Nelson Cruz homers again vs. Cubs, establishes new career-high
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5:37 pm ET) Orioles outfielder Nelson Cruz had just one hit Friday against the Cubs, but he made it count as he set a new career-high in home runs in a 4-1 loss.

Cruz clubbed a solo homer in the seventh inning for the team's only run of the game, while finishing the game 1 for 4 overall. It was his second game in a row with a home run, giving him 34 for the season.

Cruz leads the American League with his 34 home runs, while ranking fourth in RBI with 87 in 124 games. He is hitting .258/.326/.520 in 473 at-bats overall.

Luis Valbuena goes deep for homer No. 12
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5:34 pm ET) Cubs infielder Luis Valbuena displayed his power again Friday, as he homered for the second time in three games in a 4-1 win over the Orioles.

Valbuena went 2 for 4 with a solo home run, his only run scored or driven in during the game. He has 12 home runs and 42 RBI in 117 games, while hitting .245/.324/.429 overall on the season.

Gonzalez Germen optioned to the minors
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(5:32 pm ET) Mets pitcher Gonzalez Germen has been optioned to the minors Friday.

Bartolo Colon returned from the bereavement list, making Germen expendable. Germen has a 5.27 ERA over 27 1/3 innings.

Hector Rondon saves sixth straight
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5:31 pm ET) Cubs closer Hector Rondon casually closed out a 4-1 win over the Orioles Friday, as he worked a perfect ninth inning.

Rondon set the Orioles down in order on just eight innings, while picking up two flyball outs and one groundball out. He has now saved six chances in a row, and is 20 for 24 on the season, with a 2.86 ERA In 50 1/3 innings.

Bartolo Colon activated from the bereavement list
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(5:30 pm ET) Mets pitcher Bartolo Colon has been activated from the bereavement list Friday.

Colon was slated to pitch Sunday, so the move isn't a huge surprise. He's posted a 3.85 ERA over 161 1/3 innings.

Kevin Gausman runs into trouble late in loss
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5:29 pm ET) Orioles pitcher Kevin Gausman fell short of a quality start Friday, in a 4-1 loss to the Cubs.

Gausman opened the outing with three scoreless innings, but the Cubs jumped on him for two runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth. He was charged with three runs on six hits over five innings of work, while striking out seven batters on 101 pitches in the loss.

Gausman fell to 7-5 in 14 starts with the loss, while his ERA rose slightly, to 3.81 in 78 innings of work. His next outing is set for Wednesday against the Rays.

Late homer only blemish as Jake Arrieta ends winless streak
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5:25 pm ET) Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta dominated his former team Friday, in a 4-1 win over the Orioles.

Arrieta allowed just one run in seven innings of work, on a seventh inning solo home run by Nelson Cruz. That late blemish aside, the Orioles could hardly touch Arrieta, who allowed just four hits and a walk over his seven innings, while striking out five batters on 99 pitches in the win.

Arrieta brought a three-start winless streak to an end Friday, despite having allowed just two runs in his previous two outings. He has a 7-4 record and 2.53 ERA in 124 1/3 innings this season, heading into his start against the Reds Thursday.

Anibal Sanchez throws from flat ground Friday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(5:22 pm ET) Tigers pitcher Anibal Sanchez was able to throw from flat ground Friday, according to MLB.com.

Sanchez is planning to throw again between the team's games Saturday. He's been sidelined since August 8 due to a strained pectoral muscle. Sanchez has a 3.46 ERA over 125 innings.

Jacob Turner a candidate to start Tuesday
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5:12 pm ET) Cubs pitcher Jacob Turner tossed two innings Thursday against the Cubs, allowing one run on three hits, and MLB.com reports his next outing could come as a starter.

Turner is a candidate to start in Edwin Jackson's spot in the rotation Tuesday, after Jackson was placed on the disabled list this week. Turner has not started since early August when the Cubs acquired him, but he told MLB.com he would be ready if called on.

"Definitely," he said. "I was starting at the beginning of the month. I don't think I'd have any problem going five, and depending on how stressful the innings were, getting back up and down wouldn't be a problem."

Turner has made 12 of his 22 appearances this season as a starter, carrying a 5.77 ERA in 82 2/3 innings overall.
