Joe Mauer still limited while swinging
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5:46 pm ET) Twins catcher Joe Mauer told the St. Paul Pioneer Press Tuesday he is encouraged by how his oblique injury has responded to fielding work, but still has some work to do before he is in game shape.

Mauer has been taking dry swings while working out before games, but has yet to even try to swing at half speed. He has been out since July 1 as a result of this injury, and remains without a concrete timetable until he can swing at full speed.

Ian Stewart clears waivers, heads to Triple-A
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5:39 pm ET) Angels third baseman Ian Stewart cleared waivers and accepted an assignment to Triple-A Salt Lake, the team announced Tuesday.

Stewart lost his 40-man roster spot upon the acquisition of Huston Street. He has hit .176/.222/.382 with two home runs and seven RBI in 68 at-bats.

J.P. Arencibia not an option behind the plate
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5:38 pm ET) Even with catcher Geovany Soto going on the disabled list again, Rangers manager Ron Washington told the Dallas Morning News he does not plan to play J.P. Arencibia behind the plate.

Arencibia has appeared in three games since joining the team after the All-Star break, all at first base. Washington wants Arencibia to focus on his defense at first base, and does not expect him to be an option at catcher at any point this season.

Matt Lindstrom completes bullpen session Tuesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5:36 pm ET) White Sox pitcher Matt Lindstrom completed another bullpen session Tuesday, the team announced.

Lindstrom is on track to move forward to throwing live batting practice while the team is in Minnesota this weekend. If all goes well, he could end up beginning a rehab assignment at some point next week. He has been sidelined since May 19 while recovering from ankle surgery.

Jose Abreu gets night off with sore back
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5:24 pm ET) White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu is getting the day off Tuesday against the Royals, due to minor soreness in his back, manager Robin Ventura told reporters.

Abreu is available to pinch-hit off the bench Tuesday, and is expected back in the lineup in time for Wednesday's game. This is the first game Abreu has missed since he returned from the disabled list in early June.

Jason Vargas unlikely to return Sunday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5:23 pm ET) Royals manager Ned Yost said Tuesday that it's "unlikely" pitcher Jason Vargas will return from the disabled list Sunday, the Kansas City Star reports.

Vargas has been out since July 8 while recovering from an appendectomy, but it was believed he may be ready to return Sunday after completing a 20-pitch bullpen session yesterday. However, it looks like he'll be sidelined for a little while longer. Vargas is 8-4 with a 3.31 ERA and 82:29 K:BB ratio in 125 innings.

Jordan Zimmermann ready to go Tuesday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(5:19 pm ET) As expected, Nationals pitcher Jordan Zimmermann is in the team's starting lineup Tuesday against the Rockies.

Zimmermann was considered probable heading into the start due to a biceps issue. He was able to get through a weekend bullpen session, and was cleared for his start shortly after that outing. Zimmermann has a 3.03 ERA over 113 innings.

Dodgers considering change to outfield alignment
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5:18 pm ET) Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said outfielder Matt Kemp has looked comfortable playing in right field that he's thinking about moving Yasiel Puig to center field. Puig was sidelined a third straight game Tuesday due to a hand injury.

Tyler Flowers out of lineup Tuesday for personal reasons
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5:18 pm ET) White Sox catcher Tyler Flowers is not in the starting lineup Tuesday against the Royals, though it isn't because he is hurt.

Flowers' wife gave birth Monday, according to ESPN.com, so he was spending the day with her. He is expected to be at the ballpark in time for the game, and will likely be available off the bench.

Erick Aybar returns as expected Tuesday
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5:16 pm ET) As expected, Erick Aybar is back in the starting lineup Tuesday against the Orioles, after recovering from a groin strain.

Aybar missed three games in a row as a result of the injury, but was available off the bench Monday and was expected to return Tuesday. He has a 10-game hitting streak active heading into Thursday's action.
