Phillies 1B Ryan Howard not in Tuesday's lineup

(6:48 pm ET) Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard was held out of Tuesday's lineup at the Los Angeles Dodgers, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Howard was replaced at first by Darin Ruf, who will bat fourth. Over his last 15 games, Howard is hitting .143 with one home run and eight RBI.

The Phillies are the underdogs (-300) at Los Angeles on Tuesday.


Blue Jays' Aaron Sanchez starts rehab stint in Gulf Coast League

(6:39 pm ET) Blue Jays pitcher Aaron Sanchez began a minor league rehab assignment in the Gulf Coast League with the GCL Blue Jays on Tuesday. 

Sanchez has been out with June 5 with a strained lat muscle. 

He pitched two innings, allowing two runs on three hits. Sanchez walked a batter and struck out a batter.


Rays RP Brad Boxberger gives up walk-off grand slam

(6:32 pm ET) Rays reliever Brad Boxberger surrendered the game-winning, walk-off hit to the Royals in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader. Boxberger gave up a ninth-inning grand slam to Paulo Orlando, giving the Royals the 9-5 win. Boxberger took his fifth loss of the season.

Boxberger, who was just named to his first All-Star game on Monday, allowed three hits and a walk in this outing, as his ERA rose from 2.48 to 3.55.


Yankees promote pitcher Nick Goody to Triple-A

(6:29 pm ET) The Yankees promoted pitcher Nick Goody from Double-A to Triple-A on Tuesday, reports The Star Ledger. Goody has a 1.73 ERA over 41 2/3 innings at Double-A.

Royals LF Alex Gordon hits solo home run in Game 1 of DH

(6:28 pm ET) Royals left fielder Alex Gordon had a three-hit afternoon in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Rays. Gordon went 3 for 4 with two RBI, including a solo home run. The longball was Gordon's 11th of the year and second in as many games. 

The fourth-inning blast tied the game at 4-4, as the Royals would go on to win 9-5 in walk-off fashion. 


Giants RP Jeremy Affeldt throws bullpen session on Tuesday

(6:25 pm ET) Giants left-handed reliever Jeremy Affeldt, on the disabled list with a shoulder strain, threw a bullpen session on Tuesday, according to CSN Bay Area. It's the first time Affeldt has taken to a mound since landing on the DL on June 26. 

There is still no clear timetable for the lefty's return to the Giants bullpen.


Athletics' Coco Crisp recovered from kidney stones

(6:24 pm ET) Athletics' outfielder Coco Crisp is no longer suffering from kidney stones, manager Bob Melvin said on Tuesday, per the San Francisco Chronicle.

The stones had left Crisp semi-bedridden in late June and interrupted his recovery from the neck injury that landed him on the 60-day disabled list. 

Crisp hasn't played since May 19.


Rays 3B Evan Longoria belts two-run home run in Game 1 of DH

(6:22 pm ET) Rays third baseman Evan Longoria chipped in a two-run home run in the 9-5 loss to the Royals in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader. Longoria's home run, his ninth of the year, was his only hit of the game. It came in the fourth inning to temporarily tie the game at 3-3. 

Longoria is 11 for 40 with two home runs over his last 10 games. 


Rays 1B James Loney smacks solo home run in Game 1 of DH

(6:17 pm ET) In his fourth game back from the disabled list, Rays first baseman James Loney launched a solo home run in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Royals. Loney missed six weeks due to a fractured finger.

The home run, his third of the year, came in the second inning to give the Rays an early 2-0 lead, though they would lose the game 9-5 in walk-off fashion. Loney also hit a double in the game, and is 6 for 18 since returning from the DL. 


Brandon Guyer replaces Steven Souza in Rays lineup

(6:16 pm ET) Steven Souza isn't in the lineup for the second game of the Rays' doubleheader against Kansas City on Tuesday. 

Souza has started 74 games in right field. He'll sit for the third time in the last five games, however. 

Brandon Guyer will replace Souza in right, starting for the eighth time.
