Erik Bedard ready to start Sunday -- just in case
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5:17 pm ET) David Price is hoping to start for the Rays Sunday despite an illness, but the team has a backup plan just in case, according to MLB.com.

If Price has to be scratched for the second day in a row, the Rays have Erik Bedard ready to step in and start in his place. Bedard last pitched July 3, when he lasted just two innings and threw 53 pitches in a start against the Tigers. He was moved to the bullpen following that start.

Mark Lowe accepts outright assignment to Triple-A
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5:07 pm ET) Indians reliever Mark Lowe has accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Columbus on Saturday, MLB.com reports. The right-hander was designated for assignment earlier in the week.

Michael Pineda throws first bullpen session
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5:07 pm ET) Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda tossed a bullpen session without issue Friday, according to MLB.com.

Pineda, working his way back from shoulder inflammation, tossed 25 pitches in the bullpen and reported no issues. He will continue moving forward in his recovery, though the next step is not yet known.

Carlos Ruiz nears rehab assignment
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5:05 pm ET) Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz will join high Class A Clearwater Sunday to take part in baseball activities for a few days, MLB.com reports.

Ruiz is expected to begin rehab games later in the week if all goes well, likely on Friday. He has been out since late June while recovering from concussion symptoms. Ruiz has hit .257/.363/.357 with two home runs and 14 RBI in 230 at-bats.

Justin Masterson completes another light 'pen session
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5:05 pm ET) Indians starting pitcher Justin Masterson completed another light bullpen session Friday, as he continues to work his way back from a knee injury, MLB.com reports. Masterson was limited exclusively to his two-seam and four-seam fastballs during the session. He remains hopeful of returning at some point after the All-Star break, though the team has not given any specific timetable for return.

Indians hope Jason Giambi will play again this season
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5:02 pm ET) Indians designated hitter Jason Giambi remains without a timetable, but manager Terry Francona believes he'll be able to play again this season, MLB.com reports. Giambi has been sidelined since June 11 due to knee inflammation.

"We've actually talked to G, probably will again," Francona said. "It's a situation we knew when we signed G. Fortunately, he gets it. Not all players do. He always knows that the team comes first."

Brett Marshall outrighted to Triple-A
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4:56 pm ET) The Reds sent pitcher Brett Marshall outright to Triple-A Louisville Saturday.

Marshall, who was designated for assignment Thursday, suffered a finger injury during the preseason. He is 0-5 with a 10.97 ERA and 14:27 K:BB ratio in 21 1/3 innings over seven starts with Louisville.

Scott Carroll leaves with back injury
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(4:56 pm ET) White Sox pitcher Scott Carroll tossed five scoreless innings Saturday against the Indians, but had to leave the start due to lower back stiffness.

Carroll finished five innings without trouble, allowing just two hits and no walks while allowing no runs. He struck out three batters and threw 43 of 78 pitches for strikes, but did not come out for the sixth inning, with the team announcing he has lower back stiffness.

Carroll left with a 3-0 lead and will get the win if the bullpen can hold on to it, which would improve his record to 4-5. He lowered his ERA to 4.19 and has the All-Star break with which to heal before he has to make his next start.

Matt Daley designated for assignment Saturday
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(4:43 pm ET) Yankees pitcher Matt Daley was designated for assignment Saturday, in order to clear room on the 40-man roster for Jeff Francis, The Star-Ledger reports.

Daley appeared in 12 games for the Yankees this season, posting a 4.85 ERA in 13 innings of work.

Chase Whitley expected to start Sunday
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(4:39 pm ET) Yankees pitcher Chase Whitley is expected to start in Masahiro Tanaka's place Sunday, assuming he isn't used in relief Saturday, according to MASNSports.com.

Whitley was pushed out of the rotation last week, but ended up making just one appearance in relief, Wednesday, when he tossed two scoreless innings.
