Wood ran into problems in the third when he allowed an RBI double to Odubel Herrera. Wood then loaded the bases in the seventh before getting pulled for Joel Peralta. He then allowed a grand slam to Maikel Franco, plating three runs against Wood.

Wood, now 7-7, moved his ERA to 3.65 in 125 2/3 innings of work this season. He will look to bounce back Sunday against the Pirates.

Giles came on in the eighth with runners on second and third and managed to get Jimmy Rollins to strikeout. Then in the ninth, Giles allowed a leadoff walk before getting two of the final three batters to strikeout to end the game. Giles lowered his ERA to 1.72 in 47 innings of work.

Mets designate RP Alex Torres for assignment on Tuesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(11:00 pm ET) Mets reliever Alex Torres was designated for assignment on Tuesday. Torres was acquired from the Padres right at the end of spring training, but he wound up struggling to the tune of a 3.15 ERA and a 1.515 WHIP over 34 1/3 innings of work.

The move was necessitated by the acquisition of reliever Eric O'Flaherty from the A's on Tuesday.

Yankees OF Chris Young rips 13th home run of the season
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(10:57 pm ET) Yankees outfielder Chris Young went 3 for 4 at the plate in New York's 13-3 win over the Red Sox on Tuesday. Young did the bulk of his damage in the seventh when he blasted the first pitch he saw from Alexi Ogando over the left field wall for a three-run home run.

Young, who also scored four runs in the game, is now hitting .268 with 36 RBI on the year.

Mets get RP Eric O'Flaherty in trade with A's on Tuesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(10:56 pm ET) The Mets have acquired left-handed reliever Eric O'Flaherty and cash from the Athletics in exchange for a player to be named later. With Jerry Blevins (broken forearm) still without a timetable, the Mets were in needed of another lefty specialist in the bullpen.

O'Flaherty, 30, was designated for assignment by the A's back on Saturday. He went 1-2 with a 5.91 ERA over 21 1/3 innings with the A's this season. He has battled injuries over the past couple of years, totaling 40 appearances between 2013 and 2014.

But in his glory days, O'Flaherty posted some very impressive numbers. In 2011-2012, he recorded a shiny 1.31 ERA in 131 innings for the Braves.

In a corresponding move, the Mets designated reliever Alex Torres for assignment.
