Xavier Cedeno on his way up
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(2:56 pm ET) Nationals pitcher Xavier Cedeno is on his way to the majors.

The team called up Cedeno Friday in order to get more help in the bullpen. Blake Treinen was sent down in order to make room for Cedeno. Last season, Cedeno posted a 6.57 ERA with the Astros and the Nationals. He tossed just 12 1/3 innings in the majors.

Blake Treinen sent back down Friday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(2:53 pm ET) Nationals pitcher Blake Treinen has been sent back to the minors Friday.

Treinen tossed 2 2/3 innings Thursday night against the Cardinals, giving up one earned run. Overall, he appeared in three games, posting a 1.35 ERA. He struck out seven and walked two in 6 2/3 innings.

Brendan Ryan hoping to return by end of next week
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(2:41 pm ET) Yankees middle infielder Brendan Ryan saw live pitching Friday for the first time since sustaining a back injury in March and believes he can return sooner than expectations. His anticipated return had been early May.

"I'd say later on next week could be probably the earliest and somewhere between there and the following week could be probably realistic," he told the Newark Star-Ledger.

The 32-year-old Ryan added that the team has suggested they would like him to get 35 at-bats in a minor league rehab stint before coming off the disabled list. He only received nine plate appearances in exhibition play, so he will require more before returning to a big league batter's box.

Work on control paying off for Jarred Cosart
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(2:11 pm ET) The only unimpressive number compiled by Astros flamethrower Jarred Cosart in 2013 was 35 walks in 60 innings, which he overcame to register a 1.95 ERA. But considering he struck out just 33, he understood entering this season that he needed to improve his control.

Mission accomplished - at least so far. Cosart has six walks and 15 strikeouts in 18 innings in 2014. He walked two and fanned eight to help his team defeat Texas in his last start.

"Last year, the walks were too high and the strikeouts were too low," he told MLB.com. "Like I told everyone from the beginning, it was something I really worked on during spring training ... and it has been paying off."

Cosart is 1-1 with a 1.056 WHIP and 4.00 ERA this year.

Jose Tabata returns Friday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(1:36 pm ET) Pirates outfielder Jose Tabata returned to the starting lineup Friday.

Tabata missed Wednesday's game due to concussion-like symptoms. While he didn't start Thursday, he was used off the bench during the game. Tabata will play right field and hit seventh Friday.

Report: Joel Hanrahan not ready to negotiate with any team
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(1:18 pm ET) Reliever Joel Hanrahan is not yet negotiating with any team after throwing for scouts on Thursday, according to FoxSports.com, which is further reporting that he is expecting to field offers next week and that some teams are requesting medical exams.

Hanrahan has recovered from Tommy John surgery and has not pitched since last May. But he was among the premier closers in the sport for the Pirates in 2011 and 2012.

Manager: Tanner Scheppers remaining in rotation
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12:55 pm ET) Ron Washington is not planning on removing struggling right-hander Tanner Scheppers from the Rangers rotation until at least Matt Harrison returns, according to the Dallas News.

Scheppers allowed six runs in 2 1/3 innings Thursday to blow a 4-0 lead and now owns a bloated 9.82 earned run average. The team's opening day starter has yielded 20 runs on 27 hits and eight walks in 18 1/3 innings. But he has received a vote of confidence from Washington.

"It's not even something that has crossed my mind," he said. "We know it's a work in progress."

Scheppers is slated to start in Oakland on Tuesday.

Report: Groin ailment adding to misery for Carlos Santana
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12:29 pm ET) Theories about the early-season struggles of embattled Indians cleanup hitter Carlos Santana have gone from the mental to the physical.

He had admitted that a position change that has him serving as the starting third baseman and backup catcher had affected him at the plate. It has since been revealed that he is dealing with a sore left groin, per the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Santana had his thigh wrapped after the Wednesday game in Detroit, but insisted on playing Thursday, when he experienced yet another 0 for 4. He has just one hit in his last 27 at-bats and just one RBI on the season.

Manager on Sergio Santos: 'Forget about last night'
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12:16 pm ET) John Gibbons has given temporary closer Sergio Santos a vote of confidence after a miserable outing that cost the Blue Jays a victory Thursday night at Minnesota.

Santos faced three batters, gave up three runs on three hits and threw three wild pitches in taking the defeat and raising his ERA to 8.44.

Gibbons, however, has tossed that performance aside. "He's done a tremendous job for us this year, forget about last night," he told MLB Network Radio.

Closer Casey Janssen is still experiencing back problems, but will reassume that role upon his return.

Aroldis Chapman cleared to throw live batting practice
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(12:15 pm ET) Reds reliever Aroldis Chapman has been cleared to throw live batting practice, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer

Chapman has progressed after he was hit in the face by a line drive during spring training. He's been able to get through bullpen sessions without any issues. That could change when he faces hitters for the first time, so throwing live batting practice will be a significant step in his recovery.
