Brad Hand takes tough-luck loss vs. Nationals
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(4:16 pm ET) Marlins pitcher Brad Hand could not extend his winning streak to three starts Wednesday, as the offense failed to get him much help in a 4-3 loss to the Nationals.

Hand allowed just one run through his first seven innings of work, though he had trouble in the eighth inning before he was lifted. Hand eventually allowed three runs on five hits and a pair of walks, while striking out two batters in the loss.

Hand has finished seven innings while tossing a quality start in each of his last three starts, and is 2-1 in that stretch. He is 2-3 with a 4.15 ERA overall on the season, with his next start set for Tuesday in Pittsburgh.

Tanner Roark sparkles in fourth straight win
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(4:08 pm ET) Nationals pitcher Tanner Roark picked up his 11th win of the season Wednesday, as the Nationals held on for a 4-3 win over the Marlins.

Roark twirled a gem over seven innings of work, as he allowed just a solo home run in the fourth inning. He limited the Marlins to just three hits and a pair of walks, while striking out seven batters on 112 pitches over his seven innings.

Roark is now 11-6 and riding a four-start wining streak. He lowered his ERA to 2.74 with the outing, which ranks ninth in the National League. His next start is set for Monday against the Orioles.

Nick Castellanos returns from finger issue
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(4:07 pm ET) Tigers third baseman Nick Castellanos is back in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the White Sox, after sitting out Tuesday's game with a bruised right index finger. He is batting seventh and starting at third base for the game Wednesday.

Martin Maldonado racks up three hits, four RBI in win
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(3:58 pm ET) Catcher Martin Maldonado took advantage of a rare start for the Brewers on Wednesday in Tampa Bay with his first three-hit game since May 30.

Maldonado singled in two runs in the second and added RBI hits in the sixth and eighth to play the role of offensive hero. He sweetened his stat line to .270/.357/.405 in the process.

Yovani Gallardo lights-out in win over Rays
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(3:53 pm ET) Brewers right-hander Yovani Gallardo continued to bounce back from a tough run Wednesday by blanking Tampa Bay for seven innings.

Gallardo surrendered just three hits with one walk and five strikeouts in raising his record to 6-5. He has pitched 14 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings in his last two starts after yielding 16 runs in his previous 23 1/3 innings.

He will attempt to maintain his momentum next week against visiting San Francisco.

Chris Davis sidelined again by illness
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3:52 pm ET) Orioles first baseman Chris Davis is out of the lineup for the second game in a row Wednesday against the Angels, as he continues to deal with an illness. He remains day to day as a result of this issue.

David Price not right early in loss to Brewers
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(3:47 pm ET) In what could be his final start with Tampa Bay, left-hander David Price struggled early against Milwaukee before recovering. Those struggles and no run support, however, resulted in him lowering his record to 11-8.

Price yielded three runs in the first three innings on four hits and two walks before pitching scoreless ball in the last four. He finished with seven hits allowed in seven innings with two walks and six strikeouts.

If he sticks around with the Rays, he will make his next start Tuesday in Oakland.

Eric Chavez announce retirement from baseball
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3:46 pm ET) Diamondbacks third baseman Eric Chavez, who has battled knee injuries all season, announced his retirement Thursday.

Chavez appeared in 44 games for the Diamondbacks this season and was hitting .246/.347/.449 in 69 at-bats before injuries ended the 36-year-old's career. He retires as a six-time Glove Glove award winner at third base, who posted six seasons of 25-plus home runs and finished with 260 for his career.

Chavez appeared in 100-plus games just once in his final eight seasons. He retires with a .268/.342/.475 career batting line.

David Ortiz set to sit Wednesday against lefty
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(3:37 pm ET) A matchup against Toronto left-hander Mark Buehrle has Red Sox slugger David Ortiz out of the lineup Wednesday. Mike Napoli is to serve as the designated hitter instead.

Ortiz has been on a power surge with five home runs in the last nine games.
