Carlos Contreras allows two runs, leaves with apparent injury

(12:35 am ET) Reds pitcher Carlos Contreras was removed from Wednesday's game against the Cardinals with an apparent injury.

Contreras allowed two earned runs on two hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning, but appeared to misstep on a pitch and was taken out. Manager Mike Matheny didn't give an update on the pitcher's status after the game.


Stephen Drew belts a home run

(12:29 am ET) Yankees shortstop Stephen Drew belted his fifth home run Wedneday against the Astros. 

Drew struck in the fourth inning. With the bases empty, Drew took an 86 mph cutter out to right center for the solo shot. He also walked during the contest. Drew finished 1 for 3, with one run scored and one RBI.


Brennan Boesch optioned to Triple-A

(12:26 am ET) The Angels have optioned outfielder Brennan Boesch to Triple-A Wednesday.

Boesch was sent down so that the team could add a pitcher. With Garrett Richards expected to miss time, the club could promote a replacement. Boesch hit .129 over 31 at-bats.


Victor Martinez belts grand slam

(12:13 am ET) Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez blasted a grand slam Wednesday against the Rays.

Martinez stepped to the plate with the bases loaded in the seventh inning. He worked a five-pitch at-bat, homering on a 92 mph fastball. Martinez also doubled in a run during the contest. He finished 2 for 3, with one run scored and five RBI. 


Adam Jones goes deep Wednesday

(12:10 am ET) Orioles outfielder Adam Jones hit his 24th home run Wednesday against the White Sox. 

Jones led off the sixth inning with a solo shot off Hector Noesi. He took a 94 mph fastball out to right for the shot. Jones also singled twice during the contest. He finished 3 for 4, with two runs scored and one RBI. 


Nelson Cruz reclaims home run lead

(12:06 am ET) Orioles outfielder Nelson Cruz reclaimed the home run lead Wednesday against the White Sox.

Cruz went yard in the top of the fourth inning. With one man on base, Cruz belted a 93 mph fastball from Hector Noesi out to left for a two-run shot. He finished 1 for 4, with one run scored and two RBI. 


Avisail Garcia hits third home run Wednesday

(12:03 am ET) White Sox outfielder Avisail Garcia hit his third home run Wednesday against the Orioles.

Garcia struck in the first inning. With one man on, Garcia belted an 84 mph changeup out to left for a two-run shot. Garcia finished 1 for 3, with one run scored and three RBI. It was Garcia's first home run since April 8. 


Alex Gordon goes yard Wednesday

(8/20/2014) Royals outfielder Alex Gordon hit his 14th home run Wednesday against the Rockies.

Gordon struck in his first at-bat. He took the first pitch he saw from Jorge De La Rosa out to right for the solo shot to lead off the second inning. Gordon would later walk, reaching base twice during the contest. He finished 1 for 2, with one run scored and one RBI. 


Trevor Rosenthal earns 37th save Wednesday

(8/20/2014) Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal picked up his 37th save Wednesday, walking one while recording the final two outs in his team's 7-3 win over the Reds.

The Cardinals entered the ninth inning up 7-0, but Rosenthal was called up with runners at second and third base and three runs already home. He retired the first batter he faced, issued a walk to load the bases and finished off the game with a ground ball to the shortstop. Rosenthal owns a 3.57 ERA and 74:35 K:BB ratio in 58 innings.


Salvador Perez to have MRI Thursday

(8/20/2014) Royals catcher Salvador Perez will have an MRI on his injured knee Thursday, according to the Kansas City Star.

Perez missed Wednesday's game due to the issue. He complained of knee tightness Monday, but was able to play through the injury Tuesday. Despite the MRI, manager Ned Yost remains adamant that the injury is not serious.
