Marlins' Dee Gordon lights it up in loss to Pirates
by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer
(3:57 pm ET) Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon's bat is on fire, and it didn't cool down on Wednesday.

Gordon hit 3 for 4 in his team's 5-2 loss, but continued what is now a six-game hitting streak.

In his last six games, Gordon has nine hits and seven stolen bases in 28 at-bats.

Rockies closer John Axford a perfect 8 for 8 in save chances
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:56 pm ET) Rockies closer John Axford tossed a perfect ninth inning Wednesday against the Reds for his eighth save during a 6-4 win.

Axford opened the inning by getting Tucker Barnhart to fly out to right field. He then struck out Brandon Phillips before getting Billy Hamilton to ground out to end the game.

The veteran right-hander has not allowed a run in his last seven innings. He's given up just two runs and three walks in that span. Axford is a perfect 8 for 8 in save opportunities.

Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia blasts two home runs on Wednesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(3:55 pm ET) Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia did his best to get his team a win, but it was not enough as the Twins won 6-4, completing the three-game sweep.

Pedroia belted two, two-run home runs off starter Phil Hughes, giving him seven longballs on the season. The home runs were his only hits on the afternoon, as he extended his current hitting streak to seven games.

During the streak, Pedroia's batting average has risen from .270 to its current .290 clip.

Marlins 1B Justin Bour slams third home run of the season in loss
by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer
(3:53 pm ET) Marlins first baseman Justin Bour hit his third home run of the season in the second inning of his team's 5-2 loss to the Pirates on Wednesday.

Bour hit 2 for 4 with the long-ball, an RBI and a run scored.

Twins SP Phil Hughes battles for fourth win on Wednesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(3:51 pm ET) Twins starter Phil Hughes picked up a victory in the team's 6-4 win over the Red Sox on Wednesday. Hughes wasn't stellar, but received enough run support from his offense to still walk away victorious.

Hughes (4-4) went 6 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits. He struck out three and walked two as the Twins swept the Red Sox. All of the runs he gave up were a result of two, two-run home runs to Dustin Pedroia.

Hughes' ERA rose a tick to 4.59, and he'll get a re-match with the Red Sox on Tuesday in Boston.

Pirates SS Jung Ho Kang has big day in win over Marlins
by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer
(3:49 pm ET) Pirates shortstop Jung Ho Kang hit 1 for 4 with two crucial RBI in his team's 5-2 win over the Marlins on Wednesday.

Kang singled to center in the seventh inning, bringing Andrew McCutchen and Pedro Alvarez around to score. His two RBI served as insurance runs for the Pirates who scored all five of their runs in the seventh inning.

Kang now has 14 RBI in 99 at-bats this season.

Red Sox SP Rick Porcello gets knocked around on Wednesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(3:47 pm ET) Red Sox starter Rick Porcello struggled again in Wednesday's loss to the Twins. The right-hander went seven innings, allowing six runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out two, giving up runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings.

Porcello (4-4) gave up two-run home run to Aaron Hicks in the fourth and a solo shot to Eddie Rosario in the sixth. Over his last two starts, Porcello has surrendered 13 runs on 14 hits and his ERA now sits at 5.37.

He'll look to get back on track in his next start, scheduled for Monday against these same Twins.

Rays pitcher Brad Boxberger tagged for three runs in loss
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(3:44 pm ET) Rays relief pitcher Brad Boxberger struggled in his only inning of work on Wednesday in Tampa Bay's 3-0 loss to the Mariners. Boxberger came on in the ninth with the game tied 0-0.

Boxberger struggled to find the zone and walked two straight batters after striking out the first two batters of the inning. Then, Boxberger served up a fat one over the middle for Nelson Cruz, who blasted a 3-0 home run over the right center field wall.

Boxberger, now 2-3, moved his ERA to 2.95 in 18 1/3 innings of work.

Marlins SP Brad Hand tosses five scoreless in no decision
by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer
(3:40 pm ET) Marlins starting pitcher Brad Hand handled the Pirates for five innings. He held them to just four hits and no runs before coming out of the game with a 2-0 lead.

Hand (0-1) threw just 74 pitches and struck out two batters before being yanked out of the game.

The Marlins bullpen blew another late-game lead when Mike Dunn and Sam Dyson combined to allow five earned runs in the seventh inning, giving Hand a no-decision.

Rockies SP Kyle Kendrick gets first win since Opening Day
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:40 pm ET) Rockies starting pitcher Kyle Kendrick ended a long winless drought Wednesday against the Reds, winning for the first time since Opening Day. The right-hander allowed four runs on five hits and one walk, while striking out one in 7 1/3 innings during a 6-4 win.

Kendrick (2-6) took the mound in the bottom of the first inning with a three-run lead. He gave up a two-out solo home run to Todd Frazier in the first inning, but he didn't allow another run until the eighth.

Tucker Barnhart led off the eighth with a home run. Kendrick then recorded a pop out before allowing a single to Billy Hamilton and a walk to Skip Schumaker. He was then lifted from the game. Both Hamilton and Schumaker would score, charging all three runs in the inning to Kendrick.

The right-hander will look to keep the momentum going in his next start Tuesday against the Dodgers.
