Shawn Kelley says he's back to pre-injury form
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12:46 pm ET) Yankees reliever Shawn Kelley, who's pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings the last two days, said he feels like he did before a back injury sent him to the disabled list.

"The first handful of outings, there was still some concern about my back," he told The Journal News. "It felt fine, but when you walk around for a month and you can barely bend over, it tends to get ingrained in your mind. I’ve had a few weeks now straight where I haven’t had to wake up in the morning thinking about my back, and I think that’s allowed me to get back to where I was before I got hurt."

Kelley is 1-2 with a 3.86 ERA and four saves in five chances.

Mookie Betts moves up in lineup
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12:31 pm ET) Red Sox rookie outfielder Mookie Betts was moved up from eighth to sixth in the batting order for Thursday's game against the White Sox. Betts went 2 for 3 with two runs scored Wednesday, highlighted by an 11-pitch at-bat against Chicago ace Chris Sale.

Over his last four games, Betts is 5 for 16 with a homer and four runs scored.

Reds DFA struggled Brett Marshall
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12:30 pm ET) The Reds designated pitcher Brett Marshall for assignment Thursday, in order to clear up a spot on the 40-man roster.

Marshall has struggled badly since returning from a finger injury this season, posting a 10.97 ERA with 27 walks in 21 1/3 innings.

Alex Gordon not expected to hit disabled list
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(11:52 am ET) Royals left fielder Alex Gordon's sprained right wrist isn't expected to land him on the disabled list, manager Ned Yost told MLB.com.  Gordon was scratched from Wednesday's lineup but served as a defensive replacement late in the game.

"I don't think we're going to have to DL him," Yost said. "It's a sprained wrist. I think he's going to go in, they're going to check it and they're going to inject it, and then, he's going to have four days [during the Detroit series] and four days [during the All-Star period], and he's going to be fine. If I put him on the DL, I'll lose him for another week."

Ryan Braun returns from back injury
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11:43 am ET) Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun is back in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Phillies, after missing two games with a back injury. Braun had been available off the bench for Wednesday's game, so his return does not come as much of a surprise at this point.

Hisashi Iwakuma, Chris Young set for weekend series
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11:40 am ET) The Mariners set their rotation for this weekend's series against the Athletics Wednesday, according to The News Tribune.

Felix Hernandez was bumped back a day to start Friday, as previously announced. Hisashi Iwakuma will follow him Saturday, and Chris Young will get one more start before the All-Star break, set for Sunday's first half closer.

Jed Lowrie sets career mark
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(11:34 am ET) Athletics shortstop Jed Lowrie has produced a career-high five straight multi-hit games. He's gone 2 for 4 in each, raising his average to .234. In that span, Lowrie has scored five runs and driven in two.

Despite his poor average, Lowrie's 23.7 percent line-drive rate is his best since his rookie year, notes MLB.com.

"Literally everything is exactly the same, except the hits weren't falling," Lowrie said before Wednesday's game. "It still is a head-scratcher."

Scott Kazmir deadly in the daytime
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(11:28 am ET) Athletics pitcher Scott Kazmir, who faces the Giants on Thursday afternoon, has been utterly dominant in day games. He's 4-0 with a 1.09 ERA in six afternoon starts. For the season, Kazmir is 10-3 with a 2.53 ERA in 18 starts.

Rangers impressed with Roman Mendez
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(11:15 am ET) Rangers reliever Roman Mendez, who made his major-league debut Tuesday night with two scoreless innings against the Astros, became the third pitcher in Rangers history to throw at least two innings without allowing a hit in his debut, reports MLB.com.

"They said he was throwing strikes, getting his slider across the plate, and that's what he did [Tuesday] night -- attacked the zone," manager Ron Washington said. "Now I didn't know he threw it 97 [mph]. ... When he popped 97 last night, I asked [pitching coach] Mike [Maddux], 'He throws 97?' He said yeah."

Michael Pineda to throw bullpen session
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(11:00 am ET) Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda, who continues to deal with shoulder inflammation, is scheduled to throw a bullpen session later this week, reports MLB.com. However, Pineda is not expected to return until mid-August at the earliest, the report said.
