Pat Neshek takes loss vs. Cubs Tuesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11:24 pm ET) Cardinals pitcher Pat Neshek was stuck with a loss Tuesday, giving up one earned run on two hits and one walk in 1 2/3 innings while striking out three in his team's 4-3 walkoff defeat against the Cubs.

Neshek (7-2) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning but gave up a one-out double in the 10th, with the runner advancing to third base on a groundout. After an intentional walk, the reliever surrendered a single to bring home the game-ending run. Neshek owns a 1.49 ERA, 0.72 WHIP and 68:9 K:BB ratio in 66 1/3 innings.

Zac Rosscup earns win Tuesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11:21 pm ET) Cubs pitcher Zac Rosscup picked up a win Tuesday, striking out two in a 1-2-3 10th inning in his team's 4-3 victory over the Cardinals.

Rosscup (1-0) has had his ups and downs with the Cubs, but he's managed 10 strikeouts in just 4 2/3 innings over his last six appearances while allowing one earned run. Despite his strong pitching of late, he owns a 9.45 ERA and 21:12 K:BB ratio in 13 1/3 innings.

Kyle Hendricks allows three runs in no-decision Tuesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11:18 pm ET) Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks wasn't a factor in Tuesday's decision, surrendering three earned runs on five hits and one walk in 5 1/3 innings while striking out four in his team's 4-3 win over the Cardinals.

Hendricks spun five scoreless innings before getting into trouble in the sixth, giving up a run on a groundout and two more on a game-tying home run. That home run was his first allowed in six starts and just his second surrendered since the beginning of August. Hendricks owns a 2.46 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 47:15 K:BB ratio in 80 1/3 innings. He's scheduled to face the Brewers in Sunday's season finale.

Shelby Miller strikes out eight in no-decision vs. Cubs
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11:18 pm ET) Cardinals pitcher Shelby Miller didn't factor into the decision Tuesday, giving up three earned runs on five hits and two walks in just 4 1/3 innings while striking out eight in his team's 4-3 loss to the Cubs.

Miller served up a two-run home run in the second inning and a solo shot in the fifth to fall behind 3-0, but the Cardinals offense was able to pull even in the sixth inning and prevent the starter from taking a loss. He owns a 3.74 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 127:73 K:BB ratio in 183 innings. Miller's not scheduled for another start.

Kyle Gibson strikes out eight in win vs. Diamondbacks
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11:17 pm ET) Twins pitcher Kyle Gibson earned a win Tuesday, giving up just one earned run on seven hits in seven innings and striking out eight in his team's 6-3 victory over the Diamondbacks.

Gibson (13-11) was handed a 3-0 lead after two innings and protected it by surrendering just an RBI single in the fourth. It's his first quality start sinc Aug. 13 and the first time he didn't walk a batter since Aug. 3. Gibson owns a 4.50 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 101:54 K:BB ratio in 172 innings. He's scheduled to face the Tigers in the season finale Sunday.

Andrew Chafin gives up four runs in loss vs. Twins
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11:16 pm ET) Diamondbacks pitcher Andrew Chafin took a loss Tuesday, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and two walks in three-plus innings while striking out five in his team's 6-3 defeat against the Twins.

Chafin (0-1) did well in his first two starts before struggling Tuesday, giving up three runs in a second inning that was only ended by a hitter trying to stretch a single into a double. He then opened the fourth with a double and a single before being removed. Chafin owns a 3.86 ERA and 10:8 K:BB ratio in 14 innings. He isn't scheduled for another start.

Neal Cotts allows run in second save Tuesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11:09 pm ET) Rangers pitcher Neal Cotts picked up his second save Tuesday despite allowing one earned run on one hit and one walk in one inning while striking out one in his team's 2-1 victory over the Astros.

Cotts needed 25 pitches but was able to hang on for a save, though the Astros brought home a run with a sacrifice fly. He owns a 4.18 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 63:23 K:BB ratio in 64 2/3 innings.

Nick Martinez strikes out five in win vs. Astros
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11:06 pm ET) Rangers pitcher Nick Martinez earned a win Tuesday, giving up just five hits in 6 2/3 scoreless innings while striking out five and walking none in his team's 2-1 victory over the Astros.

Martinez (5-11) may have an ugly record, but he's delivered five straight starts of two earned runs or less. Tuesday's five-strikeout game was his highest mark during that stretch, however. Martinez owns a 4.61 ERA and 75:55 K:BB ratio in 134 2/3 innings. He's scheduled to face the A's Sunday in the season finale.

Brett Oberholtzer chased in fifth inning of loss vs. Rangers
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11:06 pm ET) Astros pitcher Brett Oberholtzer took a loss Tuesday, allowing two earned runs on nine hits and three walks in just 4 1/3 innings while striking out three in his team's 2-1 defeat against the Rangers.

Oberholtzer (5-13) gave up both runs in the fourth inning, serving up a solo home run to lead off the inning and watching a run come home on a RBI single before a double play with two men on ended the inning. He's taken three straight losses and now owns a 4.39 ERA and 94:28 K:BB ratio in 143 2/3 innings. Oberholtzer is not scheduled to make another start.

Matt Shoemaker, Josh Hamilton make progress Tuesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11:05 pm ET) Angels pitcher Matt Shoemaker and outfielder Josh Hamilton made progress Tuesday as both work towards potentially being available for the postseason, MLB.com reports.

Shoemaker is now "symptom-free," according to manager Mike Scioscia, and he played catch for a second straight day Tuesday. He won't pitch again in the regular season but may be able to pitch off a mound early next week.

Hamilton has played just once in the last 19 days due to pain in his right AC joint. He took swings Tuesday for the second straight day and is hopeful he can return by Friday's opener against the Mariners in the final regular-season series of the year.
