Diamondbacks part ways with Xavier Paul

(4:42 pm ET) The Diamondbacks have released outfielder Xavier Paul Friday, the team announced.

Paul appeated in 14 games with the Diamondbacks, picking up just two hits in 20 at-bats, while striking out eight times.  


Jonny Venters will have third Tommy John procedure

(4:38 pm ET) Braves pitcher Jonny Venters will undergo Tommy John surgery for the third time the team announced Friday, as he has been diagnosed with yet another torn ligament in his elbow.

Venters has not pitched in the majors since 2012, but the 29-year-old will attempt yet another comeback. He is unlikely to be ready to pitch in the majors again until the start of the 2016 season, at the earliest, at this point. 


Masahiro Tanaka slowed down with "general soreness" in arm

(4:31 pm ET) Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka has suffered a setback in his recovery from a partially torn UCL, though there is currently no indication it is related to the ligament, the team announced Friday.

Tanaka, who has been throwing off a mound recently, will travel back to New York to continue strengthening his right arm. At this point, he does not have a visit with a doctor scheduled, as this issue is just considered general soreness in his right arm.


Alex Rios returns to lineup Friday

(4:28 pm ET) Rangers outfielder Alex Rios was back in the starting lineup Friday against the Astros, after missing the team's previous game with a thumb injury.

Rios wanted to play in Thursday's game, but was held out as a precaution, so it is not a big surprise to see him back in the lineup. He is batting third and starting in right field for the second game of the series.  


Ryan Rua gets the call Friday

(4:25 pm ET) The Rangers purchased the contract of 24-year-old infielder Ryan Rua from Triple-A Round Rock Friday, the team announced.

Rua has never appeared in a major-league game, but was hitting a solid .313/.382/.505 in 58 games at Round Rock prior to his callup. 


Jim Adduci hits concussion DL following collision

(4:22 pm ET) The Rangers placed outfielder Jim Adduci on the 7-day concussion disabled list Friday, the team announced.

Adduci suffered the injury during Thursday's game,w hen he collided with a teammate on a foul ball. He will be monitored moving forward to determine when he can pass the league's concussion protocol and be cleared to return.  


Rangers DFA Phil Irwin

(4:22 pm ET) The Rangers designated pitcher Phil Irwin for assignment Friday, in order to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.

Irwin had been pitching at Triple-A Round Rock prior to his release, where he had a 3.51 ERA in 51 1/3 innings. He also appeared in one game as a starter in the majors, allowing three runs over four innings of work.  


Robbie Grossman sidelined by ankle Friday

(4:15 pm ET) Astros outfielder Robbie Grossman is not in the starting lineup Friday against the Rangers, as he continues to deal with an ankle injury suffered Wednesday.

Grossman remains day to day moving forward, and Thursday's off-day apparently did not give him enough time to get back to full health. His status for the rest of the weekend series is not yet known. 


Anthony Ranaudo called up to start Friday

(4:13 pm ET) The Red Sox recalled pitcher Anthony Ranaudo from Triple-A Pawtucket Friday, ahead of his start against the Rays.

Ranauda will be making his third major-league start, having allowed six runs over 12 innings in his previous two outings. The team's plans with him beyond Friday are not yet known. 


Edwin Escobar sent back to Triple-A

(4:11 pm ET) The Red Sox optioned pitcher Edwin Escobar to Triple-A Pawtucket Friday, in order to open a spot on the active roster. He appeared in just one game during his most recent stint with the team, tossing one scoreless inning.
