Greg Holland records 28th save Wednesday

(11:29 pm ET) Royals closer Greg Holland needed 28 pitches to pick up his 28th save Wednesday, issuing one walk and striking out two in a scoreless ninth inning to end his team's 3-2 win over the Twins.

Holland topped his previous season-high of 27 pitches in the outing but still managed to walk away with the save. He owns a 1.82 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 60:12 K:BB ratio in 39 2/3 innings.


Report: Ryan Ludwick available in trade talks

(11:26 pm ET) The Reds are telling teams that outfielder Ryan Ludwick is available to be traded, USA Today reports.

Ludwick has a $7.5 million salary this year and a $9 million mutual option for 2015 that carries a $4.5 millino buyout. He has hit .261/.326/.394 with six home runs and 27 RBI in 249 at-bats.


Phil Hughes tosses quality start in loss vs. Royals

(11:23 pm ET) Twins pitcher Phil Hughes took a loss in a quality start Wednesday, giving up three earned runs on seven hits and one walk in six innings and striking out five in his team's 3-2 defeat against the Royals.

Hughes (10-8) had to leave his last start after just three innings when he was hit by a line drive, but he was able to come back Wednesday and pitch a solid game, though he took his third straight loss after giving up three runs in an ugly sixth inning. Hughes owns a 4.12 ERA and 118:13 K:BB ratio in 137 2/3 innings. He's scheduled to face the Padres Tuesday.


Danny Duffy walks five in win vs. Twins Wednesday

(11:23 pm ET) Royals pitcher Danny Duffy picked up a win Wednesday after giving up one earned run on four hits and five walks in 5 2/3 innings while striking out four in his team's 3-2 victory over the Twins.

Duffy (6-10) retired six of the seven batters he faced in the first two innings but gave up a solo home run to the other. Despite constantly getting into trouble over the next four innings, he was able to prevent any runs from scoring. Duffy owns a 2.42 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 80:39 K:BB ratio in 104 innings. He's scheduled to face the Diamondbacks Tuesday.


Jacoby Ellsbury slugs ninth home run Wednesday

(11:09 pm ET) Yankees outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury went 1 for 4 with a solo home run in his team's 3-2 loss to the Rangers Wednesday.

Ellsbury entered the game just 1 for 22 in his previous seven outings but managed to deliver his fifth home run of July in the third inning Wednesday. He has hit .279/.344/.408 with nine home runs, 48 RBI and 28 stolen bases in 402 at-bats.


Brett Gardner continues homer barrage Wednesday

(11:06 pm ET) Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner went 1 for 4 with a solo home run in his team's 3-2 loss to the Rangers Wednesday.

Gardner led off the game with his fourth home run in the last three days, but unlike in his other two games, he wasn't able to add on any other hits. Still, the power barrage has given him a .283/.356/.460 line with 14 home runs, 47 RBI and 17 stolen bases in 389 at-bats.


Neftali Feliz records third save Wednesday

(11:04 pm ET) Rangers pitcher Neftali Feliz picked up his third save Wednesday, striking out one in a 1-2-3 ninth inning to finish off his team's 3-2 win over the Yankees.

Feliz needed just seven pitches to record his three outs, and he's managed to deliver saves in three straight appearances since taking over the closing job last week. He owns a 2.03 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 5:4 K:BB ratio in 13 1/3 innings.


Hiroki Kuroda gives up three runs in loss vs. Rangers

(10:59 pm ET) Yankees pitcher Hiroki Kuroda took a loss Wednesday, surrendering three earned runs on nine hits and one walk in seven innings while striking out four in his team's 3-2 defeat against the Rangers.

Kuroda (7-7) gave up all three runs on five hits in the bottom of the first inning and settled down for the remainder of the start, but his offense couldn't overcome the deficit. He owns a 3.98 ERA and 93:27 K:BB ratio in 135 2/3 innings. Kuroda is scheduled to face the Tigers Tuesday.


Colby Lewis surrenders two home runs in win Wednesday

(10:59 pm ET) Rangers pitcher Colby Lewis picked up a win Wednesday, giving up two earned runs on four hits and two walks in seven innings and striking out four in his team's 3-2 victory over the Yankees.

Lewis (7-8) gave up a pair of solo home runs, one in the first inning and one in the third, but he was able to put the breaks on a three-start losing streak Wednesday. He owns a 5.98 ERA and 84:34 K:BB ratio in 102 1/3 innings. Lewis is slated to face the White Sox Tuesday.


Nick Castellanos slugs seventh home run Wednesday

(10:37 pm ET) Tigers third baseman Nick Castellanos went 2 for 4 with a home run and a career-high four RBI in his team's 7-2 win over the White Sox Wednesday.

Castellanos put an exclamation point on a six-run first inning by swatting a three-run home run. He added a fourth RBI on a single in the seventh inning. Castellanos has hit .267/.312/.409 with seven home runs and 41 RBI in 330 at-bats.
