Joel Peralta hits DL with illness

(4:21 pm ET) The Rays placed Joel Peralta on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, as a result of an illness.

Peralta is believed to have contracted the illness over the All-Star break, and has been too ill to pitch since. The DL move is retroactive to July 13, though it is not clear when exactly he is expected back. 


Report: Dodgers trying to trade Matt Kemp

(4:16 pm ET) The Dodgers are trying hard to trade outfielder Matt Kemp, according to baseball writer Danny Knobler. Kemp has five seasons left on an eight-year, $160 million contract.

Jeff Beliveau gets the call Tuesday

(4:16 pm ET) The Rays recalled pitcher Jeff Beliveau from Triple-A Durham Tuesday, after Joel Peralta was placed on the disabled list.

Beliveau has been up and down with the Rays a few times this season, but has appeared in just two games. He has tossed a pair of scoreless innings in his time in the majors so far. 


Erasmo Ramirez gets the call for start Tuesday

(4:11 pm ET) The Mariners officially recalled pitcher Erasmo Ramirez Tuesday, ahead of his scheduled start against the Mets that evening.  

Ramirez was announced as the starter the previous day, after spending a month in Triple-A. He had a 4.58 ERA in 53 innings in 11 major-league starts prior to being sent down.


Jake Smolinski sitting out with foot injury Tuesday

(4:05 pm ET) Rangers outfielder Jake Smolinski was out of the lineup Tuesday against the Yankees, one day after suffering a bruised left foot.

Smolinski remains day to day moving forward, after X-rays came back negative Monday. 


Ankle still keeping Alex Rios out Tuesday

(4:02 pm ET) Rangers outfielder Alex Rios is out of the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Yankees, as he continues to deal with an ankle injury.

Rios has missed three starts as a result of the injury, but is expected back before the end of the series Thursday.  


Chase Headley not starting Tuesday, will soon

(3:58 pm ET) Newly acquired Yankees third baseman Chase Headley is not in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rangers, but he will be available off the bench, manager Joe Girardi told reporters before first pitch.

Headley was acquired from the Padres in a trade earlier in the day Tuesday, and will likely step into the lineup as the team's starting third baseman before long. 


Paco Rodriguez optioned back to Triple-A

(3:56 pm ET) Dodgers reliever Paco Rodriguez was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque to clear a roster spot Tuesday for starting pitcher Josh Beckett, who was activated off the disabled list.

Geovany Soto heads back to DL with groin injury

(3:51 pm ET) The Rangers placed catcher Geovany Soto on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right groin Tuesday, the team announced.

Soto was removed from Monday's game as a result of the injury, and goes back on the DL less than a week after he recovered from a knee injury. Soto has appeared in just three games this season, as he underwent surgery on his right knee just before the start of the season.
