Nationals' Span happy with progress in recovery from core muscle surgery
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(12:31 pm ET) Nationals outfielder Denard Span has been able to run sprints in the outfield, swing a lighter bat than he is used to and throw from as far as 200 feet over the last week, according to The Washington Post. Span is recovering from core muscle surgery March 9.

“The last three days were really good,” Span said on Sunday. “Overall, it’s been feeling a lot better than I anticipated or a lot of people anticipated feeling this soon.”

Span is expected to stay back in Florida for extended spring training when camp ends. He doesn't have a timetable for his return, but estimates are he will be back in early-to-mid-May.

“Mentally, I’m a lot better than I was before surgery and a little bit after surgery, just knowing that I’m getting better each day and inching closer to getting back to re-joining the ball club and doing what I love to do,” he said. “It’s been a tough six months for me. I’ve been dealing this since the season ended last year. The last few days, just to be out here sprinting and doing things that I normally do has been very easing to my mind.”

Report: Mets likely to keep Muno over Reynolds, if Murphy goes on DL
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(12:15 pm ET) If Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy begins the season on the disabled list due to a hamstring injury, the team is more likely to choose Danny Muno over prospect Matt Reynolds to replace him on the roster, a team source told ESPN.

If Murphy is out, the Mets prefer to have Muno and Ruben Tejada play at second base, with Reynolds being sent to Triple-A to start at shortstop.

One of the reasons the Mets are considering sending Reynolds to the minors is because the team doesn't want to avoid a dilemma in case Reynolds thrives in Murphy's absence and manager Terry Collins wants to keep him around as a bench option. They do not want to start his MLB service time for a backup role.

Report: Phillies' Pettibone scheduled to throw live BP Tuesday
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(12:03 pm ET) Phillies pitcher Jonathan Pettibone is scheduled to throw live batting practice Tuesday for the first time since undergoing shoulder surgery in June, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. Pettibone, who will continue to rehab in extended spring training, has thrown 10 bullpens this spring.

Pettibone is expected to throw a few live BP sessions before throwing in an extended spring game. He will likely join the rotation at Triple-A Lehigh Valley before getting a chance to join the major-league roster.

Phillies' Amaro: Darin Ruf is not a lock to make roster
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11:59 am ET) Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Monday outfielder Darin Ruf is not a lock to make the Opening Day roster, per The News Journal. Amaro added sending Ruf to Triple-A to play every day is not ideal, but it is possible.

Ruf is batting .220 (11 for 50) with two doubles, two home runs, two RBI, two walks, five runs and 11 strikeouts in 18 spring games.

Tigers' Bruce Rondon (neck) held out again Monday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11:59 am ET) Tigers pitcher Bruce Rondon will not pitch Monday as he continues to deal with a neck issue, FOXSportsDetroit.com reports.

Rondon is returning from Tommy John surgery but has been limited recently due to a neck injury. He has allowed four earned runs in 6 1/3 innings.

Orioles reassign C J.P. Arencibia to minor-league camp
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11:53 am ET) The Orioles have reassigned catcher J.P. Arencibia to minor-league camp, the team announced Monday.

Arencibia received a cortisone shot in his right forearm and is expected to be re-evaluated Wednesday. He's played just once since March 17 and was 2 for 17 this spring before being reassigned.

Phillies' Amaro: Domonic Brown likely to open season on DL
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11:52 am ET) Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Monday outfielder Domonic Brown is likely to open the season on the disabled list, per MLB.com. Brown has been sidelined since leaving a March 19 spring game due to Achillies tendinitis.

With Brown sidelined, Amaro said the top candidates to replace him in right field are Brian Bogusevic, Jordan Danks, Jeff Francoeur and Russ Canzler. Odubel Herrera is expected to start in center field and Ben Revere in left field for Philadelphia.

Rangers send Tanner Scheppers (ankle) for MRI
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11:50 am ET) Rangers pitcher Tanner Scheppers is set to undergo an MRI on his right ankle due to continued soreness, the Dallas Morning News reports.

Scheppers got a late start to his spring due to the sprained ankle before making his debut with a scoreless inning on March 21. He has since allowed eight runs (five earned) in 2 2/3 innings. Scheppers is expected to pitch out of the bullpen when healthy.

Reds' Mesoraco gets a day off Monday due to a sore hamstring
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11:47 am ET) Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco said Monday he was held out of the spring lineup because his hamstring was a little sore, per the Cincinnati Enquirer. Although, Mesoraco said he would have played if it were the regular season.

"I think it's going to fine," he said.

Mesoraco left Sunday's spring game with a cramp in his left quad.

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11:46 am ET) The Rangers optioned Nick Tepesch to Triple-A Round Rock Monday.
