Matt Harvey's rehab schedule starting to become clearer
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1:21 pm ET) Though the Mets have remained staunch in their belief that Matt Harvey will not pitch this season, he is starting to eye a return to game action, according to the New York Post.

The Post reports Wednesday Harvey could begin throwing off a mound next week, and is eyeing a return to game action in September instructional league. Harvey still wants to pitch for the Mets this season, even if it is just one inning, according to the report.

Harvey is recovering from Tommy John Surgery, which he underwent last October. It still remains unlikely he sees the majors this season.

Pedro Alvarez out of lineup vs. RHP Wednesday
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1:07 pm ET) Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez is out of the lineup for the second game in a row Wednesday against the Giants, despite the team facing a right-handed pitcher yet again. He has started just one of the team's last six games, though it is not yet clear if the knee injury that bothered him last week is still an issue.

No serious talks for Cole Hamels
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12:51 pm ET) The Phillies appear willing to move some of their veteran pitchers before Thursday's deadline, but MLB.com reports Cole Hamels is not likely to be among them.

Though reports have indicated there is some willingness to discuss Hamels, no substantive talks have occurred with any team, according to the report. The Phillies have not even reached the point in any talks where prospect names have been discussed.

Hamels lowered his ERA to 2.55 whole improving his record to 6-5 with eight scoreless innings Tuesday. Hamels is under contract through next season, and could be a candidate to be traded in the offseason.

Rockies, Mets blockbuster unlikely to come together
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12:40 pm ET) The Rockies and Mets have gotten together a few times to discuss major deal involving Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez, but CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports Wednesday any move is unlikely to come before Thursday's deadline.

"Unless we do speed dating, I think that's safe to say [that any deal will wait until winter]," one person involved in the talks told Heyman.

Gonzalez and Tulowitzki are both under long-term deals with the Rockies, but the team's struggles have pushed them into considering a move. The Mets would likely have to part with much of their young pitching talent to get the deal done, but that will likely have to wait until the offseason. The report also indicates a deal for Gonzalez is more likely than Tulowitzki, once talks resume after Thursday.

Wednesday foot surgery to end season for Josh Zeid
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12:39 pm ET) Astros right-hander Josh Zeid is out for the year. He is set to undergo foot surgery Wednesday.

The 27-year-old Zeid, who had hoped to avoid the procedure, finishes his 2014 season without a decision and a 6.97 ERA in 23 appearances.

Report: Rockies not looking to move Brett Anderson
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12:31 pm ET) Rockies pitcher Brett Anderson is set to take the mound Wednesday against the Cubs, and FOXSports.com reports it will not be his last appearance with the team.

The Rockies are not considering trading Anderson according to the report, and will likely look to lock him up for next season and beyond. Anderson has an option for $12 million for next season, and the Rockies plan to pick up that option, and possibly extend him beyond that.

Anderson has a 3.24 ERA in 33 1/3 innings for the Rockies this season, while missing three months due to a broken finger.

Illness costs Chris Carter lineup spot against Athletics
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12:29 pm ET) Astros outfielder Chris Carter, who has slumped a bit after a hot streak, has been scratched from the Wednesday afternoon lineup against visiting Oakland with an illness.

Carter has one hit in his last 12 at-bats, is on a roll in general with two home runs and nine RBI in his last nine games.

Michael Pineda ready to roll into rehab start Sunday
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12:20 pm ET) Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda is set to make a rehab start Sunday, though his destination has yet to be determined.

Pineda, who threw 45 pitches in a simulated game Tuesday, has been out with a shoulder injury since late April. His minor league rehab is expected to last about a month.

"I think you've got to get him to where he can go 90 pitches, and you feel good abot it (and) where he's not fatiguing," Joe Girardi told the New York Daily News. "I think if you get there, then he's a guy you think about."

Pineda compiled a 2-2 record and 1.83 ERA in four starts before a 10-game suspension from Major League Baseball for his use of pine tar on the mound. He sustained the injury upon his return.

Adam Jones opens game with solo homer
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12:19 pm ET) Orioles outfielder Adam Jones snapped out of a bit of a home power outage Tuesday, in a 7-6 win over the Angels.

Jones ended a six-game streak without a home run Tuesday, as he clubbed a solo shot in the first inning to get the Orioles on the board. It was his only contribution to the winning effort, as he finished 1 for 5 with one strikeout.

Jones has seen his average fall to .292 during a month of July that has seen him hit just .244/.286/.456. He still has five home runs and 16 RBI during the month, bringing his season total to 20 and 65, respectively.

Nick Markakis drives in three with homer in win
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12:18 pm ET)  Orioles outfielder Nick Markakis played a big part in Tuesday's 7-6 win over the Angels, as he drove in three runs.

Markakis drove in all three runs in the fourth inning with his home run, his eighth of the season. He finished the game 2 for 6 overall, with one strikeout and one run scored.

Markakis has had a successful bounceback season, hitting .285/.346/.393 in 438 at-bats. He also has eight home runs in just 105 games, after hitting just 10 in 160 games a year ago.
