Red Sox acquire Leon from Nationals, place Vazquez on 60-day DL

(10:11 am ET) The Red Sox traded for Nationals catcher Sandy Leon on Monday. The Nationals received cash considerations in exchange for Leon.

To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox placed catcher Christian Vazquez (elbow) on the 60-day disabled list.

The 26-year-old Leon has appeared in just 34 games at the major-league level. He has a .236/.324/.329/.653 slash line over eight seasons in the minors.


Marlins release Reed Johnson, option Preston Claiborne to Triple-A

Rays' Cash changes course, plans to take closer-by-committee approach

(9:57 am ET) A day after indicating Brad Boxberger would be the team's closer while Jake McGee is sidelined with an elbow injury, Rays manager Kevin Cash said Monday he is not going to name a closer, per the Tampa Bay Times. Cash added they will use several relievers in save situations.

Cash added they will revisit the closer situation once McGee comes off the disabled list. McGee is expected to miss the first month of the season.


Rays SP Drew Smyly set for two rounds of live batting practice

(9:52 am ET) Rays starting pitcher Drew Smyly emerged from his bullpen session Sunday without any issues, so he is now scheduled to throw batting practice Wednesday and Saturday before he starts throwing in rehab games, per the Tampa Bay Times.

Manager Kevin Cash said Smyly's return to the rotation depends on whether the teams want to stretch him out to 75 or 105 pitches, per The Tampa Tribune. Smyly is targeting an April return.


Tigers reassign six players to minor-league camp

Report: MRI reveals soreness in Casey Janssen's shoulder

(9:28 am ET) Nationals reliever Casey Janssen told reporters Monday he is unsure of how long he will be sidelined due to a shoulder injury, he said the injury is "not a major concern" and called it spring training inflammation, per The Washington Post.

While the results of Janssen's MRI haven't been officially announced, a source told The Post the right-handed reliever is dealing with a sore right shoulder. He has been prescribed rest and treatment, but his status for the start of the season is up in the air.


Orioles' Arencibia receives injection, to be re-evaluated Wednesday

(9:23 am ET) Orioles catcher J.P. Arencibia received a cortisone injection in his right forearm, as he continues to be sidelined due to a flexor mass strain, per MLB.com. He is slated to be re-evaluated Wednesday.

While Arencibia took batting practice Sunday, he said he still didn't feel right while throwing, which is why he received the cortisone injection.


Orioles' J.J. Hardy headed for MRA, aiming to stay off DL

(9:17 am ET) Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy is scheduled to undergo an MRA (magnetic resonance angiogram) on his left shoulder Monday, per MLB.com.

An MRA is a type of MRI scan that uses a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to provide pictures of blood vessels inside the body, according to WebMD.com.

“I feel much better today than I did yesterday and I felt much better yesterday than I did the day before,” said Hardy, who suffered the injury while diving for a baseball in Friday’s spring game.

Hardy is optimistic his latest injury won't require a trip to the disabled list.

“At this point, the way I feel, the way that it improved over the last few days, yeah, I feel pretty good about it,” he said.
