationals. Sizemore was called up Thursday after hitting .289 in 45 at-bats in the minors. 

Yankees recall Matt Daley; Jim Miller designated for assignment

(2:10 pm ET) The Yankees recalled pitcher Matt Daley from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Friday, after Jim Miller was designated for assignment.

Daley had a 4.85 ERA in 13 innings of work prior to being sent down in early June.


Cardinals claim George Kottaras

(1:50 pm ET) The Cardinals claimed catcher George Kottaras off waivers from the Indians, reports CBS Sports Baseball Insider Jon Heyman. Kottaras, 31, batted 6 for 21 (.286) with three homers and four RBI before Cleveland designated him for assignment.

St. Louis needed depth at catcher after losing Yadier Molina to a torn thumb ligament.


Indians make pitching moves

(1:46 pm ET) The Indians optioned lefty T.J. House to Triple-A Columbus and recalled pitcher Austin Adams. House went 1-2 with a 4.40 ERA in nine games, eight starts, with Cleveland. He posted a 1.53 WHIP and allowed seven homers in 45 innings.

Adams went 2-1 with two saves and a 2.29 ERA in 30 appearances with Columbus.


Yanks acquire Jeff Francis

(1:42 pm ET) The Yankees acquired pitcher Jeff Francis from the Athletics for cash considerations. Francis, 33, was designated for assignment last week after going 0-2 with a 5.89 ERA in 10 appearances with Oakland.
