Indians OF Abraham Almonte cracks grand slam in romp
by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(4:27 pm ET) Indians center fielder Abraham Almonte had a big day at the plate in his teams victory over the Angels, driving in four runs to fuel the 9-2 romp.

Almonte was 2-for-4 at the dish, with his fifth-inning grand slam breaking the game open. Almonte's third homer of the season gave him 14 RBIs.

Angels starter Jered Weaver hit hard again
by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(4:22 pm ET) Jered Weaver had another rough start for the Angels, this time giving up eight runs in a loss to the Indians on Sunday.

Weaver has now lost six of his last eight decisions to drop to 6-10 on the season. Sunday, he lasted just six innings, allowing nine hits while walking four and striking out just two.

The eight earned runs are a season high for Weaver, whose ERA rose to 4.94 in the defeat.

Rays SP Nathan Karns saddled with no-decision Sunday
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(4:17 pm ET) One more inning and perhaps Rays starter Nathan Karns would have celebrated his eighth win Sunday. As it was, he could at least celebrate keeping his team in the game long enough for his team to win.

Karns, whose pitch count has been limited a bit, tossed 91 in five innings and allowed two runs on six hits. He walked one and fanned five.

The right-hander struggled only in the third, when four singles, including RBI hits by Ben Zobrist and Matt Cain, tuned a 1-0 lead into a 2-1 deficit. He yielded only one hit the rest of the way.

Due greatly to an inability to go deep into games, Karns has just one quality start over the last six outings.

Blue Jays SP Mark Buehrle rolls Sunday to 14th victory
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(4:04 pm ET) Blue Jays veteran starter Mark Buehrle didn't need to be great Sunday against Detroit. His team's torrid offense made sure of that.

But Buehrle was excellent anyway in raising his record to 14-6. He gave up just one earned run on five hits in six innings with two walks and two strikeouts.

The Tigers were held to no RBI hits - only groundouts scored their runs against him.

Buehrle, who already has more wins than in any season since 2008, has won five of his last six decisions.

SP Josh Tomlin gets the job done for Indians
by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(4:04 pm ET) Josh Tomlin was sharp on the hill Sunday to lead the Indians to a sweep of the Angels, his third straight victory.

Tomlin went seven innings, scattering six hits and allowing just two earned runs. He struck out eight hitters and walked none, working an effective 96 pitches on the day.

Since returning from shoulder surgery, Tomlin has won three of his four starts, and he has lowered his ERA to 3.08.

Sizzling Jays mash Tigers SP Alfredo Simon for four dingers
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(3:58 pm ET) Tigers starter Alfredo Simon has been getting clobbered since mid-June. And he was pitching Sunday on the road against the explosive Blue Jays.

It was not a recipe for success.

Simon spent much of his afternoon watching baseballs travel over the fence. Toronto slugged four home runs against him. He allowed six runs on five hits in six innings with two walks and two strikeouts.

Blasts by Josh Donaldson and Edwin Encarnacion got Simon off to a bad start in the first, then taters by Kevin Pillar and Russell Martin added to his misery.

Simon has just one quality start over his last six outings. His 5.09 ERA is a season-high.

Cubs RP Neil Ramirez starting rehab with Double-A Tennessee
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(3:25 pm ET) Cubs reliever Neil Ramirez is set to begin a rehab assignment at Double-A Tennessee, per MLB.com.

Ramirez, who landed on the disabled list a month ago with abdominal soreness, has pitched in just 13 games this season and compiled a 3.12 ERA.

Brewers P Matt Garza remains in rotation for now
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(3:16 pm ET) A bad year has turned into a terrible one for Brewers veteran starter Matt Garza over his last three outings, but Craig Counsell is not ready to remove him from the rotation.

He is ready, however, to talk with Garza about his struggles. The right-hander has allowed 19 runs over his last 13 1/3 innings to raise his ERA to a rather disturbing 5.56, which ranks second-worst in the National League among qualifying starters.

Garza remains listed as the probable pitcher for Thursday against visiting Pittsburgh.

"We haven't sat down with Matt yet," Counsell told MLB.com. "We need to do that. But the way we're listed now is the way we are right now. ... The probables are accurate."

Garza owned a 3.63 ERA in 100 starts over the previous four years.

Giants 2B Joe Panik (back) has rehab stint delayed
by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(2:57 pm ET) Second baseman Joe Panik has had his rehab stint slowed as he tries to recover from a back injury that has sidelined him since Aug. 1, per CSN Bay Area.

Panik will remain with the team through their upcoming series against the Dodgers, which begins Monday, before joining Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday. The team is hoping to have Panik return when they start a series in Arizona on Sept. 7.

Panik is slashing .309/.374/.443 this season.

Padres re-acquire RP Chris Rearick
by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(2:40 pm ET) The Padres picked up a familiar face Sunday, placing claiming relief pitcher Chris Rearick from the Rangers, who had claimed Rearick from the Padres on Aug. 26 only to designate him for assignment a day later.

Rearick made his MLB debut and appeared in five games with the Padres this season, allowing four runs in three innings. He was 0-3 with a 5.23 ERA in 37 games with Triple-A El Paso.
