Report: Nationals set to promote Nate Schierholtz
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12:14 pm ET) Veteran outfielder Nate Schierholtz is set for a promotion to the Nationals from Triple-A Syracuse, per the Washington Post.

The 30-year-old Schierholtz, who was dumped earlier in the month by the Cubs, had three hits - all in one game - for the Chiefs. He will provide an experienced left-handed bat off the bench.

Xander Bogaerts: 'I'm OK' after scary HBP
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12:01 pm ET) Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts has declared himself fine after taking an 89 mph changeup to the earpiece of his helmet Friday night. He wasn't blaming Seattle ace Felix Hernandez for the errant pitch.

"He's 0-2 and it probably slipped in his hand but it wasn't intentional," Bogaerts told ESPN. "You don't want to get hit in your head, obviously, but I got hit pretty good and thank God I'm OK right now."

Mission of mercy has Oswaldo Arcia out of Game 1
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:49 am ET) Torrid Twins outfielder Oswaldo Arcia is catching a break Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader against the Tigers. He is out of the lineup after spending most of the night in the hospital with a sick child, per the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Chris Parmelee is taking his place in right field.

Arcia has hit safely in six straight games with four home runs. He is expected to play in the nightcap.

Trevor Plouffe set to sit in opener of Saturday doubleheader
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:45 am ET) Perhaps Twins third baseman Trevor Plouffe got tired out running around the bases Friday night. But Ron Gardenhire has given him the afternoon off for the first game of the split doubleheader Saturday against Detroit.

Plouffe had three hits and scored four runs in a rout to open the weekend series.

Zach Walters goes deep for third straight
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11:31 am ET) Indians infielder Zach Walters continues to make his impact felt, as he homered for the third straight game in a 5-1 loss to the Astros Friday.

Walters had just one hit in the game, going 1 for 3 with a solo home run. He now has eight home runs  in 75 at-bats for the season, including five in 10 games since joining the Indians.

Jon Singleton hits late homer in win
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11:29 am ET) Astros first baseman Jon Singleton had just one hit Friday against the Indians, but it was a big one in a 5-1 win.

Singleton went 1 for 4 in the game, and his lone hit was a late three-run home run to clinch the game. He scored just once while striking out twice in the game.

Singleton has been a solid power source for the Astros, but contact issues have impacted him as a rookie. He is hitting .187/.290/.374 with 12 home runs and 40 RBI in 70 games.

Joe Panik still hitting it well
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11:28 am ET) Giants infielder Joe Panik continued his hot-hitting ways Friday, in a 10-3 win over the Nationals.

Panik, who recorded his sixth multi-hit performance in seven games, went 4 for 5 this time around. He hit his first major-league home run and drove in three runs, while scoring twice in the win.

Panik has been a solid contributor for the Giants since getting the call, hitting .316/.361/.383 in 40 games.

Miguel Montero keys Friday defeat of Padres
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:21 am ET) Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero crossed the plate for the first time in two weeks Friday night against San Diego. And he was able to step on it leisurely.

Montero slammed a two-run homer in the first inning and added a double and run to key the victory. He now owns a stat line on the season of .260/.345/.410.

Jayson Werth clubs first August homer
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11:20 am ET) Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth homered for the first time in nearly a month and a half Friday, in a 10-3 loss.

Werth, who has been bothered by a shoulder injury, hit a solo home run to left in the fourth inning, with the Nationals already trailing. He ultimately finished the game 2 for 4 with one run scored and one RBI.

Friday's home run was Werth's first since July 13, before the All-Star break. Still, he is hitting .311/.409/.444 overall since the break.

Justin Morneau finally goes deep again Friday
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:15 am ET) Summer had barely begun the last time Rockies first baseman Justin Morneau blasted off. But he slammed his first home run in two months in a Friday night loss to Miami.
