Cardinals' Jay leading off, Carpenter batting second Tuesday

(4:07 pm ET) Cardinals center fielder Jon Jay is batting leadoff Tuesday against the Phillies, with third baseman Matt Carpenter moving to the No. 2 spot in the lineup.

It's the first time this season the Cardinals haven't had Carpenter in the leadoff spot, and former No. 2 hitter Jason Heyward is back in the lineup Tuesday but batting sixth. Jay has hit just .233/.324/.267 with seven runs scored in 60 at-bats. Carpenter has hit .373/.427/.640 with three home runs, 11 RBI and a league-leading 11 doubles in 75 at-bats.

The Cardinals are heavy favorites (-210) against the Phillies Tuesday.


Rays DFA pitcher Everett Teaford, activate Xavier Cedeno

(4:06 pm ET) The Rays have designated pitcher Everett Teaford for assignment to make room for newly acquired pitcher Xavier Cedeno, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Teaford threw just 2 1/3 innings this season for Tampa Bay with a 3.86 ERA and two strikeouts. Cedeno was traded for the second time in a week Monday when Tampa Bay acquired him from the Dodgers. He has posted a 6.00 ERA in three innings of work with four strikeouts and two walks.


Cardinals' Jason Heyward batting sixth Tuesday

(4:03 pm ET) Cardinals right fielder Jason Heyward (hamstring) is back in the lineup Tuesday.

Heyward, who suffered a hamstring injury, is batting sixth Tuesday, marking his first time out of the No. 2 spot in the lineup this season. He has hit .205/.227/.356 with two home runs, four RBI and one stolen base in 73 at-bats.

The Cardinals are heavy favorites (-210) Tuesday.


Brett Cecil back in closer's role for Blue Jays

(4:00 pm ET) Blue Jays reliever Brett Cecil is returning to the closer's role, manager John Gibbons announced Thursday. Gibbons added Aaron Loup and Roberto Osuna will serve as the primary setup relievers.

Cecil was removed as the team's closer April 9 after a rocky start to the season. Rookie Miguel Castro was elevated to the closer's role after Cecil was removed from the ninth-inning responsibilities.

Castro initially thrived in the closer's role before running into his own issues. He is 0-1 with a 9.82 ERA, two saves and two blown saves in his last five outings. Gibbons said he will use Castro in low-leverage situations to help get him back on track.


Rays' Logan Forsythe back in the lineup, Brandon Guyer out

(4:00 pm ET) Rays second baseman Logan Forsythe is back in the starting lineup Tuesday against the Yankees with Tim Beckham sliding to designated hitter and Brandon Guyer moving to the bench, the team announced per the Tampa Bay Times.

Forsythe got the day off Monday with Beckham moving to second. He is hitting .262 with two home runs in 61 at-bats this season. Guyer had started the last four games in a row before getting Tuesday off.


Reds tab Lorenzen to start Wednesday, Leake moved to Thursday

(3:56 pm ET) The Reds will start Michael Lorenzen Wednesday against the Brewers and push Mike Leake to make Thursday's start against the Braves, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Lorenzen will be making his major-league debut Wednesday. He's 2-1 with a 2.84 ERA and 12:4 K:BB ratio in 19 innings over three Triple-A starts.

Leake has tossed at least seven innings in three straight starts and owns a 3.90 ERA and 22:8 K:BB ratio in 27 2/3 innings over four starts this season. Lorenzen


Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings out of the lineup again Tuesday

(3:53 pm ET) Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings is out of the lineup once again Tuesday while dealing with a knee injury, the team announced per the Tampa Bay Times.

Jennings left Saturday's game with the injury and has been held out of the lineup ever since with Kevin Kiermaier drawing his third consecutive start in center. Jennings is hitting .222 with two RBI in 63 at-bats this season.


Nationals' Anthony Rendon not in Double-A lineup Tuesday

(3:49 pm ET) Nationals infielder Anthony Rendon is not in the starting lineup for Double-A Harrisburg Tuesday, the Washington Post reports.

Rendon is working his way back from a knee injury, but he was scratched Monday after feeling fatigued. He is expected to be used at both second base and third base when he returns to the lineup.


Red Sox's Shane Victorino likely to stay on DL longer than 15 days

(3:45 pm ET) Red Sox manager John Farrell isn't certain outfielder Shane Victorino (hamstring) will be able to come off the disabled list when eligible on May 8 against the Blue Jays, per The Boston Herald. Victorino was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday, with the move retroactive to April 23.

The veteran outfielder has increased his running program and could begin a rehab assignment next week, per The Boston Globe.


Tigers' Rajai Davis out of the lineup Tuesday, Nick Castellanos back

(3:45 pm ET) Tigers outfielder Rajai Davis is out of the lineup again Tuesday against the Twins with a groin injury while Nick Castellanos returns to third base, the team announced. Davis missed Monday's game with the injury and will be replaced by Anthony Gose. He is hitting .341 with four RBI in 41 at-bats this season.

Castellanos got the day off Monday after playing eight straight at third. He is hitting .227 with two home runs in 66 at-bats this season. The Tigers are currently the favorites (-135) against the Twins.
