Eugenio Suarez's back still an issue Thursday

(4:59 pm ET) Tigers shortstop Eugenio Suarez was out of the lineup yet again Thursday against the White Sox, due to back stiffness. Suarez has not played since leaving Tuesday's game, and is considered day to day at this point.  

Josh Rutledge healthy enough to play Thursday

(4:57 pm ET) Rockies infielder Josh Rutledge was out of the lineup for the fourth straight game Thursday against the Cubs due to an illness, but was feeling well enough to come into the game as a defensive replacement.

Rutledge entered the game in a double switch during the seventh inning, playing shortstop and hitting ninth in one plate appearance. He should be healthy enough to play moving forward. 


Robert Refsnyder could be option to start at 2B in 2015

(4:55 pm ET) With the Yankees acquisition of Martin Prado, general manager Brian Cashman told reporters Thursday prospect Robert Refsnyder will move from right field back to second base at Triple-A. Cashman added Refnsyder could be an option to start at second base in 2015.

Refsnyder is having a big year in the minors, batting .323 with a .394 on-base percentage, .525 slugging percentage and .919 OPS in 106 games between Double-A and Triple-A.


GM: Francisco Lindor to stay in Columbus for now

(4:53 pm ET) Indians prized prospect Francisco Lindor will remain at Triple-A Columbus for now despite the deal that sent starting shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera to Washington.

That's the word from general manager Chris Antonetti, per the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram.

The shortstop duties will be handled by veteran Mike Aviles and rookie Jose Ramirez. The 20-year-old Lindor has been hitting well since his promotion to Columbus with 10 hits in 31 at-bats and a .400 on-base percentage.


Jason Vargas making return Saturday

(4:53 pm ET) Royals pitcher Jason Vargas has been cleared to return to the rotation, and will make his first start in nearly a month Saturday in Oakland.

Vargas has recovered fully from an appendectomy, and made a simulated start Tuesday, which convinced the team he was ready to return. He had a 3.31 ERA in 125 innings prior to the injury.

Yankees set to designate Brian Roberts for assignment

(4:47 pm ET) Yankees second baseman Brian Roberts will be designated for assignment to clear a roster spot for Stephen Drew, who was acquired in a trade Thursday. 

Roberts struggled in his only season with the Yankees, batting .237 with five home runs, 16 doubles and 21 RBI in 91 games.


Victory Caratini heading to Cubs at deadline

(4:42 pm ET) The Cubs acauired catching prospect Victor Caratini from the Braves in a deadline-day deal for James Russell and Emilio Bonifacio, the teams announced Thursday.

Caratini was a second-round pick by the Braves in 2013, and is hitting .279/.352/.406 as a 20-year-old at Class A Rome this season. 


Jonathan Papelbon, Marlon Byrd, A.J. Burnett remain with Phils

(4:39 pm ET) The Phillies did not make any trades by Thursday's non-waiver trade deadline, despite outfielder Marlon Byrd, starting pitcher A.J. Burnett and closer Jonathan Papelbon being mentioned in trade rumors the last few weeks.

David Buchanan set to start Thursday against Blue Jays

(4:38 pm ET) The Astros have moved right-hander Jake Buchanan  from the bullpen into a starting role for Thursday night against Toronto, per CSNHouston.com.

Buchanan has struggled in two stints with Houston this season with nine runs allowed in 11 1/3 innings. But he is coming off an appearance in whch he pitched shutout ball for 2 1/3 innings and fanned four.

He could remain in the rotation to replace just-traded Jarred Cosart.
