Cubs catcher Kyle Schwarber to see time in left field
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(9:45 pm ET) Cubs manager Joe Maddon said Monday catcher Kyle Schwarber could see more playing time in left field after playing one inning in left during Sunday's contest, reports MLB.com.

"You saw him play one minute of outfield [Sunday]," Maddon said. "You might see him out there more often as we move along."

Schwarber has been working on outfield drills with coach Dave Martinez. He is hitting .396 with three home runs and 11 RBI in 16 games this season.

Rays OF Kevin Kiermaier leaves Monday's game with eye issue
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(9:35 pm ET) Rays outfielder Kevin Kiermaier left Monday's game against the Tigers with a left eye abrasion, which he suffered before the game, reports the Tampa Bay Times.

Kiermaier was 1 for 3 with one RBI before exiting the game. He is considered day to day.

Scuffling White Sox 1B Adam LaRoche benched for two games
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(9:18 pm ET) Struggling White Sox first baseman Adam LaRoche is set to sit for the first two games of the series in Boston.

LaRoche is batting just .212 with nine homers and 34 RBI with a terrible .347 slugging percentage. He has gone homerless over the last 25 games. He has just six hits in his last 49 at-bats.

"Probably give him two just to work out some things," Robin Ventura told MLB.com. "I know you can get frustrated."

Orioles INF/OF Steve Pearce destined for lengthy DL stay
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(9:11 pm ET) Orioles versatile player Steve Pearce is eligible for activation off the disabled list on Aug. 3, but he will likely need more time to recover from a left oblique strain sustained last Wednesday.

He cannot do any strengthening exercises or throw or hit without risk of re-injury, so he has been limited to rest and treatment, per MLB.com.

"On paper, as far as experience and track record of that injury, no," Buck Showalter said when asked about the possibility of Pearce returning when eligible. "But who knows? I don't know how quick we caught it."

Diamondbacks send RP J.C. Ramirez to Mariners
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(8:53 pm ET) The Diamondbacks have announced that they have traded reliever J.C. Ramirez to the Mariners for cash or future considerations.

Ramirez, who has been pitching at Triple-A Reno, tossed 15 1/3 innings for Arizona earlier in the year and posted a 4.11 ERA.

Manager: Rockies closer John Axford throwing as he has all year
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(8:46 pm ET) Walt Weiss does not sound like a manager ready to pull the plug on the closer status of Rockies right-hander John Axford.

Axford has yielded five earned runs on seven hits and six walks in his last six appearances. He had been lights-out before his slump and is still 16-for-19 in save opportunities.

"Some of those games where he did give up some runs, he didn't get a lot of breaks," Weiss told MLB.com. "Some groundballs had eyes. When he did walk a guy, it cost him. He's throwing the ball like he has all year."

Brewers 1B Adam Lind claims his back is improved
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(8:24 pm ET) Brewers shelved first baseman Adam Lind has declared that his back is feeling better and that he should be available to pinch-hit Monday, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Lind added that he should be back in the lineup Tuesday.

Pirates 2B Steve Lombardozzi headed to Indianapolis
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(8:01 pm ET) Veteran Pirates second baseman Steve Lombardozzi has cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A Indianapolis, per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Lombardozzi is hitless in just 10 at-bats at the major league level this season and has just 83 at-bats in the bigs over the past two seasons.

Red Sox 1B Mike Napoli ejected from Monday's game
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(7:43 pm ET) Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli was ejected during the first inning of Monday's game against the White Sox, reports the Providence Journal. Napoli was ejected for arguing balls and strikes. He was replaced at first base by Daniel Nava.

Report: Mets RP Jeurys Familia to keep closer role
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(7:37 pm ET) Despite the recent acquisition of pitcher Tyler Clippard, the Mets are expected to keep pitcher Jeurys Familia in the closer's role, a source told Newsday.

Familia has blown his last two save chances and is 27 for 31 in save opportunities this season. He has a 1.70 ERA over 47 2/3 innings this season.
