Alex Gordon won't play in All-Star game

(4:57 pm ET) Royals outfielder Alex Gordon said he will make the trip to the All-Star game, but he will not play due to a wrist injury, according to FOX Sports Kansas City. He won't go on the disabled list as of now, but he hopes to be back in the lineup after the All-Star break.

Xander Bogaerts moving back to shortstop?

(4:42 pm ET) Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said Wednesday he hasn't ruled out moving Xander Bogaerts back to shortstop this season. However, manager John Farrell took a different stance Thursday, per MLB.com.

"We don't want to move Xander back and forth. We want some stability defensively," Farrell said. "Until that combination of players changes, we'll stay as is."


Bud Norris not an option to start Sunday

(4:37 pm ET) Orioles pitcher Bud Norris may be available out of the bullpen for the final game of the first half Sunday, manager Buck Showalter told the Baltimore Sun Thursday.

Norris was considered a possible option to start Sunday's game against the Yankees, though it would have been on short rest after he started Wednesday. Instead, the team will look for another option to start, with Norris possibly available to piggyback if needed.

Norris returned from the disabled list Wednesday, after missing more than two weeks with a groin injury. He will likely slot back in the rotation after the All-Star break. 


Angels make a few roster moves Thursday

(4:32 pm ET) The Angels made a few roster moves prior to Thursday's game at Texas.

They optioned pitcher Cam Bedrosian to Double-A Arkansas, while also recalling Cory Rasmus from Triple-A Salt Lake and selecting the contract of pitcher Drew Rucinski from Double-A Arkansas. 

Also, pitcher Nick Maronde was designated for assignment.


Matt West gets the call Thursday

(4:23 pm ET) The Rangers recalled pitcher Matt West from Triple-A Round Rock Thursday, to take Phil Irwin's place on the active roster.

West had appeared in 19 games at Round Rock, posting a 4.50 ERA with 28 strikeouts in 24 innings of work.


C.J. Wilson lands on 15-day DL

(4:23 pm ET) The Angels placed starting pitcher C.J. Wilson on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with a right ankle sprain. Wilson has struggled in his last four starts, posting a 10.26 ERA in that span.

Phil Irwin optioned down after start

(4:22 pm ET) The Rangers optioned pitcher Phil Irwin to Triple-A Round Rock Thursday, following his first start of the season Wednesday. 

Irwin allowed three runs on eight hits in four innings in his start Wednesday, a loss to the Astros in a spot start. 


Brandon Phillips could miss two months with thumb surgery

(4:17 pm ET) Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips will under surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported Thursday.

Phillips suffered the injury Wednesday when he landed awkwardly while fielding, and further examination Thursday revealed the extent of the injury. He will miss eight to 12 weeks while recovering from the injury, possibly putting him out through the end of the regular season.

Phillips had appeared in 86 of the team's first 91 games prior to the injury, batting .272/.308/.392 in 334 at-bats. 


Audry Perez called up, to back up Tony Cruz following Yadier Molina injury

(3:59 pm ET) The Cardinals recalled catcher Audry Perez from Triple-A Memphis Thursday, following Yadier Molina's placement on the disabled list with a thumb injury.

Perez will likely serve as the primary backup to Tony Cruz, according to the Belleville News-Democrat. Molina could be out for the rest of the regular season following a torn ligament in his thumb. 


Brett Gardner only sits out one game

(3:58 pm ET) Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner returned to the starting lineup Thursday against the Indians after sitting out Wednesday due to a lower abdominal strain. Gardner is batting .296 (8 for 27) with one triple, one home run, five RBI, five walks and five runs in eight July games.
