Steve Cishek nails down 24th save

(9:57 pm ET) Marlins closer Steve Cishek nailed down his 24th save Thursday against the Braves.

Cishek entered the game with a one-run lead, and was able to pick up the save. He induced three fly outs from the middle of the Braves lineup for the save. Cishek lowered his ERA to 3.32 with the appearance. 


Craig Kimbrel picks up rare loss Thursday

(9:55 pm ET) Braves closer Craig Kimbrel earned a rare loss Thursday against the Marlins.

Kimbrel entered a tie game in the ninth inning. He quickly worked a strikeout for the first out of the inning. Kimbrel also struck out Marcell Ozuna, but Ozuna reached base on a wild pitch. Ozuna would also take second on another wild pitch from Kimbrel. Jarrod Saltalamacchia then proceeded to hit a single, which drove Ozuna home. 

The Braves couldn't muster up a run in the bottom of the inning, giving Kimbrel the loss. He dropped to 0-2 on the year.


Henderson Alvarez goes eight strong against Atlanta

(9:50 pm ET) Marlins pitcher Henderson Alvarez tossed eight strong innings Thursday against the Braves.

Alvarez allowed two runs on six hits over eight innings of work. He struck out four and walked one. The Braves struck early against Alvarez, hitting a two-run homer in the second inning. Alvarez settled in at that point, tossing three more innings of scoreless ball. Alvarez threw 101 pitches during the outing. 

Alvarez was matched by Aaron Harang throughout the start. He nearly earned a no-decision, but the Marlins managed to scratch a run across in the top of the ninth inning, giving Alvarez the win. He improved to 7-5 on the year. Alvarez’s next start will come against Nationals.


Aaron Harang earns no decision Thursday

(9:49 pm ET) Braves pitcher Aaron Harang tossed a strong start Thursday against the Marlins.

Harang allowed two runs on seven hits over seven innings of work. He struck out five and walked two. Harang got off to a great start, tossing four scoreless innings to begin the game. He ran into trouble in the fifth. Harang walked the leadoff hitter, and then gave up a double to Jarrod Saltalamacchia. With two men on, Adeiny Hechavarria singled a run home. Christian Yelich would later ground into a double-play, which would bring in the other run.

Harang was matched by Marlins pitcher Henderson Alvarez, and did not factor into the decision. His next start will come against the Dodgers.


Phil Hughes dealing with shin contussion

(9:38 pm ET) Twins pitcher Phil Hughes has been diagnosed with a right shin contusion, and has been listed as day to day moving forward, FOX Sports North reports.

Hughes was forced out of Thursday's start against the White Sox after taking an Adam Dunn liner off the leg in the fourth inning. He allowed one run on four hits and no walks while striking out four over three innings of work before the injury. His status remains uncertain for Wednesday's start at Kansas City.

Jason Vargas to throw simulated game Saturday

(9:36 pm ET) Royals pitcher Jason Vargas threw a side session on Wednesday and is scheduled to throw a simulated game on Saturday, as he continues to work his way back from an appendectomy, MLB.com reports Thursday. Vargas has been sidelined since July 8. He is 8-4 with a 3.31 ERA and 82:29 K:BB ratio in 125 innings.

Phil Hughes exits start after taking a liner off the leg

(9:19 pm ET) Twins pitcher Phil Hughes was forced out of Thursday's start against the White Sox after taking an Adam Dunn liner off the leg. Hughes walked off the field in obvious pain with manager Ron Gardenhire and pitching coach Rick Anderson. He was replaced by Samuel Deduno in the top of the fourth inning.

Hughes allowed one run on four hits and no walks while striking out four over three innings of work before the injury. He owns a 4.03 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP over 21 starts (131 2/3 innings). He now remains uncertain for his next start, Wednesday at Kansas City.


Ruben Tejada expected to return Friday

(9:16 pm ET) Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada is expected to return to the starting lineup Friday, according to ESPN.

Tejada was hit in the head by a pitch during Wednesday's game, and sat out Thursday. The injury is not considered serious, and manager Terry Collins was just trying to be cautious with his shortstop. "We thought we’d give him one more day just as a precaution," Collins said. "He feels great. Said he could play, but we’ll just give him today and get him back in there tomorrow."

Tejada is hitting .235 over 260 at-bats. 


Angel Pagan could return soon

(9:05 pm ET) Giants outfielder Angel Pagan could return soon, according to the Mercury News.

Pagan is attempting to come back from a back injury. He may be able to return for the club's next road trip, according to manager Bruce Bochy. The team's next road trip begins August 1. Pagan was hitting .307/.356/.411 over 241 at-bats prior to the injury. 


Ehire Adrianza to be placed on the disabled list

(9:01 pm ET) Giants infielder Ehire Adrianza should be placed on the disabled list Friday, according to the Mercury News.

Adrianza reinjured his hamstring during Thursday's game. Manager Bruce Bochy said he expects Adrianza to be placed on the disabled list Friday. Adrianza is hitting .234 in 94 at-bats.
