Prior to his two-hit performance Monday, Valbuena was hitting .069 with two RBI in his last seven games.

Orioles SP Ubaldo Jimenez strikes out eight in Monday's loss
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(11:11 pm ET) Orioles pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez allowed two runs on four hits during Monday's 5-2 loss to the Astros.

Jimenez tossed six innings and struck out eight batters and walked two. His biggest mistake was giving up a solo home run to Luis Valbuena in the fifth inning. He received a no-decision for his effort.

Jimenez has tossed at least six innings in four of his last five starts and has given up three or less runs in six of his last seven starts. His next expected start is scheduled for Saturday at Cleveland.

Astros SP Brett Oberholtzer allows two runs in Monday's win
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com

Oberholtzer threw 5 1/3 innings while striking out three and walking two, but he received a no-decision for his effort. He threw 59 of his 82 pitches for strikes.

It was just his second start this season. Oberholtzer only lasted three innings after allowing one run on five hits in his first start. His ERA now stands at 3.24. His next expected start is scheduled for Saturday at Toronto.

Marlins option P Steve Cishek to Double-A to work on mechanics
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(10:51 pm ET) The Marlins announced on Monday that they have optioned pitcher Steve Cishek to Double-A Jacksonville.

Marlins manager Dan Jennings said Cishek has some issues to work on before getting back in the majors.

"I don't think this will be a long term deal," Jennings said, via the Miami Herald. "It's about something mechanically that can be tweaked."

Cishek has appeared in 19 1/3 innings and has a 6.98 ERA. He's struggled throughout the season, having struck out only 17 batters while walking 10.

Cubs P Jason Hammel strikes out 11 in win

Hammel gave up only earned run in the outing on five hits. He didn't walk anyone through 6 2/3 innings. His 11 strikeouts were a season-high for Hammel. Hammel now has thrown 28 strikeouts over his last three games.

Hammel now has a 2.82 ERA for the season.

His next start is projected for Saturday against the Nationals.

Marlins P Jose Urena gives up 3 runs in loss
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com

Urena went six innings and struck out four batters. He gave up three walks and four hits. This was his second start of the season.

It was a better effort than the five-run, 10-hit game he had against Pittsburgh the last time he was on the mound.

Urena now has a 7.24 ERA for the season.

Cubs may use Javier Baez at designated hitter
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(9:58 pm ET) The Cubs will play interleague road games in a week. The trip to A.L. parks means that the team needs to sort through candidates to play designated hitter.

"We have some ideas and thoughts,” manager Joe Maddon said, per ESPN. “We’ll see how it plays."

The Cubs may call up a prospect to take the at bats at DH, and Javier Baez is a candidate.

Baez was the team's 2011 first-round draft pick. He's hitting .306 with five home runs and 21 RBI at Triple-A.

"Javier is doing better,” Maddon said. “I hear a lot of good things about him." Baez was a spring cut after striking out too much. He has 32 this year.

Despite hitting .327 with 12 home runs at Double-A, 2014 first-rounder Kyle Schwarber isn't going to get the call.

"I heard that (outfielder Chris Denorfia) is doing better,” Maddon said. “I’m not sure if (Tommy La Stella) would be ready by that time. But no we haven’t talked about Schwarber yet."

Despite being in pain, Castro initially remained in the game, but he had to leave with a right knee contusion, the team announced. He was hit by Ubaldo Jimenez in the fifth inning.
