Jedd Gyorko homers, drives in four in big night Wednesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(1:24 am ET) Padres second baseman Jedd Gyorko delivered a big performance Wednesday, going 3 for 5 with a double, a home run and four RBI in his team's 12-1 win over the Cardinals.

Gyorko slapped a solo home run in the fourth inning, but his big hit came during an eight-run seventh, when Gyorko smacked a double with the bases loaded to drive in three. He's 6 for 11 in three games since returning from a lengthy absence caused by plantar fasciitis. Gyorko has hit .181/.232/.302 with six home runs and 29 RBI in 215 at-bats.

Jesse Hahn tosses seven one-run innings in win Wednesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(1:24 am ET) Padres pitcher Jesse Hahn earned a win Wednesday, giving up just one earned run on four hits and two walks in seven innings and striking out three in his team's 12-1 victory over the Cardinals.

He hasn't surrendered a home run since serving up two in his debut eight starts ago. Hahn owns a 2.01 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 54:21 K:BB ratio in 53 2/3 innings. He's scheduled to face the Twins Tuesday.

Joe Kelly surrenders four runs in loss vs. Padres
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(1:23 am ET) Cardinals pitcher Joe Kelly took a loss Wednesday, giving up four earned runs on seven hits and one walk in five innings and striking out four in his team's 12-1 defeat against the Padres.

Kelly (2-2) gave up runs in the first, third and fourth innings as he turned in his second straight disappointing outing, giving up nine earned runs in 9 2/3 innings over his last two starts. He owns a 4.37 ERA and 25:10 K:BB ratio in 35 innings. Kelly is scheduled to face the Red Sox Tuesday, but a last-minute trade acquisition could knock him out of the rotation.

Report: Cardinals, Pirates leading charge for Jon Lester
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(12:37 am ET) The Cardinals and Pirates are "pushing hardest" for Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester, though the Dodgers are still involved as well, FOXSports.com reports.

The Dodgers aren't going to part with one of their top prospects in a deal for Lester, who is set to become a free agent, and the Red Sox seem likely to pick up a better youngster from either of the NL Central contenders as a result. Lester is likely to be moved before Thursday's trade deadline.

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7/30/2014) Cubs third baseman Luis Valbuena went 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBI in his team's 6-4 loss to the Rockies Wednesday.

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Wright (0-2) has been hittable recently, and he hasn't managed to post an outing with no baserunners since July 5. He's surrendered four earned runs in 7 1/3 innings during that stretch. Wright owns a 2.84 ERA and 27:11 K:BB ratio in 31 2/3 innings.

Adam Ottavino earns first career save Wednesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7/30/2014) Rockies pitcher Adam Ottavino gave up one hit and struck out one in a scoreless 10th inning Wednesday to earn his first career save in his team's 6-4 win over the Cubs.

Dan Runzler heading to Japan after Triple-A release
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7/30/2014) The Giants released pitcher Dan Runzler from Triple-A Fresno Wednesday so that he could sign with the Orix Buffaloes in Japan, the Associated Press reports.

Rob Scahill picks up first win Wednesday vs. Cubs
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Brett Anderson strikes out nine in no-decision vs. Cubs
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7/30/2014) Rockies pitcher Brett Anderson didn't factor into Wednesday's decision after giving up two earned runs on 11 hits in seven innings while striking out nine and walking none in his team's 6-4 win over the Cubs.

It was his third straight quality start in the second half, and Anderson has surrendered just three earned runs in 20 1/3 innings during that stretch. He owns a 3.12 ERA and 27:13 K:BB ratio in 40 1/3 innings. Anderson is scheduled to face the Cubs again next Wednesday, this time at home.
