Red Sox DH David Ortiz has tight heel, likely to sit Saturday

(9:24 am ET) Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was lifted from Friday's game against the Mets in the bottom of the eighth inning due to tightness in his left heel. Ortiz left his mark before leaving the game, as he went 2 for 3 with his 27th home run of the season in the 6-4 victory.

Ortiz is unlikely to play on Saturday, and his status for the series-finale on Sunday is still in question.


A's summon Aaron Brooks to start Saturday; Max Muncy optioned

(9:10 am ET) Athletics rookie right-hander Aaron Brooks has been called up and will start Saturday's game against the Diamondbacks. Brooks has made four appearances (three starts) since coming over from the Royals in a deal right before the July 31 trade deadline.

His last start came back on August 12, when he was rocked for eight runs over 1 2/3 innings. He pitched in relief two days later and was then sent down to Triple-A. 

To clear room on the roster, infielder Max Muncy was optioned to Triple-A Nashville.


A's SP Felix Doubront (foot) has next start moved back a day

(9:04 am ET) Athletics pitcher Felix Doubront will have his next start moved back a day, as he is still being bothered by a contusion on his foot.

Doubront sustained the injury in his last outing on Monday when he took a comebacker off of his foot. The injury is not considered serious, but he will have his next start pushed from Sunday to Monday against the Angels, according to Comcast SportsNet California.


Astros C Jason Castro exits Friday with strained quad

(1:47 am ET) Astros catcher Jason Castro left Friday's game against the Twins with a right quad strain. Castro was lifted for a pinch-runner after hitting a one-out double in the fifth inning. 

Castro went 1 for 2 before being removed. Castro will be evaluated on Saturday before a decision on his status is made.


Athletics SP Sonny Gray picks up sixth loss of the year

(1:40 am ET) Athletics starter Sonny Gray was handed his sixth loss of the season on Friday against the Diamondbacks.

Gray gave up four runs, two of them earned, on five hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. He struck out five batters and gave up two walks.

With the loss, Gray dropped to 12-6 on the season with a 2.13 ERA.


Diamondbacks closer Brad Ziegler notches 24th save

(1:39 am ET) Diamondbacks closer Brad Ziegler recorded his 24th save of the season on Friday against the Athletics.

Ziegler finished the last 2/3 of the ninth inning after David Hernandez allowed two runs to let Oakland back in the game. He has a solid 1.46 ERA this year.


Diamondbacks SP Chase Anderson allows two runs in no-decision

(1:37 am ET) Diamondbacks starter Chase Anderson gave up two runs in a no-decision against the Athletics on Friday.

Anderson threw six innings while striking out three batters and allowing one walk.

Anderson (6-5) now has a 4.22 ERA in 134 1/3 innings this season.


Cubs SP Jason Hammel picks up sixth loss of the year

(1:35 am ET) Cubs starter Jason Hammel allowed three runs during his start against the Dodgers on Friday.

Hammel tossed five innings while recording three walks and five strikeouts.

With the loss, Hammel dropped to 7-6 on the year with a 3.42 ERA.


Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen recorded 26th save of season

(1:33 am ET) Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen recorded his 26th save of the season on Friday against the Cubs.

Jansen closed out the ninth inning of his team's win, not allowing a run or a hit while recording a strike out. He now has a 2.45 ERA this year.


Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw strikes out 14 batters in win

(1:32 am ET) Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw tied a season-high with 14 strikeouts on Friday against the Cubs.

Kershaw allowed just one run on three hits in eight dominant innings of work. The 14 strikeouts was one of the more impressive feats he has accomplished this season.

Kershaw improved to 11-6 with the win. He now has a 2.24 ERA on the year.
