Austin Jackson set to lead off for Seattle

(5:11 pm ET) Lloyd McLendon has announced that newly acquired outfielder Austin Jackson will be placed in the leadoff spot for the Mariners, the Seattle Times has reported.

Jackson began this season batting lower in the lineup for Detroit, but moved back to his familiar top spot in the order in July. He is batting .327 leading off with a better on-base percentage and slugging percentage at that spot than any other.


Calf injury lands Felix Doubront on DL

(5:07 pm ET) The Cubs have placed pitcher Felix Doubront on the 15-day disabled list with a calf strain, just one day after he was acquired from the Red Sox in a trade

Doubront is expected to be stretched out as a starter for the Cubs, after the Red Sox moved him to the bullpen. He has a 6.07 ERA in 59 1/3 innings, and could go out on a minor-league rehab assignment to stretch out. 


Marwin Gonzalez still sidelined by troublesome hamstring

(5:07 pm ET) Astros pitcher Marwin Gonzalez was out of the lineup for the second game in a row Thursday against the Blue Jays, as a result of lingering tightness in his hamstring. This injury has followed Gonzalez over the last week, and he remains day to day moving forward. 

Cliff Lee remains with Phillies past non-waiver deadline

(5:06 pm ET) The Phillies were unable to trade veteran starting pitcher Cliff Lee by Thursday's non-waiver trade deadline. Lee is 0-1 with a 7.59 ERA in two starts since returning from the disabled list.

Padres do not trade Joaquin Benoit by Thursday's deadline

Trade no impetus for Javier Baez promotion

(5:02 pm ET) The deal that shipped starting second baseman Emilio Bonifacio from the Cubs to Atlanta will not result in the promotion of prized prospect Javier Baez from Triple-A Iowa, according to ESPN.

Baez had been productive at that level. He owns a stat line of .255/.313/.491 with 20 home runs and 76 RBI in 393 at-bats. He has four home runs in his last nine games.


Chris Carter returns from illness Thursday

(5:01 pm ET) Astros designated hitter Chris Carter is back in the lineup Thursday against the Blue Jays, afterhe was forced out Wednesday due to an illness.

Carter is in his usual spot, batting third and serving as the DH after his one-day absence. 


Eugenio Suarez's back still an issue Thursday

(4:59 pm ET) Tigers shortstop Eugenio Suarez was out of the lineup yet again Thursday against the White Sox, due to back stiffness. Suarez has not played since leaving Tuesday's game, and is considered day to day at this point.  

Josh Rutledge healthy enough to play Thursday

(4:57 pm ET) Rockies infielder Josh Rutledge was out of the lineup for the fourth straight game Thursday against the Cubs due to an illness, but was feeling well enough to come into the game as a defensive replacement.

Rutledge entered the game in a double switch during the seventh inning, playing shortstop and hitting ninth in one plate appearance. He should be healthy enough to play moving forward. 


Robert Refsnyder could be option to start at 2B in 2015

(4:55 pm ET) With the Yankees acquisition of Martin Prado, general manager Brian Cashman told reporters Thursday prospect Robert Refsnyder will move from right field back to second base at Triple-A. Cashman added Refnsyder could be an option to start at second base in 2015.

Refsnyder is having a big year in the minors, batting .323 with a .394 on-base percentage, .525 slugging percentage and .919 OPS in 106 games between Double-A and Triple-A.
