Report: Dodgers may trade top prospect for nonrental
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(8:39 pm ET) The Dodgers "haven't flat out said no" to trading one of their top three prospects for a player, as long as that player isn't due to be a free agent after the season, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Previous reports have said that outfielder Joc Pederson, third baseman Corey Seager and pitcher Julio Urias were off the table in trade talks, but that only applies to a rental like Jon Lester. The Phillies and Rays may be able to get the Dodgers to part with at least one of the team's top prospects in a deal for Cole Hamels or David Price, respectively, though neither trade has been reported to be in the works.

Michael Saunders closing in on rehab assignment
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(8:35 pm ET) Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon remains hopeful that outfielder Michael Saunders will be able to begin a rehab assignment by the weekend, MLB.com reports.

Saunders isn't swinging the bat at 100 percent yet and that "it's going to take some time," according to McClendon, but he was able to participate in batting practice for a second straight day Wednesday. Saunders has been sidelined since July 10 due to a strained oblique.

Andrew Cashner closing in on rehab assignment
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(8:28 pm ET) Padres pitcher Andrew Cashner should begin a rehab assignment next week after throwing another successful bullpen session Wednesday, MLB.com reports.

Cashner was able to throw sliders in Wednesday's session, something that caused him soreness earlier in the year. He has been out since June 20 while recovering from a shoulder injury. Cashner owns a 2.36 ERA and 59:22 K:BB ratio in 76 1/3 innings.

Geovany Soto to begin rehab Friday, return Aug. 8
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7:55 pm ET) Rangers catcher Geovany Soto expects to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Round Rock Friday and return to the team the following Friday, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

Soto was placed on the disabled list last week with a groin injury. He has made just three appearances with the Rangers this season, going 4 for 11 at the plate.

Cubs option Blake Parker to Triple-A
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7:48 pm ET) The Cubs optioned pitcher Blake Parker to Triple-A Iowa Wednesday.

Parker is being sent down for a fresh bullpen arm after the team's 16-inning marathon Tuesday. He owns a 5.59 ERA and 9:3 K:BB ratio in 9 2/3 innings over seven appearances.

Jordy Mercer slugs seventh home run Wednesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7:39 pm ET) Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer went 1 for 3 with a two-run home run in his team's 7-5 loss to the Giants Wednesday.

Mercer has managed to pick up a base hit in five straight games, but Wednesday's home run was his first since June 21. He has hit .254/.296/.370 with seven home runs and 35 RBI in 335 at-bats.

Josh Harrison homers in fourth straight game Wednesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7:37 pm ET) Pirates infielder Josh Harrison kept his home-run streak alive Wednesday, going 1 for 5 with a two-run home run in his team's 7-5 loss to the Giants.

Harrison has hit a home run in four straight games after managing just five homers in his first 87 games. He's 8 for 17 with two walks, six RBI and two stolen bases during his four-game home-run stretch. Harrison has hit .297/.335/.474 with nine home runs, 37 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 293 at-bats.

Santiago Casilla delivers eighth save Wednesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7:33 pm ET) Giants closer Santiago Casilla picked up his eighth save Wednesday, giving up one hit and striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning to finish off his team's 7-5 win over the Pirates.

Casilla hadn't pitched in a week after giving up a run in a successful save conversion, but he didn't appear thrown off by the long rest, throwing 10 of his 14 pitches for strikes. He owns a 1.13 ERA and 29:11 K:BB ratio in 39 2/3 innings.

Jean Machi picks up sixth win Wednesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7:29 pm ET) Giants pitcher Jean Machi earned a win Wednesday, pitching two scoreless innings and striking out one in his team's 7-5 victory over the Pirates.

Machi (6-0) managed to face just five batters after inheriting two runners in the sixth inning, as the Giants managed to turn an unusual double play on a one-out walk with first base open, as the runner on second was caught errantly heading to third, and the runner on third took off for home while the first runner was caught between bases. Machi owns a 1.55 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 32:11 K:BB ratio in 46 1/3 innings.

Justin Wilson takes loss vs. Giants
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7:23 pm ET) Pirates pitcher Justin Wilson was charged with a loss Wednesday, surrendering two earned runs on two hits and one walk in one inning and striking out one in his team's 7-5 defeat against the Giants.

Wilson (3-2) gave up an RBI single in the seventh inning to tie the game before watching the go-ahead run come home on a passed ball. He owns a 4.95 ERA and 41:23 K:BB ratio in 40 innings.
