Jonathan Papelbon earns second Nationals' save
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(11:24 pm ET) Newly-acquired closer Jonathan Papelbon recorded his second save for the Nationals and 19th save of the year, Tuesday against Arizona.

Papelbon remained perfect in save opportunities this year. He allowed an unearned run, the second time in three Nationals' appearances he's been scored upon.

For the first time in the last seven appearances, Papelbon didn't strike out a batter.

White Sox SP Chris Sale endures another rough outing Tuesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(11:21 pm ET) White Sox starter Chris Sale struggled again in his outing against the Rays on Tuesday. The 2015 All-Star allowed seven runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out nine, but suffered his seventh loss of the season in the 12-3 defeat.

Sale (9-7) got off to a bad start in this one, as he allowed a two-run home run to Logan Forsythe in the top of the first inning. He settled in after that, retiring 10 of the next 11 batters to face him.

But he served up a solo shot to Mikie Mahtook in the fifth, before giving up four more in a five-run sixth inning.

This makes back-to-back starts in which Sale has allowed seven runs. The two rough outings have lifted his season ERA to a rather pedestrian 3.52 clip.

Arizona was able to rally, after Corbin left the game, allowing him to escape with a no-decision.

Corbin has now allowed six home runs in his six starts.

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Wood ran into problems in the third when he allowed an RBI double to Odubel Herrera. Wood then loaded the bases in the seventh before getting pulled for Joel Peralta. He then allowed a grand slam to Maikel Franco, plating three runs against Wood.

Wood, now 7-7, moved his ERA to 3.65 in 125 2/3 innings of work this season. He will look to bounce back Sunday against the Pirates.

Happ was acquired from Seattle in a trade-deadline deal. He allowed four runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings. He's lasted a total of 9 1/3 innings in his last three starts, allowing 13 earned runs over that span.

Phillies reliever Ken Giles earns four-out save on Tuesday
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(11:06 pm ET) Phillies relief pitcher Ken Giles had a nearly perfect outing on Tuesday, getting the final four outs of Philadelphia's 6-2 win over the Dodgers, earning his third save of the year.

Giles came on in the eighth with runners on second and third and managed to get Jimmy Rollins to strikeout. Then in the ninth, Giles allowed a leadoff walk before getting two of the final three batters to strikeout to end the game. Giles lowered his ERA to 1.72 in 47 innings of work.

Jake Arrieta wins 12th for Cubs
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(11:03 pm ET) Cubs starter Jake Arrieta improved to 12-6 with a win over Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

Arrieta has won six of his last seven decisions, dating back to June 21. For the second time in four starts, he threw seven shutout innings. For the second time in five starts, he allowed just two hits.

Phillies pitcher Jerome Williams strikes out six in no decision
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(11:01 pm ET) Phillies pitcher Jerome Williams allowed one run on seven hits in five innings of work in Philadelphia's 6-2 win, but did not factor into a decision.

Williams, who struck out six and walked three, ran into problems in the fifth when he put runners on first and third with one out. Andre Ethier then singled to right to score a run. Williams managed to get out of the inning without allowing anymore damage.

Williams, who remains 3-8, will look to pick up another victory Saturday against the Brewers.
