Mets' Jon Niese gives up one run, picks up sixth win on Tuesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(10:24 pm ET) Mets left-hander Jonathon Niese posted yet another brilliant outing, limiting the Marlins to one run over seven innings on Tuesday. Niese gave up four hits and a walk while striking out six in the 5-1 victory.

Niese left the game with the score tied 1-1, but the Mets put up a four-spot in the top of the eighth in support of their starter.

Niese (6-9) has allowed three runs or fewer in 10 of his past 11 outings, with the only off night coming against the Dodgers on July 24. Despite the strong pitching, Niese has just three wins in that 11-start stretch.

Royals catcher Salvador Perez connects for 16th home run
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(10:18 pm ET) Royals catcher Salvador Perez went 3 for 4 at the plate in Kansas City's 5-1 win over the Tigers on Tuesday. Perez did his damage in the fourth when he blasted the first pitch he saw from Just Verlander over the left center field wall for a two-run shot, his 16th of the year.

Perez also singled home another RBI to bring his total to 46 on the year. He is hitting .249 on the season.

Athletics RP Sean Doolittle feels good after simulated game
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(10:16 pm ET) Athletics pitcher Sean Doolittle said he felt well after throwing a simulated game Tuesday, reports MLB.com

"I thought he threw the ball considerably better than we saw in his last simulated games," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "We're excited about where he's at right now."

Doolittle is on disabled list with a shoulder injury and the team will decide Wednesday if he can begin his rehab assignment.

Rockies' Kyle Kendrick hopes to return by end of month
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(10:15 pm ET) Rockies pitcher Kyle Kendrick will receive an anti-inflammatory shot in his shoulder Wednesday in the hopes of returning later this month, reports MLB.com. A recent MRI revealed Kendrick is dealing with inflammation in his shoulder.

"It should calm it down, hopefully, and we'll see how I feel from there," Kendrick said. "Hopefully, I'll be back by the end of the month, or the beginning of September. So that's good news."

Royals pitcher Danny Duffy earns fifth win of the year
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(10:12 pm ET) Royals pitcher Danny Duffy allowed one run on five hits in seven innings of work in Kansas City's 5-1 win over the Tigers on Tuesday.

Duffy wasn't overpowering with his stuff, allowing four walks and striking out just two, but did enough to keep Detroit off the scoreboard to earn the victory. Duffy lone earned run came off a Victor Martinez single to left field, scoring Ian Kinsler, in the sixth.

Duffy, now 5-5, moved his ERA to 4.04 in 89 innings of work this season. He will look to keep things rolling Friday against the Angels.

Blue Jays SS Troy Tulowitzki hits second HR with new team
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(10:10 pm ET) Troy Tulowitzki seems to be loving life north of the border. The new Blue Jays' shortstop connected on his 14th home run of the season, and his second in seven games since joining the Jays.

Tulowitzki's solo shot gave Toronto a 2-0 lead in the third inning, en route to the 3-1 win over the Twins. He has hit safely in five of the seven games with Toronto, going 8 for 24 over that time.

Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander falters against Royals in loss
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(10:07 pm ET) Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander allowed five runs on 10 hits in seven innings of work in Detroit's 5-1 loss to the Royals on Tuesday. Verlander, who struck out five and walked none, ran into problems in the second when he allowed three singles to plate a run.

Then in the fourth, Verlander gave up a two-run homer to Salvador Perez. Verlander, now 1-4, allowed just two runs in his previous two outings. The defeat on Tuesday moved his ERA to 5.05 on the year.  He will look to bounce back against the Astros on Saturday.

Blue Jays' Josh Donaldson blasts solo home run in win Tuesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(10:06 pm ET) Third baseman Josh Donaldson got the Blue Jays on the board early, smacking a solo home run in the first inning of Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Twins. Donaldson belted his 28th homer of the season with one out in the first.

It was his only hit of the game, but he has now homered in back-to-back games. He also has recorded five home runs and 12 RBI over his past nine games for the Jays.

Reds' Aroldis Chapman earns 23rd save of season
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(10:02 pm ET) Reds closer Aroldis Chapman pitched a perfect ninth to record his 23rd save of the year, Tuesday against St. Louis.

Chapman struck out two of the three batters he faced. He converted his 14th straight save opportunity.

Twins SP Phil Hughes gives up three runs in loss to Blue Jays
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(10:01 pm ET) Twins starter Phil Hughes fell one out shy of a quality start on Tuesday, but still pitched decently in a loss against the Blue Jays. Hughes allowed three runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out three, needing 99 pitches to get through his outing in the 3-1 defeat.

Hughes (10-7, 4.14 ERA) gave up a pair of solo home runs in this one--one to Josh Donaldson in the first, and another to Troy Tulowitzki in the third. But the Twins' offense was unable to get much off Blue Jays starter Marco Estrada.

This makes back-to-back starts of less than six innings for Hughes, allowing a total of eight runs in those two games.
