Rangers SS Elvis Andrus dealing with sore left knee
    by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(12:16 pm ET) Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus met with Dr. Keith Meister after leaving Sunday's workout due to a sore left knee, general manager Jon Daniels said Monday. Although, the diagnosis seems positive, as Dr. Meister doesn't think Andrus' injury is anything serious, per Daniels.

Andrus won't play in Monday's intrasquad game, but he will hit in the batting cages. Andrus could also be ready to play in Wednesday's spring opener against the Royals.

Rangers' Michael Kirkman (shoulder) plays catch Monday
    by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(12:15 pm ET) Rangers pitcher Michael Kirkman (shoulder) played catch on flat ground Monday, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

Kirkman, who has been dealing with shoulder soreness, said he'll throw from a half-mound Tuesday or Wednesday. He surrendered just one earned run in 5 2/3 innings with the Rangers last season.

Orioles' Matt Wieters set for 'catcher movement' drills Monday
    by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(12:09 pm ET) Orioles catcher Matt Wieters will get behind the plate Monday to take part in "catcher movement" drills, which involve quickly throwing to each base, MLB.com reports.

"It's got to be a little more reactive and instinctual, which is what we're going to try to accomplish with this," Wieters said. "We'll go by feel. I got into -- a little bit earlier in the rehab -- where I wanted to test it, test it, test it, then you end up pushing it too far and you can set yourself back. It's a matter of just going by feel and getting as much out of it as we can without feeling like we're fatiguing and risking injury."

Wieters caught two innings in Sunday's intrasquad game, marking his first time catching a game since undergoing Tommy John surgery. "It's definitely nice to get back there, but as far as feeling like I was rusty or anything like that, I really didn't. It felt kind of normal back there being a catcher," Wieters said.

The catcher is expected to make his Grapefruit League debut in Tuesday's home opener as the team's designated hitter.

Rangers SP Derek Holland (shoulder) plans to throw Monday
    by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11:58 am ET) Rangers starting pitcher Derek Holland, who was scratched from pitching in Sunday's intrasquad game due to shoulder soreness, plans to throw Monday, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Taylor has been recovering from a neck twinge and was also able to take part in Sunday's workouts. Taylor should see significant time in right field while Jayson Werth (shoulder) recovers.

A-Rod will not play in Yankees' spring opener Tuesday
    by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

    Yankees' Brendan Ryan 'progressing nicely'
    by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11:45 am ET) Yankees infielder Brendan Ryan said Monday that his recovery from a mid-back muscle strain is "progressing nicely," the Star-Ledger reports.

Ryan, who hurt his back doing bicep curls, said he's targeting a late-week return from the issue. He also missed much of last year's spring training with an unrelated back injury.

Phillies' Chase Utley misses Monday workout
    by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11:40 am ET) Phillies second baseman Chase Utley didn't work out Monday as he continues to recover from an ankle issue, MLB.com reports.

Utley won't play in the spring opener and said Monday that he'll miss this week's slate of games entirely, the Philadelphia Daily News reports. The second baseman that while his ankle has improved in the last week, it's still pretty swollen and he has yet to begin running.

Utley suffered the ankle injury in January after stepping on a baseball.

Mariners' Rickie Weeks will also play at first base this spring
    by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11:38 am ET) Rickie Weeks has primarily been working in the outfield since arriving for spring training, but Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said Monday that Weeks will also work at first base later this spring, per MLB.com.

“He will be that backup first baseman in case something happens,” said McClendon, noting he’s leaning more toward Weeks than fellow utility man Willie Bloomquist as a backup first baseman.
