Rays 1B James Loney smacks solo home run in Game 1 of DH

(6:17 pm ET) In his fourth game back from the disabled list, Rays first baseman James Loney launched a solo home run in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Royals. Loney missed six weeks due to a fractured finger.

The home run, his third of the year, came in the second inning to give the Rays an early 2-0 lead, though they would lose the game 9-5 in walk-off fashion. Loney also hit a double in the game, and is 6 for 18 since returning from the DL. 


Brandon Guyer replaces Steven Souza in Rays lineup

(6:16 pm ET) Steven Souza isn't in the lineup for the second game of the Rays' doubleheader against Kansas City on Tuesday. 

Souza has started 74 games in right field. He'll sit for the third time in the last five games, however. 

Brandon Guyer will replace Souza in right, starting for the eighth time. 


Mets reinstate Jenrry Mejia from Restricted List; option Logan Verrett

(6:16 pm ET) The Mets have reinstated pitcher Jenrry Mejia from the Restricted List on Tuesday, the team announced.

Mejia will be available to pitch in Tuesday's contest at San Francisco. He served an 80-game suspension for using performance-enhancing drugs.

To make room for Mejia, the team optioned pitcher Logan Verrett to Triple-A. Verrett went 0-1 with a 2.95 ERA over 21 1/3 innings.


Pirates C Francisco Cervelli scratched from Tuesday's lineup

(6:14 pm ET) Pirates catcher Francisco Cervelli has been scratched from Tuesday's lineup against the Padres. The Pirates did not provide a reason for his removal from the lineup.

Chris Stewart entered the lineup behind the plate while batting eighth. 


John Jaso returns to Rays' lineup at DH

(6:13 pm ET) John Jaso will return to the Rays' lineup in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader. 

Jaso has been out since Opening Day with a wrist contusion. He completed a minor league rehab assignment on Monday and was activated from the 60-day disabled list on Tuesday. 

Jaso is playing designated hitter and batting leadoff. His return moves Grady Sizemore to left field. Sizemore has started six games at DH since joining the team. 


Royals' Paulo Orlando slams walk-off in Game 1 of DH Tuesday

(6:11 pm ET) Royals outfielder Paulo Orlando was the offensive hero in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Rays. Orlando came to bat in the bottom of the ninth winning, with the bases loaded and the score tied 4-4. 

Orlando promptly unloaded the bases with the walk-off grand slam, giving the Royals the 9-5 victory. It was the first career walk-off hit of any kind for Orlando, who had just been called up from Triple-A prior to the game. It was his second home run of the season.


Royals' Greg Holland blows save, gets win in Game 1 of DH Tuesday

(6:06 pm ET) Royals closer Greg Holland blew his second save of the season in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Rays. But he was able to secure his third win of the season in the 9-5 walk-off victory.

Holland (3-0) entered the game with the Royals up 5-4, but he allowed a lead-off triple to Kevin Kiermaier, who later scored on a wild pitch. Holland was able to finish the inning without any further damage being done.

Holland's ERA rose from 2.23 to 3.00 after this outing. It was his first blown save in nearly two months, as he had gone 16 outings between blown saves. 


Cardinals' Matt Holliday conducts running drills Tuesday

(6:04 pm ET) Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday was able to do some running drills Tuesday, reports MLB.com.

Holliday has been sidelined since June 8 with a quad injury and he was recently dealing with an illness.


Royals SP Chris Young strikes out five in no-decision Tuesday

(6:00 pm ET) Royals right-hander Chris Young allowed four runs on five hits over six innings in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Royals. Young walked one and struck out five, as he took a no-decision in the 9-5 walk-off victory.

Young gave up a solo home run to James Loney in the second inning to open the scoring. Then Evan Longoria launched a two-run shot as part of a three-run fourth inning. Young left the game with the score tied 4-4.

Young's ERA rose to 2.89 with this performance. Tuesday was just the third time in has last seven starts that he has allowed more than one earned run.


Tigers DFA Josh Wilson on Tuesday

(6:00 pm ET) The Tigers designated infielder Josh Wilson for assignment on Tuesday, the team announced.

The move was made to make room for Marc Krauss. Wilson hit .381 in 21 at-bats this season.
