D-Backs' Hale on Peter O'Brien: 'Another guy pushing the envelope'

(4:30 pm ET) Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale indicated Wednesday that prospect Peter O'Brien is getting closer to joining the major-league roster, per MLB Network Radio.

"He's catching and doing a nice job," Hale said. "He looks good back there. His at-bats have been great and he is another guy pushing the envelope."

O'Brien has a .346/.383/.660/1.043 slash line in 41 games with Triple-A Reno this season. He also has two triples, 11 home runs, 13 doubles and 45 RBI. 

O'Brien has moved all around the diamond this season. He has played 13 games in left field, 11 games in right field, nine games at catches, four at DH and three at first base.


Blue Jays INF Steve Tolleson has tweaked groin

(4:28 pm ET) Blue Jays infielder Steve Tolleson was unavailable for Wednesday's game due to a tweaked groin, according to ESPN.com. 

Tolleson was lifted in the sixth inning of Tuesday's game, though no injury was initially reported. The team has not provided an update on Tolleson's status for Friday's game in Minnesota.


Royals 3B Mike Moustakas blasts fifth home run of the season

(4:26 pm ET) Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas went 1 for 4 at the plate in Kansas City's 4-2 loss to the Yankees on Wednesday. Moustakas did his damage in the first inning when he belted a solo home run off of Michael Pineda, his fifth of the season.

Moustakas is now hitting .322 with 16 RBI in 170 at-bats this season.


Yankees catcher Brian McCann blasts sixth home run of the year

(4:24 pm ET) Yankees catcher Brian McCann went 1 for 2 at the plate in New York's 4-2 win over the Royals on Wednesday.

McCann did his damage in the second inning when he blasted a leadoff home run off of Chris Young, his sixth of the season. McCann, who also walked twice, is now hitting .239 with 29 RBI on the year.


Mets' Michael Cuddyer blasts two-run homer in win

(4:22 pm ET) Mets outfielder Michael Cuddyer blasted a two-run home run off Phillies' Sean O'Sullivan in his team's 7-0 win on Wednesday.

The long-ball to left field was Cuddyer's fifth home run of the season. Cuddyer now has 22 RBI in 164 at-bats this season.


Dodgers recall OF Chris Heisey, DFA reliever Sergio Santos

(4:21 pm ET) The Dodgers recalled outfielder Chris Heisey from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday. To clear a roster spot, reliever Sergio Santos was designated for assignment.

Heisey has appeared in just three games this season for Los Angeles, batting . 200 (1 for 5) with two strikeouts and five walks.

Santos, who was the White Sox's closer in 2011, posted a 4.73 ERA in 12 relief appearances for the Dodgers. He had 15 strikeouts and seven walks in 13 1/3 innings.


Yankees DH Alex Rodriguez moves to third on all-time RBI list

(4:21 pm ET) Yankees designated hitter Alex Rodriguez wetn 2 for 4 at the plate in New York's 4-2 win over the Royals on Wednesday.

Rodriguez did his damage in the third inning when he belted a three-run home run off of Chris Young over the right field wall, his 11th of the season. With the shot, Rodriguez surpassed Lou Gehrig with 1,995 RBI in his career, moving to third on the all-time list. He is now just one away from tying Barry Bonds for second.

Rodriguez is now hitting .276 with 26 RBI on the year.


White Sox 1B Jose Abreu finishes a homer shy of the cycle

(4:21 pm ET) Jose Abreu was the hero for the White Sox in their extra-inning victory over the Blue Jays on Wednesday. Abreu initially gave the team an early 2-0 lead with a two-run double in the third inning. 

Then, after the Blue Jays tied the game in the ninth, Abreu tripled and later scored in the 10th inning, helping to secure the 5-3 win. He finished a home run shy of the cycle, finishing with a three-hit performance. 

Though his 17-game hitting streak recently came to an end, Abreu hasn't stopped hitting. He has now hit safely in 20 of his last 22 games, lifting his average up to .284 on the year. 


Reds SP Mike Leake drops third straight start

(4:17 pm ET) Reds starting pitcher Mike Leake dropped a third straight start during a 6-4 loss Wednesday against the Rockies. The right-hander gave up six runs on nine hits and two walks, while striking out four in five innings.

Leake (2-4) struggled from the outset Wednesday. He issued two walks in the first inning before allowing a two-out, three-run homer to Nolan Arenado. He then allowed a two-run homer to Charlie Blackmon in the second inning.

Leake would throw two scoreless innings before allowing a two-out RBI single to Ben Paulsen in the fifth inning. 

Leake has allowed 20 runs on 27 hits and eight walks in 14 innings during his three-game losing streak. He is scheduled to be back on the hill Tuesday at Philadelphia.


Blue Jays 3B Josh Donaldson hits another ninth-inning home run

(4:17 pm ET) Josh Donaldson did it again. For the second straight game, the Blue Jays third baseman blasted a ninth-inning home run off White Sox closer David Robertson. This time, the solo home run tied the game at three, but the White Sox would come back to win in the 10th inning.

The home run, Donaldson's 13th of the season, was his only hit of the game. He now has eight hits over his last five games as his season average sits at .314.
