Brandon Kintzler on track to return Friday
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:49 pm ET) Brewers reliever Brandon Kintzler (neck) is slated to throw a bullpen session Monday, per MLB.com.

If all goes well, he will throw another bullpen session or simulated game Wednesday. Kintzler is on track to be activated off the disabled list Friday.

Wil Myers starting to heat up at the plate
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(3:48 pm ET) Rays outfielder Wil Myers is starting to heat up at the plate, according to MLB.com.

Myers went 6 for 9 Friday and Saturday, which has been a strong contrast to how he performed earlier in the year. "I'm not there yet, but it's a lot better," Myers said. Manager Joe Maddon agreed, saying Myers was more confident at the plate. "His confidence is being picked up, right now, because of those performances -- and you're seeing the ball going up and not rolling over," Maddon said.

Myers is hitting .262 in 61 at-bats.

Raul Ibanez will sit in NL parks
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(3:34 pm ET) Angels outfielder Raul Ibanez will likely sit when the team plays interleague games, according to MLB.com.

"It's an unfortunate thing about going to play a National League club, but it's what we'll do," manager Mike Scioscia said. Ibanez will see occasional spot starts in the outfield, but he'll mainly be relagated to pinch hit duty. Scioscia added that some time to rest might be a good thing for the struggling Ibanez.

Through 60 at-bats, Ibanez is hitting .150.

Cubs would like to see Jose Veras regain closer's role
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:33 pm ET) Cubs manager Rick Renteria said Sunday he would like to see Jose Veras return to the closer's role at some point, per MLB.com.

"Veras was brought in to be our closer," Renteria said. "We want to make sure he's given an opportunity. He's working very hard on certain things but he still has to get out there on the hill in game situations to get comfortable.

"We certainly want to make sure we give Jose a chance to get back into the role and try to find situations we can allow him to work. He needs to work. We're going to do our very best that he gets into a comfort level. We need all those guys. In baseball, you don't eliminate guys, you need them all."

Casey McGehee thriving at Marlins Park
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:28 pm ET) Marlins third baseman Casey McGehee is doing his best to take advantage of the spacious dimensions at Marlins Park.

The veteran third baseman entered play Sunday vs. Seattle batting .341 (15 for 44) with four doubles, one triple and 14 RBI in 12 home games, as opposed to hitting .217 (5 for 23) with one double and one RBI in six road games.

"There are a lot of places to get hits," McGehee said of hitting at home, per MLB.com. "Hitting the ball out of the ballpark is a little more of a challenge here than at some other places. But I feel like I'm strong enough that if I do catch one good, I will be able to drive it out of the ballpark. But I think if you go up with that as your sole goal it's going to make for a long year."

McGehee attributes his strong start to establishing a better approach after he learned to be patient seeing so many forkballs and offspeed pitches playing in Japan last season.

"I think more than anything it was just going and playing every day, and getting back into the mode of being able to have an approach at the plate, and not be so result-oriented all the time, which is easier said than done," McGehee said.

Carlos Santana trying to work through slump
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(3:28 pm ET) Indians third baseman Carlos Santana is trying to work through a slump, according to MLB.com.

Santana is hitting just .153 through 59 at-bats, and hitting coach Ty Van Burkleo believes he's trying to do too much at the plate. "It just seems like he's trying to do too much," Van Burkleo said. "He went into that spell where he wasn't getting hits, and those 0-fers kind of pile up, and it kind of manifests."

Van Burkleo added that he is trying to get Santana to focus on one at-bat at a time. He praised Santana for his .333 on-base percentage, saying Santana finds a way to contribute even when he's not hitting well.

Cardinals promote Zach Petrick to Triple-A
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:22 pm ET) Cardinals starting pitcher prospect Zach Petrick was promoted to Triple-A Memphis Sunday following the announcment Tyler Lyons will join the St. Louis rotation.

Petrick, who was the team's minor-league pitcher of the year in 2013, was 2-0 with a 0.48 ERA and 0.75 WHIP in three starts for Double-A Springfield.

Joe Kelly 'responding better than anticipated' to treatment
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:18 pm ET) Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said Sunday starting pitcher Joe Kelly is "responding better than anticipated" as he gets treatment for a left hamstring strain, per MLB.com. Kelly has begun to play catch.

Scott Hairston 'right on schedule' in recovery
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:12 pm ET) Nationals outfielder Scott Hairston (oblique) has been taking swings in the batting cage and hopes to begin a minor-league rehab assignment soon, per MLB.com. Hairston, who is swinging at 75 percent intensity, said he's "right on schedule" in his recovery.

"I'm just setting really small goals right now," Hairston said. "We'll complete steps one and two before we see the finish line."

Darin Mastroianni designated for assignment Sunday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(3:06 pm ET) The Twins have designated outfielder Darin Mastroianni for assignment Sunday.

Mastroianni was shipped out in favor of Sam Fuld, who the team claimed on waivers. Mastroianni was hitless in 11 at-bats this season.
