Braves SS Andrelton Simmons sidelined again Monday

(3:04 pm ET) Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons missed a second straight start Monday against the Giants due to a thumb injury, which could require a stint on the disabled list. He was replaced in the starting lineup by Daniel Castro.

Since a four-hit game June 20, Simmons is batting .196 (22 for 112) in his last 34 games. He has one double, two RBI, six runs, 11 walks and 11 strikeouts in that span.


Report: Pirates A.J. Burnett has strained flexor tendon

(2:39 pm ET) Pirates starting pitcher A.J. Burnett has been diagnosed with a strained flexor tendon, according to Fox Sports. The UCL in his right elbow is also intact.

The veteran right-hander will undergo treatment in hopes of pitching again this season. He is 8-5 with a 3.06 ERA in 21 starts, but the All-Star pitcher is 1-2 with a 10.13 ERA in three starts in the second half.


Blue Jays claim RP Bruce Rowen off waivers from Cubs

Cardinals' Dan Johnson, Marcus Hatley outrighted to Triple-A

(2:28 pm ET) The Cardinals have outrighted first baseman Dan Johnson and pitcher Marcus Hatley to Triple-A Memphis. Both players were designated for assignment last week.

Rays officially promote Richie Shaffer, demote Matt Moore

(2:25 pm ET) The Rays officially demoted starting pitcher Matt Moore to Triple-A Durham on Monday. To take his spot on the roster, corner-infield prospect Richie Shaffer was promoted from Durham.

Moore, who missed the start of the season recovering from Tommy John surgery, went 1-3 with an 8.78 ERA in six starts.

Shaffer, who was a 2012 first-round pick (25th), posted a .263/.361/.539/.900 slash line between Double-A and Triple-A this season. He also had 21 doubles, 23 home runs and 59 RBI in 94 games.


Pirates option OF Jaff Decker to Triple-A Indianapolis

(2:21 pm ET) Pirates outfielder Jaff Decker was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday. He hit .077 (1 for 13) with one triple, six walks, five runs and five strikeouts in nine games following his recall in mid-July.

D-Backs CF A.J. Pollock back from two-game absence

(2:15 pm ET) Diamondbacks center fielder A.J. Pollock returned to the starting lineup Monday at Washington after sitting out two games due to a hamstring injury.

Pollock had an outstanding July offensively. He hit .340 with a .421 on-base percentage, .511 slugging percentage and .931 OPS in 24 July games. He had one triple, two home runs, eight doubles, 10 RBI, 18 runs, 13 walks, 11 strikeouts and seven stolen bases in that span.


Athletics RP Pat Venditte optioned to Triple-A

(1:56 pm ET) Switch-pitcher Pat Venditte was expected to be recalled to the Athletics after completing a rehab assignment for a shoulder injury in Triple-A Nashville, but instead Oakland optioned the reliever back to the minors for more work, per the San Francisco Chronicle

Venditte appeared in four games with the Athletics this season, but has pitched well in relief at Triple-A, compiling a 1.63 ERA. 


White Sox recall OF Trayce Thompson

(1:39 pm ET) The White Sox promoted outfielder Trayce Thompson to the majors on Monday, the team announced, and Thompson is in line to make his MLB debut when the Sox take on the Rays.

Thompson is the younger brother of NBA star Klay Thompson and was an All-Star this year at Triple-A Charlotte, where he is hitting .260 with 13 homers, 39 RBIs and 11 steals.
